  1. But how was the music?
  2. I've descended Gib Ledges in winter. Twice. It was really no big deal. The exit gulley was not particularly steep as I recall. It was cold when we returned so we did not experience any rockfall.
  3. I just calculated mine. I am 'overweight' (25.4). I guess running 50 miles a week, lifting weights and climbing and skiing on the weekends is just not doing it. I hope I don't drop dead of a heart attack.
  4. Once your friend tries the appoach (and deproach) to Colchuck Lake on skis he may see the value in snow shoes.
  5. jja: I did the Early Winters Couloir as a winter mixed route. This is the east facing gulley between the North and South Early Winter Spires. We descended the decent route by plunge stepping. The decent route would not be much of a challenge as a climb.

    Too Smart to Teach?

Since this guy is so smart, he should get himself a job working at the social studies factory. That's what his degree is in, isn't it? Just from looking at his photo I would assume he came off as an arrogant jackass. Who wants to hire an arrogant jackass. Anyone who states membership into Mensa as being a qualification clearly has not done anything worthwhile to speak of.
  7. Nice trip report. I wonder when Triple Couloirs will be skied, assuming it has not already been skiied.

    etiquette question

Funny. One of the hardest climbers I ever met is a guy named Dave Moroles. His clothes are held together by copious amounts of duct tape, and I don't think he owns anything brand name.

  10. Get a 20 degree, Primaloft or Polarguard Delta bag.
  11. My wife and I went XC skiing for the first time last week. We skiied up the Denny Creek road to Snoqualmie Pass and back. Can someone suggest another tour of similar difficulty (lack of steepness) near Snoqualmie Pass, preferably one that does not require a sno-park pass? Thanks.

    Harvard Route topo

W from this board has climbed it, he may have some insight. Also it is covered in 50 Classic Climbs In North America. Check this Web site out:http://www.naclassics.com/climbs/huntingt/beta.htm

    Cat Attacks

A local climber and trail runner was relating the story of how he was stalked and confronted by a cougar while running on Tiger Mt. From then on I was worried I would be attacked by a tiger while running on Cougar Mt.
  14. White Salmon Glacier would be the shortest approach in Winter and is noted for its good skiing.
  15. I loved Western. It has a better academic reputation than Central. I thought the quality of teachers at Western was far superior to the UW. The climbing was great, at least alpine climbing. Squamish was close enough to go to on the week ends and there was good bouldering for after school in town. I like Chuckanut sandstone.

    long underwear

I agree with cj001f that Montbell makes great underwear. It is still availble though, Montbell has a flagship store in Boulder.
  17. I am still using the last web-o-lette you lost on Vesper.

    Banff TR

Yeah, and don't forget about Franklin Falls!
  19. Lithium are reportedly not available as AAA. I use my Petzel Micro with litum AAs in winter rather than my Tikka for that reaon.
  20. We accessed the falls by taking the Denny Creek/Asahel Curtis exit and following it towards the Denny Creek Campground. The road is plowed only to a bridge from where it is neccessary to hoof it. It was about two miles to the falls from that point. If the road was plowed and open all the way it might be a 10 minute approach but count on more like 30 minutes or more on skis in the current conditions. If the main falls ever come in it would be a very cool climb.
  21. I have used a variety of shell fabrics including Gore-Tex, Triple Point Ceramic, Cloudburst and Pre-Cip. My experience with these are that they function the same in terms of waterproof/breathability. My Precip jacket has been reasonbly durable, but I think the fabric is too delicate to use in pants for skiing/mountaineering /ice climbing. A partner shredded his quickly. Consider a pair of stretch woven pants such as Schoeller. I have found these to be very functional and durable. Some of the more weather resistant varieties (Schoeller Dryskin Extreme for example) are great for winter climbing or skiing.
  22. I plan to loose 10 pounds and be nicer to everyone I meet.
  23. Hmmm, the article does not say what Journal the research was published in nor does it give any idea of the 'statistical' tests used. Any time a round number like 100 times is bandied about, my bullshit meter goes off. I am very skeptical as to the validity of the study. And once again children, correlation does not equal causation.
  24. Does anyone know if Banks Lake area climbs are formed?
  25. So that is all well and good, but I still don't understand how they intend to prevent uphill traffic, even on the south side of the valley, at 4:00 or 5:00 in the am when many climbers head off. Sounds like this will more effectively prevent snowshoers, and parents with kids from accessing the trail.
