robert Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 After having ridden the lifts all of my life I am going to give Randonee a try this Sunday. Anyone have any suggestions of a good place where my buddy and I can cut our teeth? The NWAC says we should stay home, but the gear is rented and we are going. Thanks for the help. Quote
iain Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 was that printed directly out of an intro avalanche text? Quote
robert Posted March 7, 2003 Author Posted March 7, 2003 What I meant was that we are going if it means that we have to buy a lift ticket and ski at Stevens then we will. We are going skiing, not looking for an avalanche. Quote
AlpineK Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 I would look for some tree skiing east of the crest. Â Be carefull! Avy conditions could fuck you up this weekend. Quote
Rodchester Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 This weekend? Â Stick to the lifts and stay alive...I'll be in the bar, on a stool, with a beer. Quote
cracked Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 Danger increasing significantly Saturday and becoming high to extreme above 3 to 4000 feet and high below late Saturday into early Sunday. Â BE CAREFUL EVERYONE!!!!!!! Quote
pete_a Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 (edited) If you must hit the backcountry this weekend, sticking to low-angle tree skiing that has low objective hazard from steep terrain above you is going to be the safest option, besides staying home. Good tree skiing can be found on Mazama Ridge near Paradise and there are some good glades on Skyline Ridge across from Stevens ski area. That being said this weekend is not a good weekend to head out into the bc if you don't have an experienced crew to go with. Hopefully no one will get dead this weekend. Â ...Guess I spoke too soon "A guy just died at Crystal after he fell into a tree well and suffocated. Sad, and condolences." Â damn thats awful. Edited March 7, 2003 by pete_a Quote
To_The_Top Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 Even the lifts and trees are not entirely safe. The snow hasnt consolidated around trees. A guy just died at Crystal after he fell into a tree well and suffocated. Sad, and condolences. Quote
Dave_Schuldt Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 (edited) The back side of MT Catherine and tour over Nordic Pass also ski up from Windy Pass towrds Silver Peak. Park at Hyak, you don't have to pay to ski up to Windy Pass. There is also good touring at Blewit Pass. There is a no snowmo area. Edited March 8, 2003 by Dave_Schuldt Quote
philfort Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 I was out (bc) today near the pass, and while the snow was phenomenal deep fluffy powder, avie conditions were some of the sketchiest I've been out in. Probably a good weekend to stick to resorts. We tried to ski low angle treed stuff, but it's so tempting to start skiing steeper open stuff - maybe go somewhere where you don't have that option (someone suggested Mt Catherine? I've heard it has decent old growth glades). We saw one good-size natural slab that had released, with debris running into dense forest. Also had a 25 degree gladed slope crack and settle under us. Luckily the snow was so light than face shots were possible even on low angle stuff. Quote
robert Posted March 10, 2003 Author Posted March 10, 2003 Went out, had a great time, didn't die in an avalanche. All in all a good trip. We went to Stevens as the avalanche reports were just to bad. Thanks for all of the great suggestions. Quote
