[TR] Colchuck and Dragontail- Colchuck Glacier 5/21/2006

omg I'm SO jealous of your pics! I can't believe what a difference two hours made! We were the party that were heading up the North Butress but changed our minds after talking to you guys about weather and timing. Check out the nastiness that was at the col by the time we got there: More pics here: http://www.alpinescribes.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=109 -
fishing for partners for July, especially weekdays
MountaingirlBC replied to gavastik's topic in Climbing Partners
Sounds like we're at about the same level only I'm not a good enough skier to tele I can get away midweek. I'm a girl with a car too. PM me and we'll take over the world -
wow... good job. we were on Colchuck when the crappy weather rolled in. I was recommending Prusik to some friends and told them I'd rather go in Aasgard. Do you think the Snow approach is better? I still wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole but if the general perception is that it's better perhaps I'll quit telling people how much I hate it.

Yeah, I have to admit that is pretty sweet. One of my climbing partners just got it. I ended up buying a GiGi for now simply because it was on sale

Anyone going to Leavenworth this weekend?
MountaingirlBC replied to MountaingirlBC's topic in Alpine Lakes
We decided to wimp out and get a hotel room. Would appreciate any recommendations for good routes in the 5.6 - 5.8 lead range or up to 5.11 sport/toprope. Actually I could really use a few good toprope recommendations as I'm bringing a couple of new climbers with me. -
Seems to be the best of a lot of bad forecasts so some of us are heading down in hopes of a few breaks in the weather and check out the Rockfest (http://www.featheredfriends.com/rockfest/2006/poster.gif). Where's a good place to camp? I've never car camped down there so I have no idea.

sadly the forecast is blowing goats so it doesn't matter any more *stomp* *pout*

They're not shoes but my Dunham Waffle Stompers are are the stickiest boots I've ever used. I feel like I have suction cups on my feet when I wear them.

Fatal accident at Chek, Sunday May 14
MountaingirlBC replied to J_Fisher's topic in British Columbia/Canada
Very sad. She was a very nice woman and a long time BCMC member. -
I was hoping to do that one this weekend but I don't think it can be done reasonably in 3 days. Yes, both the main access roads are out. Best access now seems to be North Fork Sauk River Trail via Sloan Creek/North Fork Sauk Road #49 which puts you 8.2 miles from White Pass. Road reports here: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mbs/conditions/road_conditions_report.shtml

Cool of you to post. I've passed it on to everyone I know who was up there (which is pretty much everyone I know).
-
Sounds like this road isn't usually open until the end of May. Does anyone have any current conditions? Was hoping to get up there next weekend. nps web site says it's scheduled to open on the 19th which would be perfect. Anyone have any more info?

Trust and your climbing partners (accidents)
MountaingirlBC replied to octavius's topic in Rock Climbing Forum
Glad ur going to be ok... I think minx is probably right... the physical injuries will probably heal faster than your head space. As for your partner, unless he's a COMPLETE moron (in which case.... out him) I would hope/expect that he's probably going to be a pretty conciencious belayer from now on. -
10 feet of snow at the th according to the rangers a few days ago.

This is a useful site for sports injuries: http://www.clinicalsportsmedicine.com/chapters/16.htm

There is 7 miles of snow covered road before the Killen Creek trailhead.

Mount Hood Pics- South Side 5/5/2006
MountaingirlBC replied to MountaingirlBC's topic in Oregon Cascades
Thx! I am a student (part time) and I'm self employed. Last week I was between semesters and I can work when it's raining I don't think I'd want to do this route on Hood on a nice weekend. -

What's the most stupid thing you ever did?
MountaingirlBC replied to MountaingirlBC's topic in Climber's Board
Wow... I've been gone for 3 days and missed loads! Thanks everyone... these are great. I'm happy to report that I didn't do anything too stupid this week (although I did forget to lock a biner but my partner caught it when he checked me fortunately) but I just had to share this one which falls under the category of stupid things other people have done. We were just heading up the Hogsback on Hood on Friday when we realize that there are four unroped guys sitting taking a break right on the snowbridge with the bergschrund open on either side of them and a 6 inch crack running a few inches behind them. I was in too big of a hurry to get the hell away from them to say anything. -
Thought it might be educational and interesting to compare stupid mistakes since we tend to learn a lot more from those than we do from when everything goes right. I hope this can be a construction discussion. The fact that it was a bonehead move is conceeded and doesn't need reinforcement. I think the most stupid thing I've ever done was heading up the Dragontail glacier too late in the day in August when I had been watching the rock falling the whole time I was approaching it. Must have left my brain back at camp but 5 other people merrily followed along. We thought we'd be safe if we hid behind a big boulder to put our crampons on then made a run for it. About 2 minutes after reaching our boulder the earth starts shaking and there's this low rumbling sound and one of our party screams (and I do mean scream) ROOOOOOOOCK! We all got as intimate with that boulder as is humanly possible as we watched two or three fridge sized boulders and many more smaller ones come crashing down, bouncing off our big boulder (that suddenly didn't seem so big) and spinning in the air over our heads. To make matters worse, when it finally stopped my adrenaline was pumping so hard that I was seriously considering going for it. Lessons learned: Stay off glaciers in the heat of the day STFU so you can hear rock fall before it's on top of you Don't necessarily follow the leader Bring an extra pair of underwear

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Summit victory stories are great but it's ones like these that are really the most valuable. -
totally! I hate buying new gear for them as they grow so fast. Only problem with having a kids forum here is that I'm pretty sure this site wouldn't make it through the net nanny software I have on my kids computer
