  1. I've done it in August before. I think some of us roped up, some didn't and I don't think anyone bothered on the way down.
  2. Free permits: http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16084
  3. i used a 60m both times
  4. I was saying that Aasgard is steep and loose and that Snow is long and boring.... not the other way around. Although you do end up doing more elevation on Snow.
  5. I dunno... I like it. Not for a whole weekend though. Powerline wall is fun.
  6. I've done it twice and I prefer to approach from the other side. I just hate the snow lake trail. I assume ur camping since you asked about permits. I'd go in and out Aasgard but if you prefer long and boring over steep & loose take Snow. No idea about last minute permits. Call the ranger station. They're really helpful. Rapping off the N Face is dead easy. Just follow the rainbow of webbing. I think we did it in about 6 raps last time. There's a great camp site at Gnome Tarn just below Prusik. How long are you going for? Here's my tr from a couple months ago. Didn't think we needed another one here: http://www.summitpost.org/trip-report/206568/Prusik-Peak-West-Ridge.html Feel free to shoot me a pm if you want more info. I have loads.
  7. We might be up for something in Leavenworth if it's some time in September. I had an awesome time with my boys last weekend. Michael has definitely outgrown the body harness and also his pack so give me a shout if u need either for a smallish kid. Pics & a tr here if anyone is interested: http://www.mountaingirl.net/semaphore06/report.htm
  8. I think I sent $10. I'm on the starving student with two kids & a gear habit plan.
  9. My 10 year old has pretty much outgrown his full body harness. It's in perfect condition. I'm just gonna squeeze the rest of the month out of it so if you can wait that long I'll sell/trade it. The shoes part just sucks because their feet grow so fast. Buy big and have him wear socks. Kids don't enjoy having their feet crushed into shoes 2 sizes too small like we do anyway.
  10. Just got this in an email. For some reason I can't post in 'Events' so maybe someone can move it there for me: SQUMFF 2006, August 4 & 5 The Squamish Film Society is pleased to announce SQUMFF 2006, the inaugural Squamish Mountain Film Festival, taking place August 4 & 5 at the Eagle Eye Theatre, Howe Sound Secondary School, Squamish, BC. Each evening starts with a pre-show reception at 6:30 pm sponsored by Whistler Brewing. Shows at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available at the door or in advance in Squamish at Climb On, Valhalla Pure Outfitters and the Squamish Adventure Centre. Tickets are $15/advance, $17/door. The festival focuses on films and speakers from around the globe that depict adventure in the mountain environment, everything from sea to sky that is self-propelled. This year gets off to a stellar start with featured speakers Peter Croft and Sonnie Trotter. Peter Croft, now living in Yosemite, returns to his “native” Squamish to present “A Life of Adventure” on August 4 and talk about his quest for solace in the mountains, from the highest peaks to the depths of injury and back up again. Sonnie Trotter, who has just freed “Cobra Crack”, at 5.14 b/c possibly the hardest trad route in the world, and has the film and photographic evidence to prove it, will deliver his gripping stories on August 5. Breaking news: DREAMCATCHER, Josh Lowell’s short film on Chris Sharma’s first ascent of “Dreamcatcher”, 5.14d, in Squamish; and BACK TO THE WALL, Ivan Hughes’ documentary about quadriplegic climber Brad Zdanivsky scaling the Chief will be premiered at the SQUMFF on Saturday, August 5th! Complete film program includes: Friday KAYAKS ON THE ROOF OF THE WORLD (20 min): whitewater kayaking in Tibet; UNIVERSITY WALL (10 min): Squamish classic; THE OBSCURIST (12 min): heinous offwidth crack first ascents in Yosemite by Cedar Wright and Ivo Ninov; JACK OSBOURNE – ADRENALINE JUNKIE (50 min): JO, Ozzy’s son and a US mega TV star, trains hard and in what is to become his worst nightmare climbs El Capitan. Saturday BALANCING POINT (7 min): balancing rocks and martial art; SMALL CRAFT WARNING (excerpt, 3 minutes): kite-boarding in Canada; BACK TO THE WALL (22 minutes): quadriplegic climber Brad Zdanivsky scales the Chief; DREAMCATCHER (15 min): Chris Sharma’s first ascent of the hardest climb in Canada; BACHAR: MAN, MYTH, LEGEND (50 min): Life story of John Bachar, one of the most influential climbers of all times, as told by his friends. A complete list of films and additional information are available at: www.squamishfilm.com For additional information: Ivan Hughes (604) 603-2917 (Vancouver) (604) 892-2099 (Squamish) ivan@fringefilmworks.com
  11. I was once detained at SEA-TAC after flying in from the UK. They wanted to know what drugs I had brought with me. When I told them I didn't have any I was told "it's ok if you brought your pipes, as long as they're clean." They didn't believe me. I used to get hassled a lot more. Fortunately for me they're more interested in people who look like terrorists now and evidently I just look like a drug addict.
