  1. Please PM if this is not an appropriate question in this thread. Just curious about this New Paltz crag?? Thanks. Grew up in Woodstock & Pok.

    Merry Chritmas

Breaks my heart to see this. My bro is going through something like this now. Best wishes to the kids and you.
  3. One other battery note. This has a 'Built-in' rechargeable li-ion battery which will eventually die after a certain number of recharges. By then, you might not care. However, Garmin is currently charging $79/$89 + shipping to replace the 405/410 watch after the 1 year warranty expires. If you buy it, ask a geek friend how to prolong the Li-Ion battery life. I was given the 405 as a gift about 2 1/2 years ago (for running/pace, never for the mountains) and the battery now seems to be dying. When this 'Non-User-Replaceable' battery completely dies, I'll try the unsupported route which supposedly requires a little soldering
  4. Nice trip report. Thanks. When we were kids, my dad used to take us to Howe Caverns in New York. Later, while living in Pittsburg, a boy took me spelunking somewhere near the WV border. Since then, I have only walked through Ape Caves. I found a book "Caves of Washington" from 1963 by a Dr.Halliday in the library. Of course the librarian always gives me a very weird look whenever I borrow the book. I'm probably the only person to check it out (multiple times ) since the last pre-computerized stamp from 1998 on the check-out card. According to the book, Dynamite was discovered in 1958 and quickly vandalized. They blew up the entrance with Dynamite. Did you see any bats? What does one have to do to ensure their safety. I recall seeing something on OPB about humans spreading diseases which kill bats. I don't think the emergengy kit will work in this case.
  5. The Rocky Point gate is on the right, just a little over 1 mile from the bottom, off of Hwy 30. There are many dark and weird trails back there to keep you busy. We managed to get lost one time (on mountain bikes). Continue up Rocky Point to Skyline for a 1400 ft climb to Dixie Mnt (all paved road). Also, there is elevation gain and logging trails on Cater Road but not sure if hunters are back there.
  6. WTB: Women's AT boots, W7 ~24-24.5M Going to strike out but thought I'd ask: - Dynafit compatible - Portland area only - Less than $200 My current boots fit well - 24.5 Garmont (tele boots though). Thanks.

  8. His passing brought back memories of my family's first computer. For better or worse, that Apple (perhaps a ][e or III) symbolized so much for my immigrant parents. It was no surprise when they forced me to attend computer camp. 0 REM NO CLUE IF THIS WOULD REALLY WORK 10 PRINT " ******************************* " 20 PRINT " ** THANKS STEVE ** " 30 PRINT " ******************************* " 40 PRINT " ^\_ " 50 PRINT " o_/^ \ " 60 PRINT " /_^ \_ " 70 PRINT " \/^ \ " 80 PRINT " / ^ `\ " 90 PRINT " ^ \ " 100 PRINT " ****************************** " 110 IF SUCCESS = TRUE THEN 120 PRINT " \o/ " 130 PRINT " | " 140 PRINT " / \ " 150 PRINT " ^\_ " 160 PRINT " /^ \ " 170 PRINT " ^ \_ " 180 PRINT " /^ \ " 190 PRINT " / ^ `\ " 200 PRINT " ^ \ " 210 ELSE 220 FOR i = 1 to 3 230 PRINT " \ / " 240 PRINT " | " 250 PRINT " /o\ " 260 NEXT i 270 END IF 280 REM Climber from http://www.ascii-art.de/ > RUN
  9. The workshop would certainly be worth the commute to Seattle. Your Oregon coast photos are beautiful though the Good & Plenty's might be my favorite I pedaled mostly the same route in 2008, crossing the border to the Praire Creek Redwoods. Coasting the last ~10 miles downhill through those trees was a special way to end it.
  10. I stumbled across your website a few years ago and became a HUGE fan. Any chance you'd consider eventually coming down to Portland for your night photography workshop? Congrats on your bike adventure. I am looking forward to reading about it later when I am not at work...if I start looking at the photos now, I will get distracted for hours.
  11. I am envious. Is this avalanche canyon on the top left, the finger traverse on the top right, summit on the bottom right? Is the terrible traverse easier with less snow? Thanks.
  12. Hey Scappoose sister...Sending you a PM. Maybe you can also provide input on hiking Superstition Mountain in AZ (Thanksgiving timeframe).
  13. How about crewing on a sailboat in Seattle during the winter months? It won't cost anything as long as you have non-marking shoes (tevas or keens) and biking gloves. Use climbing clothes for cold rainy outings. Here is a website to help you going: http://www.cycseattle.org/sail-with-us/crewfinder/ It surprises me how few are willing to go up a mast so mention your climbing skills and willingness to go up one. I have tied many prussik around a mast...they like to send the lightest one up.
  14. I went up Avalanche Gulch yesterday. This site has the most accurate info & the ranger on the phone was extremely helpful: http://www.shastaavalanche.org/advisories/advisories/climbing-advisory While we were on the mountain on Tuesday, approximately 20 people summited via the AG route. Most camped at Lake Helen. We stayed at the Horse Camp with its fresh water & cozy toilets We went right of the Heart and up/down the left chute in the Red Banks. It was uneventful. Misery Hill was mostly snow free except for the top part. We used crampons above Lake Helen and took them off after the Red Banks. My friends glissaded down below the Red Banks. I worked on my boot skiing in the glissade tracks. I don't think it is worth carrying up skis now though I'd love to try one day with more snow. At night, in the tent, I heard some rock fall perhaps near Casaval Ridge. One group reported seeing rock fall but not on our climbing route. For me, the best part was enjoying the summit alone for awhile.
  15. Going to try Copper Mountain sometime in the next week. Any updates since this 2005 posting? I thought it would just be a hike so looking forward to the last little scramble.
  16. Why not move the wedding to the top of unicorn? Breathtaking views and room for several special guests I did not use crampons but was happy to have them on my pack. I stayed on snow as much as possible and made good toeholds on the 1st gully while my friend went over to the right rocks. The first 30+ feet is melted out significantly underneath in the middle and to the right. It was my first time leading a trad pitch - fortunately it's a very easy climb on the east side. The 2nd rap station on top might be new? I don't recall seeing it last October but I was following at the time (up the south side) and probably not paying attention. I did use the one closer to the east side. Enjoy!
  17. Here are photos from Monday 8/15 from Unicorn. I personally would not ski down the first gully above snow lake because of the melt but down the saddle might be fun. I did ski down from Muir yesterday (wanted to try climbing in my tele boots). Looking up at saddle Bench and Snow Lake from summit
  18. Anyone going up this route in the next 2 weeks? If so, please post an update. I hope to climb Aug 4 or Aug 5. I am interested in conditions from the large meadow basin to the climbers memorial. I climbed it the same foggy day as Fairweather a few weeks. Also climbed it last summer without snow and the huge moat. So, now I am not sure what to expect with conditions in between. Wondering if the huge moat will be there or if I can and should stick to the summer rocks by then. Thanks.

Unicorn Peak has great views though you'd skip the last pitch if alone.
