mattp Posted January 31, 2003 Author Posted January 31, 2003 As ChucK notes, two of mine are still unidentified. I'm not ready to give up on you folks yet, but I'll give some fairly generous hints. The first: Big hint: an almost identical shot appears in Baldwin's "Exploring the Coast Range on Skis." The rock on which I sat to shoot the shot is granite or something similar, with about a 300 yard class IV scramble to a fine summit. The second one: Big hint: the rock is, I believe, part of the Mount Stuart batholith. Quote
proper Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 mattp: is the second photo Little Annapurna? Quote
philfort Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 Is the first one Mt Shuksan, Sulfide glacier? hmm... if it's something in the Coast Mtns, that's not fair, that could be anywhere! there's nothing really distinctive in the shot. Quote
mattp Posted January 31, 2003 Author Posted January 31, 2003 philfort- True, there are a lot of mountains in the Coast Range that look something like that. But I figure somebody has a reasonable chance of identifying it because of the Baldwin link. I would venture a guess that Dru has stood at the exact same spot that I shot from, and maybe one or two others who post on this board. Quote
mattp Posted January 31, 2003 Author Posted January 31, 2003 Lots of you have stood where this photo was taken and the peak shown in the photo has been discussed on this board. Quote
mattp Posted January 31, 2003 Author Posted January 31, 2003 Nope. Many many miles from Black Peak, in fact. Quote

Ok, how about another hint: is the peak in "southern BC", i.e. south of Lillooet/Pemberton (including duffy lake road area). Or is it futher up north "exotic" like up the lillooet river/hurley river/central coast range. Quote
mattp Posted January 31, 2003 Author Posted January 31, 2003 By your definition, "exotic." But it is almost certainly climbed several times a year and would not be termed "exotic" by a Coast Mountains officianado. Quote
jordop Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 Matt, your first photo could be anywhere between Pemberton and Bella Coola, but I will just guess somewhere on the Monarch. For those who remember or care, Dru #2 is the W face of Silver Peak I'm guessing Quote
mattp Posted January 31, 2003 Author Posted January 31, 2003 Jordop - The peak is much closer to Pemberton than Bella Coola. In addition to the class IV scramble, it has at least one eight to ten pitch rock route, 5.10 or so, on good rock. Quote
jordop Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 Sirenia?? Wahoo is more than ten pitches . . . SE butt of Queen Bess is more as well Quote
bobinc Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 Since no one is guessing on the second (newer) photo, I'll keep flailing: Mt Thompson? Quote

Cant you see the granite? Silver is mostly metaconglomerate. Nobody got the butt shot yet either> i bet a lot of people have rappeled down it anyways. [HINT] Quote
philfort Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 I'll venture two more guesses before giving up Mt Overseer? (I think there is a hut nearby, which makes it more likely someone would be skiing there maybe?) or somewhere near Mt Athelstan? Quote
Dru Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 Jordan is your "Not Bella Coola" picture, by Clowhom Lake by any chance... was the arete one McDonald S by the way? You never said yes or no. Quote

mattp Posted January 31, 2003 Author Posted January 31, 2003 Dru - You got it: Mt. Thiassi. Maybe you haven't bothered with it because it is too easy?? The mystery picture was shot a couple hundred yards uphill from here: Quote
mattp Posted January 31, 2003 Author Posted January 31, 2003 Dru - I'm having trouble going back and locating pictures that remain "unidentified" for a second look. Where in this thread is the "butt shot" posted? Quote
philfort Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 Wow, that looks like a nice place to be. Quote
Dru Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 Here is the butt shot again Matt Thiassi is on my list of things to do, but requires at least a 3 day trip to climb the route I want to climb (probably) and best approach is from McParlon which is a long way to drive from the Wack at present. Quote
mattp Posted January 31, 2003 Author Posted January 31, 2003 (edited) Philfort: Wanna go? I might be interested in a return visit this Spring. There is a lot of good skiing up there. Dru: Do you know if RR Pass (Hurley River Road) is open this winter? Edited January 31, 2003 by mattp Quote
jordop Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 Jordan is your "Not Bella Coola" picture, by Clowhom Lake by any chance... was the arete one McDonald S by the way? You never said yes or no. No, not by Clowhom, closer to you than that. You've stood atop it. The aretes will be a hard guess. They aren't a real peak but a subsidiary, poorly mapped too. In your backyard. The third, snowy one should be easy for you. Not the East Lion. Think "crap" as per the clue. Quote
erik Posted January 31, 2003 Posted January 31, 2003 DRU is that overexposure or one of those routes???? Quote
