Please help, I've broken my heel bone!
layton replied to Jens's topic in Fitness and Nutrition Forum
I shattered all of my metatarsals on both feet, and required surgery immediately (ok 2 weeks later after the swelling went down). Jens hasn't provided enough info on what type of fracture and where the fracture was for any good reccomendations. The x-ray doc should have given him a follow up which...he should follow. -
Yeah, that was my 2nd time up and I enojoyed getting the alternate pitches. Fun and qual. Thanks Scott Johnson and Larry Goldie for the hard work!

He said heel bone, not ankle bone. -
Dru, I'd like to settle for what I can get for my apt before I can settle for what I can get in the chica dept. I might even get an upgrade if I don't have a baren apartment.

Hey Jen's relax, you'll be fine...in 6-8 weeks. A fracture is a fracture as far as healing time goes-from a hairline to a complete break. 6-8 weeks. There's almost nothing anyone can do to help speed up the recovery if the bone doesn't need to be re-set. Luckily, it's not a very movable joint, so it should be very stable. You will need to completely stay off of it for that 6-8 weeks and have it casted. You could do that yourself if the bones are in good approximation. You probably don't need to see an orthopedist, the x-ray should be clear enough. If it is splintered or offset, then yeah, get surgery quick since that will be the day One of your 6-8 weeks, To help speed it up, take lots of calcium, Vit D, and vitamin C. Weight bearing includes any part of your foot since your toes would full on your calf, and act as a fulcum on your calcaneus (heel bone). Eat lots of food and stay as active as possible. After the 6-8 weeks there will be residual pain and scar tissue that will make it hard to walk and climb. Microtrauma to the soft tissues around the fracture, and upstream and down will make your calf and ankle stiff and sore for a while. The trick is to just push yourself to the limit of pain...then back off. You should be climbing by august. You'll probably be walking differently after the bone heals, so you'll want to make sure you're gait isn't affected badly. Oh, and there should be no concerns about a loss of sensitivity over your heel. Good luck and give me a call if you have any questions. I will help you rehab at my clinic then if you'd like. -
Don't spill any Mickey's on your frat hat or docker's cj001f when you type. Have fun with your fantasy pin-up girls...they must really dig ya.

Hey, anyone got any furniture they want to depart with? I need some stuff for the new apt and figured you guys might have some unwanted clutter. If it's nice, I'll be willing to pay. I don't want to go through craigslist since I have to find a vehicle to pick it up and don't want to deal with logistics like that. Here's my shopping list. I'd be broke if I got it all new Bed frame +/or mattress (full or queen) Pillow Small couch or loveseat Small coffee table Small dining table + 2 chairs Small/medium flat desk DVD Player Pots/Pans/Frypans Baking Sheet Sharp Knives/Steak Knifes Mixing Bowels Cutting board Cullender (sp?) Vegie Steamer Wooden Spoons Tupperware Measuring Cups/Spoons Can opener Misc household stuff (like soap,sponges,etc...) Thanks, and email me directly michael _ layton at h o t m a i l if you've got something you want to sell or just get rid of.

Hey I've got spotty internet for a couple weeks, but Catbird's post are pretty reactionary and not really based on realistic situations. Don't listen to him, he's not any sort of expert. Everything depends on the situation. Yes, if you have plantar facisitis and a calcaneus fracture, you probably should be going barefoot. You also probably shouldn't be running. And if you were a caveman/woman...you'd have been eaten by now with your lame feet. Seriously, apply real life scenarios and think of practical solutions before you give out advice. Muffy, I haven't completely read your foot case, and I think it would take more than what you've written. Go with your doctor's advice for now. Is he a podiatrist? If not, then go see one of those and tell him you must be active.

Thanks Bill. I just got my car broken into in front of my house last night....so I am now tipping towards my original feelings towards this town. Although I'm sure I'll get broken into every other night in seattle. Hey! NEW CLIMBING GEAR!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Renter's Insurance

I'm sad to leave, but I appreciate all the folks I've met here. I wasn't too keen on this town for the 1st couple years, but now it's grown on me and I'll miss it! Hopefully I'll make it down to Smith occasionally and see some familiar faces once again. Or, come say hi up north in Seattle or the hills. Of course I'll still be spraying full time. I'll post some info about where I'll be working for those of you in dire need of chiropractic care and want someone who actually knows what climbers need...mainly: to keep climbing. So if you're injured, suck it up for like a month until I can see you. Thanks Portland!
