lincoln refused to recognize the confederacy as an independent country Do you really think that GWB's actions are any worse than, say those of Andrew Jackson (Trail of Tears), William McKinley (Spanish American War), Woodrow Wilson (war monger beneath a guise of liberal/pacifist), FDR (attempted dictator), or the administration of Ulysses Grant? i've mentioned several of those guys in past threads as assholes of course, so no need to switch horses now - i'm not terribly worried about comparing the level of asshole - bad is bad. fdr left a better legacy overall for certain than bush. jackson's on the 20$ and i seriously doubt gw will be getting any monetary enshrinement now grant at least could do SOMETHING right before he was president. mckinley had better taste in vice-presidents and at least could WIN the stupid little wars he got us involved in. certianly, GW will be leaving our country in a weaker place at the end of his presidency then all the prez's you mentioned, except maybe grant (who at least had a fine beard, and oh yeah, also managed to make it onto the 50$!) Grant was one of the worst presidents we've had. And who gives a shit if he's on our currency?

I do think our various interpretations of the Bill of Rights are worthy of discussion, though. there were already lots of good points in the thread. we have a constitutional right to bear arms, and there are limitations to that right. is one valid limitation to prohibit firearms in NPs? I think so - but several folks here don't.

what about it? my take is people like you discount the language of the 2nd amendment while trying to make the 1st and 4th amendment mean anything under the sun. that's inconsistent. i personally am consistent. the amendments are not absolute. just as you can't yell "fire" in a crowded theatrer, you can not own or use a firearm without some restrictions.

I have heard nothing but divisive, hateful, alienating, disrespectful rhetoric from the left since my early childhood memories in the 1970's. To blame the R's exclusively for the divisions in our nation is utter bullshit. The D's have been using divisive rhetoric both for their own political ends and just out of hatred and spite at least as much as the R's, if not more.

Joint-puffers can get together and smoke-out in the Muir hut or on their favorite belay ledge and not piss anyone off, and those who want nothing to do with it can add their names to the "do not smoke around me" list. I'll be the first to add my name to the latter list: I don't want your weed in your pack in my car, in your pocket or your mouth when you're climbing with me, or lit anywhere within ten feet of me on any occasion. Or any other kind of smokable product for that matter. I recall the early days of the cc.com "pub club". Someone at the communal table would say "Safety Break" and 2/3rds of the climbers would disappear for about 15 minutes.
