yeah, there are a shitload of boulders and blocks around steamboat. hey rat, know of any good problems or areas in particular at banks? i'm gonna head over from Cd'A the first good saturday we get. thanks,
-
there's good bouldering here in coeur d'alene, post falls, and some new stuff north a bit. the selkirk crest north of sandpoint looks promising too. other than that, the next area of huge potential would be pipestone pass, just south of butte, MT. we're talking thousands of beautiful granite boulders. peace.

banks lake is on the east side, about 110 miles west of spokane, and right adjacent to grand coulee dam. it's vastly undeveloped and chock full of granite. there are some other areas north of leavenworth, on the east side of the crest, but i don't know any specifics. cheers,
-
you've got it - the leavenworth area has a shitload of bouldering. it's probably "the destination" in WA state. other bouldering areas include: banks lake - tons of potential. sagebrush steppe climate. climbable, yet cold, in the winter. granite. minehaha - spokane's bouldering area. granite problems. right near town. other than that, there's rock all over WA state. just keep yer eyes peeled and you'll likely find some good quality stuff that doesn't get much mileage. cheers,

i agree with the votes for the greater methow valley and bend. two pretty good places to live and play. i've said it before - north idaho is pretty nice as far as i'm concerned. coeur d'alene is 35,000 people, but still a smallish resort town on a large, beautiful lake. we have bouldering in town, sport climbing about 6 minutes away, quality alpine multipitch trad an hour or so away, and within 1.5 hours there are hundreds of sport/trad routes and dozens of quality crags. the closest ski resort is 30 miles on the freeway and there are 5 ski hills within an hour and a half. on top of it all, there's great mountain biking right out of town, national forest surrounding the town to the east, south and north and quality boating/kayaking in the vicinity. leavenworth is only 3 hours away, climbing in canada and glacier national park is about 3 hours away. the weather is pretty decent. cold and snow is frequent in the winter, but still climbable most the time, and summers are generally mid 80's, dry and sunny.

its probably your browser's font size. in the IE toolbar, go to VIEW, then TEXT SIZE and choose a different size. this might be the problem. cheers.

There are a lot of climbs under .10a at the Black Cliffs. Unfortunately, although I grew up in the Boise area, I didn't climb there all that much. I remember one 5.8 called Coupe De Ville that was good. Another one called Stems and Seeds was 5.7 and fun. Both are at the Short Cliffs - the first climbing when coming up from Boise. Other than that, I really can't remember much. I think the guide book may have a star **** system, but I don't have it here on me, so I'm not certain. If you're looking for a quick fix, or like bouldering, I'd recommend a session at Table Rock. That place has a lot of good boulders and blocks. I also forgot, there's some climbing up Rocky Canyon in the foothills. It's covered in the guide book, although there's not much. There are also boulders scattered all over the foothills in general. Sorry I couldn't elaborate any more on specific routes!

I think you're refering to the Black Cliffs on Hwy 21 near Lucky Peak on the way to Idaho City, not McCall. There's only 1 local guide book called Boise Climbs. Not a whole lot of info here, but its the site for the guide: http://www.boiseclimbs.com/ There are a shitload of trad and sport climbs, pretty much all 1 pitch, up to .13d or .14a. Fairly similar to Vantage in a lot of regards. Another good place to climb is up at Table Rock (the butte with the cross above town). There are sport, gear, mixed and top rope routes and some great bouldering on quarried sandstone. Between Table Rock and Hwy 21, above the river is a place called Valley of the Trolls, with good bouldering and a fair amount of potential. You have to cross some private land, so be stealth. There's some information at that boise climbs site. At Swan Falls, on the Snake River, out of Boise is a bunch of bouldering. Same goes for the Birds of Prey area outside of Melba. The area is called Halverson Lake and there are a ton of basalt boulders. Up near Bogus Basin ski area, there are some trad and sport climbs on Mores Mountain, but the area's under 6 feet of snow right now. Have fun. Lots of rock in the area. If you want more specifics, just email me. [ 12-28-2001: Message edited by: offwidthclimber ]

no wicked view for me, but i'll be thinking of you all when i'm chowing 3 feet of feather light idaho freshiez wednesday. silver mt. hasn't been open since saturday due to wind, so wednesday is going to be an epic day with a 100+ inch base! whoohoo!!!
-
it's not the cascades, but when i was growing up in southern idaho, our cat population was directly proportional to how hungry the local coyote population was. practically had to chase the bastards out of our yard sometimes. seen a few since i've moved to north idaho, but not nearly as many as in southern idaho.

