  1. old news, but still tragic none the less. I was on the Ledges in March and was right at the spot he fell at the top of the Chute.
  2. hmm...i'm in Alaska... I've used my Salomon leathers for ice climbing and Chugach mountaineering and have never had a problem. I'm doing Denali in 2006 though via the West Rib and intend to buy plastics for this upcoming season. My theory is...at 14,000 feet, there are two things that you need to be comfortable...your boots, and your sleeping bag. I've heard the Lhotses are just insane though. I'm going to go to AMH and check them out soon.
  3. a 30 foot whipper into a crevasse huh? damn, that's a big one. Very cool that he kept on going too!
  4. Man, that's awful...and kinda creepy. We were on the exit chute part after we continued the climb after the ledges in March, it would be a long fall down that thing.
  5. UBB12-ML-464882-ML- Going to move this thread to climbing partners...hope you all have fun. TTT
  6. Hopeing to climb Liberty Ridge for the first time during its last few good weeks. I climbed Rainier this March via Gibraltar Ledges. I want to do this route now too. I'm going to climb via another route on the 5th of July, then take a day or two break, and come back and attempt the Ridge. Basically, I just want to be on the mountain as much as I can this summer. I'm looking for partners who are around my age, maybe up to 30. I'm 20 years old. I ice climb extensively in Alaska so I'm quite comfortable on steep surfaces. If you're interested let me know. The sooner the better so we can coordinate and all that. A group of three would probably be the safest, but two would work as well. I'm sure there will be others on the route, we'll just have to keep our distance to avoid rock and ice fall. Let's do it. Climb on.
  7. i know that Denali gets cell phone service. Kinda funny I think since it's a loooong way from any big city.
  8. is that a dude or a chick in the picture? I really can't tell.
  9. How sweet Dru. For myself though, when I climb, I don't want to do the "standard route." Am I a super-human climber? No. I just have faith in my abilities and do agree that getting to the summit of a mountain should be hard and involve some true climbing or steep sections. That's why i'm not doing the West Buttress on Denali. I'd rather challenge myself instead of being positive i'd be able to reach the summit from the Butt. Still, dudes and dudets...even with all the O's and sherpa support in the world, getting to the top of Everest isn't easy. If I do indeed get an opportunity to try Everest many years from now, I hope to attempt it without the use of O's. I'd rather climb other peaks in the Himalyas though I think before Everest.
  10. She accomplished something EACH AND EVERY ONE of you would GLADLY do if you had the time, money and ability. So shut up and quit bitching and saying her accomplishment is no big deal. It all boils down to jealousy and contempt. Give it a rest will you? "Other than time, money, and general fitness, there's nothing challenging about slogging the seven summits. " Bullshit yet again. Need I even count how many people die on these "slogs" each year? Oh yeah...easy. I just find it so funny and disgusting how people are always trying to bring down others' accomplishments. Word to everyone...money may get you to basecamp, but it can't get you up the mountain. She did this herself. Give her credit where credit is due. And everyone would love to stand on the top of Everest, no matter what you say. It's just bullshit. this entire thread of responses is bullshit. Just because YOU can't, you don't think anyone should? Come on. I will admit part of her website is a little fishy, but oh well. So I'm going to do Denali next spring from the West Rib for my first time on the mountain...is that cheap? You won't be doing it so it probably will. Congratulations Danielle, you did a good job and i'd love to have your experiences. Being the same age as you are I really envy you and all that you've already experienced. You've lived what I am dreaming to someday accomplish. It's neat taht it was a girl too who did this.
  11. thanks fear, i'd appriciate that very much!
  12. I'm in Alaska...I'm used to long approaches! Haha. I do agree though Bug, that only means we are that much more likely to have that side of the mountain to ourselves.
  13. No one has any info on this? wow.
  14. Severe avalanche danger pushed it back to mid june. I've been climbing other peaks in the chugach...4 in the last 8 days actually (Suicide, O'Malley, Near, and Wolverine). My partner and I are going to check conditions this next week and possibly give it a go next weekend or the one after that.
  15. why are you armchair climbers even arguing about this? It's stupid and worthless?
  16. What do you mean by YOU rockclimbers? Is that some kind of offhand remark?
  17. Oh Rainier, how I miss you!
  18. My buddy down there in WA said that he saw on the news that two people died on Rainier sometime last week. I haven't heard anything about this and thought I would have heard something about it here if it happened. I know that two twin brothers (54 years old each) died up here on Denali last week. My friend who works for Talkeetna Air Taxi had to deal with the bodies and she said "I've never seen bodies so broken and black before." For some reason I think my friend is talking about this, but I could be wrong. Does anyone have any info? EDIT: Nevermind, I saw the thread in the General section just after posting this. Sorry everybody.
  19. Awesome! Thanks for the info so far guys! It is really helpful. It will help me plan my route/camp locations better. Just so I know for sh!ts and giggles, how many miles does it average out to be? Not like it really matters. I'd assume it's 70-80 at least? Ironically (but luckily) enough, there is hardly any info about this hike when I search for it in google.
  20. This guy who climbs a lot also insists on using one of these while sitting around the house watching tv. It works your lungs like the altitude would. I think it's a great idea. You are out of breath in a minute or two, and you can feel how it works.
  21. Awesome! Thanks DKemp! Yeah we did Carrie last summer and we saw SO much wildlife. I've never seen anything like it. We saw 3 bears, several goats and deer (they came right up to our tent), all kinds of birds, marmots, frogs, etc. It was incredible. goat in camp at Heart Lake http://image12.webshots.com/12/7/11/14/170371114fnLKRX_ph.jpg Deer in camp http://image14.webshots.com/15/7/13/57/170371357wjCBpo_ph.jpg Mr Goat up close http://image14.webshots.com/15/7/13/88/170371388OOvDuH_ph.jpg
  22. Ironically enough now, this makes me want to do the Lib Ridge even more. Very good read.
  23. I did Mount Carrie last year from Sol Duc. We camped at Heart Lake and my buddy told me about the Bailey Traverse and how cool it would be to do a 7 day trek. I want to do it this summer but need more information. My Olympic Park book is down in Washington. Who's done it or has any info. Let me know what you thought of it, where you camped after Heart lake, etc. thanks
