Right on Joseph. Have a good one.

Dave….I sure don’t want the hiking trail to close as long as they don’t close the south side to climbing. To me….they are one in the same. Don’t you get it? To close the rock climbing part of beacon but not the major user group is complete bullshit. To me…..when the people who are in charge of the birds make a decision like they do ever y year at Beacon, it shows me they are completely incompetent to have this authority. It is VERY poor decision making with little to no respect for peregrine falcons. Then they make people like me out to be the bad guy because I don’t like it and say something about it. Screw that………I am not the bad guy here. I have a deep and rich respect for all birds especially peregrines, mostly because I have seen them up close and personal for the last 13 years at Beacon. I am not sure I can explain myself any more clearly. Take care.

That is because no one cares about Teiton.

There is no such thing as a left wing goon.

This "whale skull" sits in our garden out in front.

OK...so I got the "who" has the power wrong. But you get my point? Right? Would the WDFW close all of Beacon if the birds decided to nest on top? Or super close to the trail? Because if they would not close it……..then I hope you would see the hypocrisy in the closures and maybe point your “awesome” energy into bypassing the rangers and go right to the heart of the matter in Olympia. I don’t care what climbers make themselves look like…..and neither should you because it about the birds….right? The birds are the number one attention getter here right? I also understand there is a balancing act and you are doing your best to not fall to one side or the other……good for you. But…..the undeniable fact remains that the climbers are complete and total scape goats for letting the birds nest successfully year after year when the thousands of tourists flock all over beacon from ALL angles, yelling and screaming and taking pisses in the woods. Throwing there trash off the sides. I don’t think it is pointless to keep shouting at the top of my lungs (on the web) to close the main trail. It’s not pointless at all. It may never happen….but it is not pointless. I must stand by my morals just like you. Bush may never be held accountable for bankrupting this country and stand trial for high crimes and war crimes…..but we still must try to see that that happens. Same thing here. All I ask for is equality for all user groups at Beacon. Right now the balance is not 50 50. It is 99% to 1 %. Its crap and we all know it.

Joseph. What do you think would happen if the bird decided to nest on top of Beacon? Say 20 feet from the top on the east side. Would the WSP close the hiking trail then? How close do the birds have to nest to the trail of thousands before the WSP takes the tourists threat seriously? I am all for the birds and the closure if I thought it were done in a constructive manner. But to close “just the south face” to 1% of the user group is totally ludicrous. It makes no sense. This is why I call the entire process/thinking/closure total bullshit. If the state REALLY gave a serious shit about these birds….they would do the responsible thing and close the ENTIRE rock. I can see and have always seen that we will not agree on this. That is OK and this is a fine forum to discuss our disagreements. Have a mentioned a big thanks to you for going out to monitor out little friends?

Should others avoid it also?

Get well soon snoop.

I think the most important issue is the fact that the entire closure is BULLSHIT. Close the rock to a user group that is like maybe 50 strong. But leave it open to the hundred of thousand who use it. Why am I the only one to see this? THE BIRDS ARE NOT ENDANGERED ANYMORE. Peregrines nest on most of the skyscrapers in downtown Portland. They nest on the Freemont Bridge. Do the skyscrapers close down? Does the bridges close down? I know….I know….the rangers at the park level have nothing to do about it. I know that my one voice has no power. I also bitching about it on the interweb will do nothing. It still feels good (just like JH said). I love birds. But this particular closer is BULLSHIT through and through. Every piece of it. Do they even have the legal right to act upon a random bird? Did I mention that Peregrines are not endangered anymore? I climbed out there before they started closing the rock. That was back when they were endangered and the birds nested successfully every year. The climbers and the birds all got along just fine. CC tell us to “if there are birds there, let them be”…..I don’t see you at the trail head every weekend with a sign trying to get 99% of the user group to stop hiking on the rock. I don’t think anyone gets it. If someone blatantly shot all the birds at Beacon in front of all the rangers and confirmed there was NO Peregrines there anymore. They would still close the rock….for old times sake. It would give them something to look forward too……. A big thanks to Joe for putting his personal time in to jump through the hoops. Did I mention peregrines are not endangered anymore? Joseph….for a guy who is an incredibly liberal thinker…..you sure are one conservative bro in terms of rock climbing. Not that that is a bad thing….its just weird.

Why does the trail need to be closed?
-
Archie and Minx? Nope...I do have a picture of Minx.....I dont think she would be very happy if I posted of her.

Oh, the moral outrage! And 'enemy'! Oh, lordy now I'm feeling so victimal all over again - and as predictable as menstral cramps - clearly it's that time of the year again... The trail got closed because they repeatedly had people up under the East Face roofs two winters ago and that closed it. I have to agree with Ivan on this. Its bullshit to close the "HIKING" trail. So by that standard JH....if someone is caught climbing on the NORTH face left of the water fountain......they would close the parking lot? Sounds like someone (the rangers) are getting fat and lazy. Buck up butter cup and hike down there to patrol it.
-
Yeah, the GOOD part. I plan to hit the west/north side routes again soon though. funny, i was planning on putting a giant bolt ladder in Funny you should say that. Jim told me years ago he wanted to put a "BOLT LADDER" right over the roof where the trail meets the rock, where the sign is. I think you tried a route there a while back. This was Jims idea.

Only "part" of Beacon is closed.

Joseph. Come come you changed your log in name?

Anyone have a 3 foot wooden owl?

That's a pretty fucking bold statement to make with no metric with which to measure against. Now that's what I call a cop-out. The metric is the fact that I like every musician Feck has mentioned and he clearly does not like alot of who I post.

Well, we could do it yesterday if you wanted to work under the same standards of environment, law, and opportunities for your own children as the Bush administration. Maybe you should have put in for one of BushCo's 'last-60-days' environmental rule change specials to get rid of the closure and the Peregrines. Kind of all falls under the "damn straight I'm for the environment so long as it feels goood, is convenient, and doesn't affect me in the slightest way" sort of deals from my perspective. Haven’t we been down this road before? Didn’t we come to a conclusion that I am right and you are wrong? Just kidding. I suppose at the end of the day I am just looking for equality. For the land managers to treat ALL user groups the same at Beacon. When candy bar wrappers and coke cans get found in the nest, it is a good indication that they were thrown there from daily hikers, not climbers. This would indicate that the 600,00 hikers a year that climb up Beacon’s hiker trail would potentially due more harm that the 50-100 climbers that climb their yearly. It is not good when the land managers state openly in a public meeting that “they do not want anyone within 300 of the nest”, and the trail to the top comes within 200 of the nest. If that is the case then by his own definition of “boundaries” for the closure……he needs to CLOSE THE ENTIRE ROCK. The hypocrisy is astounding. I love Beacon Rock. I love Peregrine falcons. I do not like scapegoats. Equality is what is lacking in this particular drama.

When we will be able to prove that the birds are not endangered anymore?

I would put money on that fact that we like the all the same music. With one exception.....I like so much more than you.