whoohoo! i think a trip to schweitzer is in order sunday. 16 inches in the last 24 hours and an 86" base. it's currently 18 degrees and dumping, so it's gonna be fluffy and bone dry!!

m, i'll be sure to post a pic or two after i get the wall up and climbable. can't wait to get started. cheers,

whoohoo! tonight, me and a couple of my frosty friends are going to put up the first 2 panels of my home wall. the stairway for the bonus room my wife and i had added to the floor plan left a perfect 12 foot, 50 degree overhang in the garage, plus ample room in a recessed area for more overhangs and vertical sections. i'm starting with about 60 square feet, but will hopefully end up with about 450 square feet when all is said and done. no more climbing-deprived weeks when it's snowy and cold. and no paying $13 a pop and driving 35 minutes each way for the gym in spokane

Is the outdoor gear giving way to travel clothes, book bags and yuppy holiday knicknacks? dude, they've been there for a while! in all honesty, i guess i don't really care much, since i don't expect much, but while living downtown, i pretty much gave up on the flagship "megastore." i don't know how many times i went there for something and they were either out of stock, out of my size, or out of all acceptable colors. this goes for everything from climbing shoes and clothing to fuel canisters for backpacking stoves. you'd think the flagship store could at least keep enough stock in hand to compliment the "impressive" aesthetics. moral of the story. i started going to REI only if feathered friends didn't have what i needed. sheesh. so there i was, lashed by rain, inching my way across a steep face. i looked to the cold grey sky for a sign of reprieve, but the rain continued and the rock streamed water, soaking me to the bone. i pressed on, matching hands on a slippery slide pull and with some great finesse, moving up and right to a small horn-like feature. from here, i barely reached the left edge of the fist crack. i smeared down and plugged in two good jams, and then freed my right to reach a solid edge and the safety of the corner system... wow, i thought, stepping into the pea gravel , that's 3 times in a row. the rain mustfinally be washing off all that greasy chalk. no epics here, just 2 hours of totally fun, rain soaked bouldering at the UW rock Thursday morning, while in town visiting inlaws. The few people driving through the parking lot looked at me like i was crazy. who ever thought climbing in the rain and getting soaked to the bone could be so fun! greasy jamming, tricky traverses and slipper dynos aside from that it was lots of eating and

went bouldering on sunday. blue skies, lots of sun, dry granite and a big beautiful lake to look at oh, and a couple new problems and i finished a mantle problems i've been trying on and off for a while now. feel like i've been run over by a truck this morning. cheers.

Matt, I live in Coeur d'Alene and would meet up with ya for some climbing, but i'll be in Seattle with my wife & inlaws for t-day. if you want some detailed info on local bouldering, drop me an email: offwidthclimber@hotmail.com There's bouldering at Minnehaha, just east of Spokane and we're in the midst of "developing" Tubbs Hill on Lake Coeur d'Alene in Cd'A. Lots of bouldering and this is a good time of the year, as some of the great beach-side bouldering is coming back in with the dropping lake levels. Cheers,

went to a place called laclede near sandpoint, id last week and was pleased to onsight a devious old school 10c face climb, despite not having tied into a rope but once in the last 10 months. that made my weekend. this weekend, i flashed this tricky V3 boulder problem i've tried once or twice. was pretty happy about that too. huge deadpoint to a funky sloper, followed by some high stepping trickery. unfortunately for me, no mountain adventures this last summer, just beer , bouldering and beaches!

Nice page and excellent trip reports. I'll be bookmarking and checking back later! cheers

exactly. take the story for what it's worth. bottom line - it was a lot of fucking hiking, committment and isolation. has anyone here even hiked ONE of the the THREE trails in a year?
