  2. This is a useful site for sports injuries: http://www.clinicalsportsmedicine.com/chapters/16.htm
  3. There is 7 miles of snow covered road before the Killen Creek trailhead.
  4. Climb: Mount Hood South Side Pics-South Side Date of Climb: 5/5/2006 Trip Report: I have loads of pics online including several of the bergschrund here: http://www.alpinescribes.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=101 from my trip May 4-5. My tr is mostly self indulgent drivel and I doubt cc needs another Hood South Side tr but if you're really that bored you can read it on my site: http://www.mountaingirl.net/hood0506/trip.htm Gear Notes: used rope, carried pickets & all the usual bells & whistles. shoulda had more sunscreen *ouch*.
  5. Thx! I am a student (part time) and I'm self employed. Last week I was between semesters and I can work when it's raining I don't think I'd want to do this route on Hood on a nice weekend.
  6. $125 or will consider trades. This 75L pack is in brand new condition. I had it to review and it isn't suitable for mountaineering so I'm not keeping it. This pack is for your girlfriend or wife who only comes with you on the condition that you carry all the heavy shit. It's a huge pack and is quite comfortable (and light!) for loads up to about 35lbs. Do not buy it for heavier loads than that. The suspension just isn't strong enough. Well, buy it if you want but I warned you. More info about it here: http://www.backcountry.com/store/KEL0335/Kelty-Shadow-Backpack-Womens-4500cu-in.html?id=bvhbyMRi

  8. Wow... I've been gone for 3 days and missed loads! Thanks everyone... these are great. I'm happy to report that I didn't do anything too stupid this week (although I did forget to lock a biner but my partner caught it when he checked me fortunately) but I just had to share this one which falls under the category of stupid things other people have done. We were just heading up the Hogsback on Hood on Friday when we realize that there are four unroped guys sitting taking a break right on the snowbridge with the bergschrund open on either side of them and a 6 inch crack running a few inches behind them. I was in too big of a hurry to get the hell away from them to say anything.
  9. Thought it might be educational and interesting to compare stupid mistakes since we tend to learn a lot more from those than we do from when everything goes right. I hope this can be a construction discussion. The fact that it was a bonehead move is conceeded and doesn't need reinforcement. I think the most stupid thing I've ever done was heading up the Dragontail glacier too late in the day in August when I had been watching the rock falling the whole time I was approaching it. Must have left my brain back at camp but 5 other people merrily followed along. We thought we'd be safe if we hid behind a big boulder to put our crampons on then made a run for it. About 2 minutes after reaching our boulder the earth starts shaking and there's this low rumbling sound and one of our party screams (and I do mean scream) ROOOOOOOOCK! We all got as intimate with that boulder as is humanly possible as we watched two or three fridge sized boulders and many more smaller ones come crashing down, bouncing off our big boulder (that suddenly didn't seem so big) and spinning in the air over our heads. To make matters worse, when it finally stopped my adrenaline was pumping so hard that I was seriously considering going for it. Lessons learned: Stay off glaciers in the heat of the day STFU so you can hear rock fall before it's on top of you Don't necessarily follow the leader Bring an extra pair of underwear
  10. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Summit victory stories are great but it's ones like these that are really the most valuable.
  11. totally! I hate buying new gear for them as they grow so fast. Only problem with having a kids forum here is that I'm pretty sure this site wouldn't make it through the net nanny software I have on my kids computer
  12. I just picked up new shoes, boots and harness for my youngest at the MEC gear swap so we're all good to go. The full body harness was getting a little small. My oldest is big enough to wear my gear. Stood in line for an hour to get in and all I got for me was a pair of gloves!
  13. Mine like the climbing part fine... it's the hiking part we have trouble with. A few thoughts I came up with on the subject last year: I've learned that I have to take any time estimate and multiply it by 3 or 4. I've learned that I have to feed them at very regular intervals or their engines stall. Even when they're not hungry, I have to make them eat something... even if it's just a bite of chocolate. I've learned to take 3 times as many socks and clothes as I think I will need because if there is a way to get wet, my boys will find it. I've learned that I have to completely deconstruct expectations and have very different goals. I need to slow down and be there to experience nature from my children's perspective. This is a completely different experience from when I go without them. I've learned that there are many destinations along a trail and the summit may not be on the list today. The boulder field is a playground. The stream is a waterpark. The snowslope is a toboggan run. We mustn't rush through on our way to somewhere else. We're already somewhere. I've learned that frequent breaks pay for themselves in happier kids and more time on the trail. They are also great opportunities to reconnect and talk. I've learned that I can still get away with holding my 9 year old's hand as we hike long after the tricky part he needed help with is over. I've learned that you have to make kids do things they don't want to do even when it would be easier to just give in because that is what being a parent is all about and it's worth it.
  14. Good job! Thanks for the tr. Love the jumping summit pic
  15. lol amen... we need people with balls, determination and drive like that in this world. I'll foot the bill for the occasional helicopter rescue.
  16. I can often get away midweek but I'm in Vancouver. If there's anything in the North Cascades that interests you give me a shout.
  17. Thank you Couloir.. that's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. I rented the 1st season of House which is so far pretty good. Never tire of the dark brooding brilliant doctor role. I loved Bringing out the Dead... pretty much anything with Nick Cage in it is good. Gone in 60 seconds was good too... and had the added bonus of Angelina *yummy* I've been saving Eiger Sanction to watch on a rainy weekend with my climbing buddies. Vertical Limit was pretty silly but better than Oprah. Haven't seen Cliffhanger in a million years so I might check that one out again.
  18. did you get my email?
  19. I must be an idiot... where's that?
  20. I'm bored out of my freakin mind on my stair climber and need something to take my mind off the 60lbs on my back and the 60 min on the clock. TV sucks. I've watched Touching the Void way too much. Any other reccomendations? I tried that new 'SubZero' movie that is in video stores now and I can safely say that that was hands down the worst climbing movie I have ever seen in my life. It's worth renting just for a laugh. I actually watched it twice because it was so bad I had to show my friends. They're on the summit of K2 (which they got to in about 72 hours from sea level) walking 6 abreast with ski runs and trees in the background. And there's LOTS more where that came from. Anyway... something NOT like that please. I need some eye candy to keep me motivated.
  21. here's me: http://www.mountaingirl.net and I have links to lots of great local sites both resource based and personal sites here: http://www.mountaingirl.net/links.htm If you'd like to swap links please let me know
  22. Nice job! Wish you had pics. How long did this take you?
  23. hey RuMR... yeah lets plan something. I'll pm you my number. Thx for getting the ball rolling!
  24. omg that looks like SO much fun. I'm so not worthy. Amazing pics.
