I'm penalized if I don't have kids. Some people are penalized if they don't get married. We reward people for buying houses, and allow them to deduct interest paid on the loan (VERY unusual, actually. Most countries don't allow that.) So, I don't see this as that big of a deal. It's not really a penalty for not getting insurance. It's an excise tax that you have to pay, which is waived if you have insurance. I'm not a legal scholar, but I doubt the individual mandate will be shot down at the SCOTUS level. Incidentally, I would feel much more comfortable if insurance companies were not allowed to be for-profit. But I've been saying that for year.

it's not a fine, it's a tax -- a tax for everybody over a certain income level, to help pay for healthcare for everyone else. Sure, they wave the tax if you already have health insurance, or if you're poor. That's nice of them. But it's just a tax. Of course you go to jail if you refuse to pay taxes. Duh. Nobody is sending you to jail because you opt not to get insurance. If you don't want insurance, don't get it. You might have to pay a tax though. You've got to pay your way, one way or another. This isn't rocket science.

Actually, you got that a bit wrong. It was Hitler's book that was actually used by Stalin to establish Communist rule in Soviet Russia. They were long-time friends. The communist manifesto, however, was used to establish communist rule in Nazi germany, though. You were right about that. They were huge commies.
