The standard route up the south side has been directly in line with where the Hogsback ridge went, and ended in a narrow colouir called "Peraly gates"... but this winter the snowridge (hogsback) shifted sharply to the west, elimnating the "straight shot" at the "pearly gates", so people have been climbing to the climbers left into a colouir named "old shute" which is named so because in the early days of the climbing the mountain, this was the more direct route, because the snow ridge terminated there. This year, the old chute is a little steeper in some sections than pealy gates, but has less exposure. I have climbed both routes this year, before the Bergshrund opened, so I have no realy idea how people are passing the schrund this year. Probably to the climbers right. I think that the FS is just trying to caution you, because it is getting later in the season, and when things warm up, there is a good amount of rock fall in these colouirs later in the day. If you do climb it, I would advise to do so before the sun hits that side (read: at night, or before full sunrise)... The south side is better, as are most routes on Hood, done in early in the spring or in winter, if weather permits. Check out the "oregon cascades" section of this board, there are lots of Trip reports with pictures of this years routes... And of course as suggested, Jeff Thomas's Book is one of the better guides to the routes on Mt. Hood... http://www.powells.com/biblio?isbn=0962904201

So if you had a daughter engaged in a divorce proceeding brought about by a husband who claimed infidelity, and you had to decide whether the case would be tried in a Western court, or in a court which enforced Sharia law - you'd flip a coin? Ditto for deciding whether a suitcase nuke would end up in the hands of a Baptist congregation in Lubbock Texas, or in a Mosque in northeastern Pakistan? Riiiight. so are you prepared to do battle w/ every culture that rejects our values? Apparently the United States is ready to... At the sacrifice of our soldiers... Which, by the way, if you are so much for a war with these people, then, why dont you enlist? Serve you fool.. Too old, I think not!! They just raised the minimmum age to enlist in the Army to 42!! Yeah, thats gonna be good...42 year old E1's... Hmm... Thats gonna be sweet!

How camera freindly do you have to be? Also, Do you need to be in shape to do K2? And isn't that in Pakistan... Is it a good idea for an American to hang out in Pakistan during these here "Jihad" kind of times?

I have been seeing these "lanes" at the top of the palmer ski area. I have asked several people on the mountain, and no one has an answer... Every time I see them (and they keep "making" new one} I wonder, WTF would you need this shit for... Perhaps some of you oh, so enlightened ones could explain... (I have seen a few trip reports where people camped in them, butthey are at 20Deg of slope. That cant be fun sleeping in...)

Timberline is @ 6000' or so... Does that qualify if you rent a room there, and do it? How about some towns in Colorado, they are over a mile high, do they count as well.... I am debating posting a porno link of a girl riding some dude on top of some peak....

Are you gonna evict the bums first of are they part of the "clean up"?? If so, do we get stun guns as well as the latex gloves? Police escorts? Just wondering, there seemed like a few of these guys (the bums) that are not too appreciative of people climbing on their "front porches" if you get what I am saying....

You don't need a guide. Just find someone who's been up there before and go with them. You just need to know how to dress properly (layered, no cotton), keep hydrated and have map and compass skills. That's about 10 pages of Freedom of the Hills. Nah, more like 62 pages if you just look at compass skillz and threads... Not mention the other chapters in between like camping, and food etc... But yeah, whatever...

No, this was a date hike. No shorts over polypro... If anyone else is curious, the "catwalk" is dry, though there was snow on Benson Plateau, so there's a little routefinding involved if you want to return via the Ruckel Creek trail. I was just up there today, and, yes there is some snow up at Benson Plateau. Of course I got a little lost, but thats what fun about snow... Where is this "catwalk" you are talking about? Seemed like pretty much most of it was a "catwalk"....

If you are in PDX, there is plent of snow before the gate on larch mtn rd. and the side road (I forgot the name of the road right now,the one rigght off to the righ from the gate) that should suffice your wheelin in tha snow pleasure... I got a little stuck this last weekend up there, it's a little slushy in some of the lower spots... But there is a good mile of snow covered road (read two feet or more) from the "Mt. Hood Forest sign up to the gate...

If you are in PDX, a chain of "whole foods" type stores called "new Seasons" sell a Bavarin version that is pretty close... (Thats what I use when I get a hankerin' for some smorebrod... Ikea in Renton has some too, but I fiind it hard to gulp down anything swedish.. Plus it's not as good as the danish stuff, or the bavarian stuff for that matter... -

Thanx for the tip, Went there yesterday, brought my footbeds and socks... Walked around for about 1/2 hour etc... they where a perfect fit... All the Employees where hmming and haawing when I bought them... Perhaps they too had an eye out for them as well... So, I have done you the favor, and you will not have to see them sitting there any more... They have a good home now... BTW, they looked like they sat in someones closet for about 8 years, spiderwebs in the soles and all... ( the pamphlet that came with boots stated 1998 catalog year, so I guess they where made then)
