[TR] Mt. Stuart- Stuart Glacier Couloir - Gang Bang Recap 5/7/2005
jeffh replied to DonnV's topic in Alpine Lakes
Cheers to everyone for a great trip. Sorry to have missed the other cc's up on the route. OlegV did state that he heard a lot of swearing in the alpine air and the name Ivan as we reached the summit. Figured I should add a picture of Donn for all the great leads he provided me. It is a little out of focus but that is because it was the only time I was infront of him the whole day and I was breathing too hard to hold still. -
While I have never used the road to make a climb on Adams, I have been up there on many occasions. The road is very suitable for a 2wd car depending on snow levels. I've only been up there in the fall (Oct-Nov)so not sure when it becomes snow free. Trail up Stagman Ridge has always been in good shape.

Great trip report. Way to get out there and get it done! -
Was checking out the ice in the gorge on a trip back from White Salmon yesterday and saw a climber high on the Crown Point line. Kept looking for other climbers or a rope but didn't see any. Nice!

Great trip report and pics!!! What a beautiful day to be on the mountain and it looks like you guys took the best route to the top. Way to get it done. Very jealous. -
Heading up to Hood tomorrow for some outdoor training. Climb or Ski. Give me a PM if interested.

A thin pad between two socks may do the trick or at least decrease the problem. I've had great success with duct tape for hot spots/blister areas but it didn't work on this area. Thanks for the suggestion.

Currently into my second season using a pair of Koflachs Arctis Expe boots and on the last couple of trips started getting a significant rub mark on the top of my right ankle. It has yet gotten to the point of a full blister but could potentially become a problem on longer trips. It seems to be coming mainly on descents when my ankle bends and hits on the hard outside plastic portion of the boot where the foot and shin portion come together. I have tried multiple sock combinations, lacing them differently, duct tape, all without success. Really like these boots and don't want to give them up. Anyone else ever have this problem and figure out a solution? I suppose you could heat up the plastic part and bend it a little but I would be afraid just making it worse. Any information would be much appreciated.

I'll give you that. What I meant to say was: rain during skiing sucks. Of course, skiing in rain is better than work.
-
Just got back from TL and it was raining hard there. By Saturday, there might not be enough snow at Meadows to ski. Actually got a few good turns in near the Silcox Hut. Unfortunately, cold rain sucks.

[TR] Mt Hood- North Face: Left Couloir Variation 11/13/2004

Right on guys! -
Thanks for all the input. The AT stuff is still new to me even though I have been skiing all my life. I plan on testing things out Tuesday with the springs (single in each binding) attached. Probably just run up to Ill. Saddle on my first go around. Can't wait to take them to the summit soon.
-
Just bought my first AT setup and was wondering about the "climbing spring" for the Diamir Freeride bindings. It was not on the bindings when I bought them but the sales person said they would add it for no charge when they mounted them on my skis. Free is good and I figured I could always take it off later if I didn't like it. Is this a useful attachment? Has anyone not wanted it once they added it. Are there any disadvantages to having it on my setup. I have my resort setup so my AT stuff will mainly be for Hood, Adams, Rainier, etc type climbs/skiing. Thanks for any info.

After getting sick and tired of watching people skin by and ski down the likes of Hood, Adams, etc. as I slogged on, I decided to start spending the kids college money on some new AT equipment this year. Can't wait to bust it out!

Thanks Chad, not only do you put in a great set of steps up the route, you write a TR to boot. My thoughts go out to the families of the climbers involved in the tragedy that occurred today. Hard to believe something like that was going on so close and not even knowing about it until reaching the parking lot. That said, it was a fantastic day on the mountain. Figured there would be a bunch of people taking advantage of the weather window but, than again, it was during the middle of the week. Still amazed at the conditions in the Pearly Gates. That second tool just kept coming back out all day long.

Thanks for the suggestions. Really appreciate it!!

I have been climbing now for about a year and need to purchase a rope. Yep, up until now, I have been on routes on Hood, Adams, Shasta, St. Helens where I didn't need a rope, or if a rope was needed like Rainier and Shuksan, a partner provided one. The majority of my climbing will continue to be galcier/snow routes with higher difficulities but am interested in increasing the amount of mixed climbing I do as I improve my climbing skills. I don't see myself doing anything but low 5.whatever for the next couple of years if that. But I definately will be doing more mixed. I have been reading past posts on this subject, asking local gear shops, and people I climb with and think I have my mind made up but would like feedback from the people on this site before I do some more damage to my credit card. Would you go the double or single rope route under these circumstances? Single seems easier, more all-around, less overall wieght and costs less (I am not really worried about cost when it comes to a safety issue) Leaning this way with either the Bluewater Dominator 9.4 or the Mammut Revelations 9.2 If I go double, I could just use one for the glacier travel routes, they are better for longer raps, lower impact forces, safer with rock/ice fall issues and climbers using sharp instruments. If went this route, looking at Edelweiss Stratos 9.0 or Bluewater Excellence 8.6. Again, leaning towards the single setup mainly because it seems more versatile. Thanks for any comments and/or suggestions you may have on this.

Climbed Fisher Chimneys Wednesday and from Hell's Highway up looked good for skiing to me. Only a couple of small cracks just starting to show. Of course with the warmer weather, things could change a lot by Sat.
-
Don't have the clinometer download but just did the route yesterday and 50 degrees on Winnie's slide sounds about right. Of course, if you asked me as I was down climbing the sucker, it was probably more. Very enjoyable route.
-
Great trip report. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Been wanting to hit the Fisher Chimneys and my partner couldn't get the days off. Anyone interested?

Thanks for the info. Will probably focus my attention on other routes and save the west side for next winter.
