    Tele or Randonee???

pretty much what sayjay said. alpine touring is probably more efficient when used as an adjunct to climbing. also, AT gear is not heavier than tele gear, despite what some people will tell you. actually i just wanted to test my new autosig.

    FUCK YOU KEN SCHRAM!!!

there are a couple reasons why a bike will deliberately take up a lane: to prevent a car making a right turn in front of the bike and potentially cutting him off (a lot of motorists underestimate a bikes speed - it's really dangerous if you are on a bike), or if there isn't enough room (like cars parked and opening doors etc.), or the guy might just be an asshole. legal? actually i think so. nice? no. does it keep you alive? yes. ken schram aside i actually do obey the traffic laws, most of the time anyway. i still think it's usually the motorists who are creating the unsafe situations. and what's a fender bender for a car is broken bones or worse for a cyclist. anyway, a biker learns to do what he needs to. i could spew here all day long about how we can share the road but i'd still need to ride just as defensively. a lot of motorists just don't see bikers, or maybe they just realize they're not going to get seriously injured by one.

    FUCK YOU KEN SCHRAM!!!

re: bicycling dear dickhead, as a bicyclist who rides to work year round rain or shine i can honestly tell you that if i obeyed all the traffic laws i'd be dead in two weeks. you learn pretty how to get where you're going and stay alive at the same time. it gives me great pleasure to delay your fat motor driven ass. oh yeah somebody named jon sent me. up yours, greg mueller
  8. i'm curious, why did you descend the sulfide? why not just descend the white salmon? did you park a second car? where did you start out?
  9. that was probably us you saw topping out. we had hiked in saturday and camped at the base of the climb. we were moving the next morning at 4:10 and by the time we topped out it was getting somewhat slushy. if you try again go left around the pyramid (unless the ridge is snow free and climbable). we went right and lost a lot of elevation we had to regain. i guess you already know about the approach here's some pictures if you're interested.

Greg, you're totaly right. Although tieing into the anchor with four feet of rope is esentialy static as well...would you agree? according to the putzl article, you get enough stretch in four feet of rope to handle a low velocity fall, and enough stretch in 30 feet of rope to handle a high velocity fall, so it turns into a similar impact on your harness. i can't find the original article i read (it was a photocopy) but if you go to their web page they have somethin similar.
  14. not sure if this has been brought up, but the weakness of daisies is not the tensil strength but the fact that they are not dynamic and consequently exert a huge force on the anchor or your body. if you are clipped to an anchor at or feet and take a fall you end up taking a factor 2 fall and the resulting stresses on the system. (at least this is what i think i read by something by petzl). you also never want to clip two loops because the you are only on the stitching between the loops. if you clip one loop you are on a bar tacked runner. that said my vote is: i always tie off on a clove. but i keep a daisy ready on my harness for 1) setting up rapels sometimes and 2) unfucking the rope and 3) reserve tank runner / anchor material.
  15. can you give me tips on hocking huge green lugers? i need some ammo.
  16. 8 miles round trip on the burke so yes i am a pussy, but i do it every freaking day of the year. i helped staff the bike-to-work-day station at blakely and 25th. it was a mob scene from before 6 am to when i left at 8. i had the counter and we'd seen 270 people during that time. i talked to a couple guys who do some serious rides to bellevue and such all year. judging by the number of bikes with fenders i think a lot of these people bike to work on a reasonably regular basis. bikin to work. i like it.
