  1. I've got to work late tonight, so I'm not going to be able to make it. Go climb the routes Bill mentioned (Tiger Paws, etc.) - they're really fun.
  2. Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow dressinggown, ungirdled, was sustained gently behind him by the mild morning air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned: -- Introibo ad altare Dei. Halted, he peered down the dark winding stairs and called up coarsely: -- Come up, Kinch! Come up, you fearful jesuit! Solemnly he came forward and mounted the round gunrest. He faced about and blessed gravely thrice the tower, the surrounding country and the awaking mountains. Then, catching sight of Stephen Dedalus, he bent towards him and made rapid crosses in the air, gurgling in his throat and shaking his head. Stephen Dedalus, displeased and sleepy, leaned his arms on the top of the staircase and looked coldly at the shaking gurgling face that blessed him, equine in its length, and at the light untonsured hair, grained and hued like pale oak.
  3. Edna Million in a drop-dead suit Dutch Pink on a downtown train
  4. It's my opinion that Google's got some work to do on its "automatic translating" programs. At least they're not going to be taking jobs away from all the serious people at the UN or the EU anytime soon. Here's a choice excerpt of a "translated" review of a Nena album from amazon.de:

  9. Burnt out ends of smokey days The stale, cold smell of morning The streetlamp dies Another night is over Another day is dawning Touch me It's so easy to leave me All alone with the memory Of my days in the sun If you touch me You'll understand what happiness is Look, a new day has begun.
  10. the seasonal Twilight Ale from Deschutes is pretty refreshing this time of year.
  11. "Don Quixote" is worthwhile reading. The book is wildly different from the Quixote mythology that has developed in the popular consciousness. If you think it's going to be about a kind-hearted impossible-dreamer, the book will surprise you; it's really quite dark. After the Quixote, Nabakov's "Lectures on Don Quixote" is of course required reading*. *bold-face to emphasize the objective truth of this statement.
  12. Use your regular ice axe. Don't be using your shovel to hammer pickets in - though it'd be funny to see.

Is morality something that shifts around like that, Peter? I guess I consider it more of an ever-fixed mark, you know, like the poet says.
  14. What larks. Now it's time for a last obsidian stout and then . Keep the spray fires burning, oly and archie. We're counting on you.
  15. I think the CM crowd would impress the public a lot more if they made a point of obeying traffic laws, rather than making a point of disregarding them. I've never ridden in one, but they seem to generate a lot of bad feeling in downtown PDX. As a cyclist, and someone who doesn't own a car, I think it's a drag that the car-bike relationship has become so adversarial.
  16. Wouldn't dream of it. I mean that.
  17. wow, whatta coincidence. we were, like, thinking the same thing. or is it just the zeitgeist?
  18. But my computer hacking skills.... sorry, that's played, isn't it?
  19. I'd have to agree. My trolling skills are weak.
  20. What's "it"? And what does "is" mean anyway?
  21. I'm just trying to draw you out with faux Freudian slips. And 's too.
  22. Is the organization you work for called the Department of Defense?
  23. I don't know if I'm up for the task.
  24. Seven pages and no one's wrung a double entendre out of the word "boring." Sigh. And I had such high hopes for this thread, too.
  25. Look at that, back on topic. I guess.
