Circumnavigating Rainier on Skis - advice welcome
korup replied to Panos's topic in the *freshiezone*
Panos, I am also planning a circumnav this spring/summer. PM if you'd like to co-ordinate. -
How To Question; placing screws on steep ice...
korup replied to rockermike's topic in Ice Climbing Forum
Well, I'll call BS on your BS call. 10+ foot leader fall with crampons = broken ankles, or blown knees, 90% of the time. The reason you don't think so, is because 99% of people leading ice make damn sure they never fall. Physics always wins. -

I think an important thought here is that when climbing ice, SAFETY should be your top priority. Seriously, worry about style and bad-assness later! Even a small fall is essentially guaranteed to break your ankles: save the "pink-point" "redpoint" "french-free" BS for warm sunny rock. -
I ski the Kailas with Dynafits. Best setup I have ever skied on. However, if you are a beginner, DO NOT learn how to ski on Dynafits. Get some Fritshis (not Silvrettas) and then ski as much as you possibly can. Dynafits are fiddly, not super-user friendly, and can be broken by skiing hard-pack groomers.

Crazy T, Were you in overhead blower pow-pow? If not, what?

Well done guys. It strikes me as idiotic that the Ski Patrol didn't listen to your girlfriends. If they were not worried yet, given their level of knowledge about your plans, skills and equipment, why call in SAR?

The more I delve into avalanche/snow science the more I am starting to think people are kidding themselves when they think they understand this snowpack. There are simply too many variables and too many microclimates to get solid info. That doesn't mean everyone should freak out and never hit the BC, but as De Niro says in Ronin, "Whenever there is any doubt, there is no doubt." Natural triggered slides at 2500 ft? 8 foot crowns? In-bound avis?

yes, but only after Mary Magdeline tossed his salad.

Jesus fekkin H Christus, what's your life worth?

22 days, with 5 on the lifts.

NWAC report for this weekend looks pretty damn grim. A good time for the lifts, or some XC skating, IMHO.

what are your axes?

hey, I've got a pair of older slightly beat-up TLT4s in a 30.5 (12.5), but they run small, so 12 would be it. Drop me a PM.

Let's roll- we're the same size, and I had that debate too. I just got a pair of 174 Kailas skis mounted. Several friends kept telling me to go short and fat, but those skis seemed tiny. Several online calculators showed the effective surface area of the Kailas is identical to my 191 cm TM:EX, so something like the Icelantics is probably even much bigger than the skis you are now on.

Watch out for the #7 Tricam!

Given how it looks in the photos, I'd be shocked if it didn't fail with an elbow tap.... -
f and g, where are you? Or, more specifically, which Pass?

up last Sat. 50+ mph, and foggy. Poor coverage below Pebble creek. Should be pretty nice by now though!

Broken Dynafit in Downhill Free-Heal Experiences?
korup replied to pinegar's topic in the *freshiezone*
My understanding is that "locked down" is equal to a DIN of 12 or so; not totally surprising (but very, very good) that you released. If they are well mounted, I don't think you will ever rip it out; the design is such that it will release long before the binding fails. Skiing it tele-style? Ughh. Maybe for a long, flat tour, but not having any tension to the pivot would make it pretty damn difficult to control? I think I have seen polar sledging types mount it as you suggest (light, bomber), but to actually ski hard? -
Does that mean I am fu**ed then, at 190 lb, and 6'5"? Should I just stay at home?

Taking off Tele bindings & putting on AT bindings
korup replied to Blake's topic in the *freshiezone*
Yes, but now you can ski in any conditions without having to stop and whine! -
cheap and light. that is all. seriously, there are hundreds of skis that would work just fine. maybe get a shorter (160cm) ski with only a little sidecut (better for skinning).

I think a little town named Bozeman *might* just have a little ice.... and trad and ski sickness. And very, very cute girls, and a rocking co-op.

Well, snodger might be right, but I am not convinced. The angles at which all the Silvretta bindings release are just odd. I have a friend who blew an ACL on perfectly tensioned Pures- it simply never released at the fall angle. Used Titanal IIIs or Explorers are just as affordable, and I trust them way more.
