[TR] Black Peak-Ski descent - South Ridge 5/26/200
Cobra_Commander replied to wayne's topic in North Cascades
What a great ski, and the views over the ridge at Goode are incredible. I found the first turn or two off the top to be a bit gripping, as I felt I was sliding towards the void... -
If you start posting warnings people expect there to be warnings posted whenever there is "danger". "risky" is also a relative term.

Did three fingers loose 1/3 of its snow today?
Cobra_Commander replied to downfall's topic in Climber's Board
he's talking about 3 fingers up in washington. those lines to the east of the palmer are big cracks formed as the white river glacier slumps down. the extend further than most people realize, and have swallowed a few climbers at times. Currently if you make a beeline for the hogsback from the top of the palmer climber's trail, you will go right over them. -
I remember watching a big slush avalanche rage down asgaard last time I was there. Whether conditions are similar to that day right now I'm not sure, but it certainly happens, and with enough force to be pretty damaging. It actually rolled off the south shoulder of dragontail and turned down the pass towards the lake.

It was about $230, and the guy was pretty sympathetic. He said it was the 6th toyota he had done in the past few weeks. Since the stock cat on the old tacomas is a bolt-on, it's really easy to drive up along side it and get in there with a wrench. The guy welded on my new one, but obviously that won't stop someone with a sawzall, which is what was used to remove mine. At least it made my 4-cylinder tacoma sound like a harley for a brief period of time, but it's probably pretty dangerous to drive around with unfiltered hot exhaust dumping out directly under the cab, with the gas line, my lungs, and whatnot nearby. Mine was stolen from a park'n'ride in Vancouver, WA. Not super busy, but definitely public and visible. I wonder what the total cost of meth is on the pnw community.

this is a well-known issue among toyota tacoma 4wd truck owners. I've already had mine replaced once after someone sawed out mine. Fun times. For example: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4176/is_20060410/ai_n16143183 Be sure to get your replacement welded on really well, though in my case, they just sawed it out.

Oh yeah and you can run any version of Windows you want (or even another instance of Mac OS X!) with bootcamp/parallels, and it will run faster than almost any other laptop out there. If you do any kind of web development, it's pretty much the ultimate setup - windows, mac, and a full-blown apache install locally to test.

Mac OS X is unix done right for the masses, finally. KDE/Gnome have tried to tame linux, but they are still designed by geeks with no style or understanding about what "normal" people want out of a computer. I use linux for a ton of server stuff in my job because it is so simple and configurable. But I HATE it for a workstation/desktop setup. The GUI stuff just sucks completely. It looks pretty but is nonfunctional once you try to do anything significant with it. I have recently started hosting sites, databases, and providing directory services via Mac OS X Server, as the hardware is so solid and the process is so easy. Open Directory is quickly becoming a solid alternative to Active Directory. Mac OS X has all of that as well, just without the gui tools. You can take it out the box and a 6 year old can figure it out. I'm continually impressed to see something my mom and dad use with no problem a machine that could host a massive corporate website/db right out the box. It's a beautifully-designed system. In short, I have access to anything I want for basically free, and I find the best tool for most jobs has been a Mac. They are just a pleasure to use. I've used Windows extensively, but very rarely for the past few years.

Sorry, didn't want to be a naysayer but the forecast I was looking at is here: NWS - Mt. Hood Just something to be watchful of, climbing those gully routes with incoming weather in winter. The retreat traverse to Illumination Saddle from west routes in a whiteout requires concentration and patience, and "breezy" likely means you are crawling on your knees at the queens chair, making the ridge traverse to the south side routes quite interesting (rope will be bowing over the n. side if you use one). But they have been wrong with those forecasts before.... just saying more than one party has been pounded with this wx setup and there is no letup in sight later in the week on long-range. Hope this info helps.

Wx is supposed to go to shit.
