I seriously intend on guiding, or at least working, for RMI this upcoming season (2006) and am wondering if anyone can tell me what the process is for the guide tryouts. I talked to Alex, one of the senior guides and he said that in early May, they hold guide try-outs over two days. What type of events and such do they have you do? I'm getting certified in Wilderness First Responder as we speak, and this upcoming winter will be Avalanche I certified. I'm taking outdoor leadership classes here at school and was a communication major...something quite important for guiding. I've summited Rainier two times and have been led two out of the three climbs I've done on Rainier. I'll be climbing Denali's West Rib (conditions permitting) and possibly Mt. Hunter early this spring. I'd like to climb Rainier this X-mas and Spring Break as well, to get just that much more experience under my belt. I'm not looking for advice or opinions, but rather input from people who are involved or who have taken part in the try-outs. Any valuable input is appriciated. Thanks.

25 pounds huh? I suppose then you came back down into the Northwest fork and didn't descend the Buttress? How many days? How much food did you bring, what is the crux?

I've heard that there are very few good bivy spots on the Cassin too.

Either way, if we climb together or seperate, you should plan a few extra days after Denali (Should we somehow survive...haha) to hang out in Anchorage. Plus, We'll have to celebrate and get rowdy in Talkeetna after our return. Hopefully the Fairview will be open by then.

i've been too poor lately to afford any of these great deals. BTW, if you haven't already, go over to rockclimbing.com and check out their great deals thread. It's up to 31 pages now of fantastic deals that you can't get anywhere else. I've found some incredible deals through that.

Oleg, whatever happened to the West Rib? I'll be on that route in May and I think I have a great partner lined up already. Could use a third though...

I just killed another one. This one was actually really unique. I heard him out there so I ran out and he was about 35 feet away. He ran to the top of a tree and when I shot him, he jumped about 10 feet through the air really quickly and flopped around on a branch. He then dropped 30 feet to the last branch on the tree and hung there dying. I then unloaded round number 2 into him and he dropped like a paperweight. I also ran over one on the road the other day. That makes 6 confirmed kills in the last 4 days. ...

if you want extreme for all weather, I'd go with like a -15 or something. Check out Marmot's sleeping bags. I have a zero that I use when i'm there in the winter and I just bought a Marmot Cwm, a -40 bag for Denali this upcoming spring.

yeah it will be back. I was talking to Kelsey, and he said that the servers are being dicks and they aren't getting back to him. AMF is going strong, it will be back with a vengance. It is starting to really take off actually. We have some really big local climbers (Charlie Sassarra (first winter ascent of the west rib on denali, climbed with jack tackle, etc)) who are posting on it. It's nice to watch it grow. It will be back soon

[TR] Mt Rainier- DC with Overnight in the crater 8/8/2005
Kraken replied to Slog's topic in Mount Rainier NP
Yes Marie, it's the same as Camp Muir, you kinda have to register at the guide office. It's not a big deal, I looked into it. -
This is the only current SAR on Rainier as of 8/18

this sounds like chris mcCandles who went into denali national park and did the same thing in the early 90s. Oh, just saw several others commented on that same thing. Weird though. Just goes to show you that intelligence isn't everything...common sense always wins.