  12. i cross the border at least once a week. The Canadian border guards are way better looking... both male and female... it's bizzare. They must hire from the same place as Milestones/Cactus Club & Earls. Usually I get friendly border guards who just ask where I live and what I'm going to do and wave me through. Once in a while I'll get the guy who wants an itemized list of the contents of my sandwhich and tries to trip me up by asking tricky questions. I used to get hassled a lot more when I drove a truck. Finally just asked one day 'ok what is the deal with the truck?' and was told 'Bad people drive trucks ma'am.' Sometimes you get the bored friendly guy who's usually sitting just outside the booth in the sunshine and wants to shoot the breeze. He doesn't care that there's a 30 minute lineup behind you. I haven't been sent to the time out room for over a year now though so I'm happy.
  13. fyi we had some trouble crossing the river just past where the climbers trail branches off from Heliotrope on the way to practice and play on the seracs on Baker last weekend. I couldn't get my dog across but the rest of our party made it. On the way back though it was much higher and at least a couple people went in.... one up to her neck.
  14. The thought of having to be rescued because I did something stupid usually keeps me in check... with our without a sat phone.
  15. Those are gorgeous... thx for the eye candy.
  16. I like the Mountain Hardware ones too. They dry really fast so you can wash 'em, eat breakfast & wear them again.
  17. I screwed up. I thought that the Enchantment Zone ended at Prusik Pass but it goes out to beyond Mesa Lake so camping at the Lorelei lakes is not an option after all and have deleted that part from my previous post. That being said.... if Gnome Tarn is taken, it would be a great Plan B for climbers. And Cannon is right there which is a super fun scramble too. I have hiked the Snow trail actually so I'm authorized to knock it . I find that Asswipe pass is better on my knees in the long run. Less elevation gain/descent too. Being able to see my car for the last 5 miles through burned out forest was crazy making. But that's a good point about tired legs. Going down is worse than going up so if you're tired it would probably not be safe since just about everything you step on moves. Seems to just be a matter of personal preference. Here's a pic of the Lorelei Lakes:
  18. You got some great pics. I'm one of the dumbasses that has trouble finding the start of that route. I've done it twice now and got creative both times. Ur way harder than me. I'd do just about anything to avoid hiking in or out from Snow let alone doing it twice in one day.
  19. It was already getting to be a zoo up there at 6:30 this morning. There were at least 4 people on Diedre ahead of us and another 8 behind us last time I looked. We had Snake to ourselves at 6am a couple of Mondays ago though so you might be ok midweek. Start early before the heat and the after work crowds show up. Someone who's done more up there can probably recommend some good routes for you. There's a really fun 5.7 called Garfield (and about 14 other routes) at Comic Rocks which is about 10km S of Squamish that might be a good place to escape the crowds and the heat as it is mostly shaded. I haven't been there in years so hopefully someone can give you better directions. Maybe hit lighthouse park on your way out for some nice photo ops as ur climbing the cliffs right on the water. Very short tr's but a pretty spot. The double overhang is a fun 10ish route.
  20. Just above Shield Lake are the beautiful Lorelei (sp?) Lakes. You'd probably have less bugs up there as it's out of the trees for the most part. Truly a beautiful spot. There is a route in that follows an old logging road that starts off somewhere near the Stuart Lake but I don't know what kind of shape it would be in now. I can send you a map & more info if you shoot me an email. From the main trail you'd just go up Prusik Pass & over. Hang a left and make your way over to the lakes just below the Druid Plateau on Cannon.
  21. Anyone have 'em?
  22. Thx a lot for the updates. I hope everyone involved makes a full recovery. I will definitely keep this experience in mind when facing similar conditions. I really appreciate people sharing their experiences like this because it's a good learning opportunity.
  23. nice job! I've gone out Snow once and will NEVER do it again. It's freakin awful. The worst part is that you can see the damn car for the last 5 miles.
  24. Can't help you there... I've only ever gone in from the Stuart Lake Trailhead and haven't done Stuart yet. Drooled on it from Dragontail & Colchuck last weekend though!
  25. The Stuart Zone permit area doesn't actually include the mountains according to the little map I got with my permits so as long as you don't camp at the lakes you shouldn't need one. But give the Leavenworth ranger station a call just to be sure: 509-548-6977
