The discussion is not based on clarification between different factions of the religion. And as billcoe very clearly stated, the intracacies within the Islamic religion are just as convoluted as those within Christianity. I think at this stage most folks have a grasp of that--even if their vehemence doesn't give them time to back up and state that. About the right to believe as one will--sure, its hard to disagree with that. The problem is that ones beliefs are generally the basis for their actions (or at least I would hope so). If you are acting differently than what your belief system dictates, then you are actually coming very close to living up to that word most people misuse--a hypocrite. I agree with what you are saying. I am also assuming they are individuals just like us and can take a bit of shit. One thing I notice, when we are out there, we all tend to figure out how to get along--even if that means avoidance, changing one's plans, whatever. We all agree that being outside is in everyone's best interest and the more involvement in outdoor sports the more support our parks and wilderness will get.

Because you have worked with abused women you know that there are two mostly likely life threatening times for them: 1. when they leave 2. when they press charges so it should make perfect sense to you why she was reluctant to press charges. This very issue is why many states recently (w/i ten or fifteen years) changed their laws so that the state can press charges again domestic abusers and the victim doesn't have to.

I am not an expert on Cold War history--frankly, I have just not been interested in Russia. But I from what I remember from economic history books (layman's books only) the Cold War was over not mainly due to the disarmament talks (there stuff was getting old and crusty anyway) but b/c of economic measures we took after the detente (or whatever fancy word they use for stopping that idiocy). So I don't see this working for two reasons: first, the fundamentalist groups in the Middle East don't want our capitalist lifestyle and our comsumerist culture. The regular people over there may, but they get beat down for speaking up. second, they don't have a nuke; hence, it ain't mutual.
