They aren't in the business of altruism. They are in the business of selling outdoor products to people who can afford them. Anything else they do, they are doing for business reasons as well. Nepal, Tibet, etc represents the "Extreme" that people might aspire to. They are mere ideas to the masses that don't visit them. Those ideas are powerful marketing tools. Again, I'm not saying that all Outdoor Industry companies are like this. But I expect that many of the big ones that have to answer to shareholders are.

Best of luck with your child. The world does change quite a bit. All that shit you maybe never considered or were bothered with will definitely take on new meaning. Like the state of the world in 20 years for instance. Regarding the rubber neckers...we saw them come to cc.com during the hood incident. People just are curious about disaster. I have a book called "Great Disasters" given to me by my grandma (she always gives the best gifts at christmas). You can borrow it if you'd like.

Honestly, I had the same impression as Peter Puget about "your tax return". I'm sure you're an extremely generous person as you "founded the org and gave it most its money"...but why are we talking about you anyway? Isn't this about the Mountain Fund, which should be bigger than you are? Getting back to the point of your post, I think that these are corporations investing in their consumers. Sure there are exceptions, but corporations are there to please the stockholders, and investing "donations" or tax write offs in local or in country concerns makes a difference their consumers can SEE. How many of REI's customers think about traveling to Nepal but never do? A great percentage, I'm sure.

For Gvideo: Your system must meet the following requirements to stream videos in Google Video: - Windows 2000 or higher with latest updates installed or Mac OS X 10.3 or higher - Firefox 1.1+, IE 5.0+, or Safari 1.0+ - A broadband connection with 500+ Kbps If you're having trouble watching streaming videos, please make sure that you have the Adobe Flash Player plug-in installed on your computer. If you don't have the Flash Player plug-in installed, you can install it at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/'>http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/ If you already have Flash installed, please try uninstalling it by visiting http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157 After you've uninstalled all versions of the Flash Player that may exist, restart your computer. Then, reinstall the Flash Player by visiting http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/ If videos still won't play in your browser, you may need to enable JavaScript. To enable JavaScript in Internet Explorer, follow these steps: 1. From the "Tools" menu, select "Internet Options." 2. From the "Security" tab, click "Custom Level." 3. Scroll down to the "Scripting" section and enable "Active scripting." 4. Click "OK" twice to exit "Internet Options." 5. Close all browser windows and relaunch a new browser window. To enable JavaScript in Firefox, please follow these steps: 1. From the "Tools" menu, select "Options." 2. Check the "Enable JavaScript" check box. 3. We also recommend checking the "Load images automatically" check box. 4. Click "OK." Finally, if you have ad blocker, popup blocker, internet security, or anti-virus software installed, it may cause JavaScript to malfunction. Many browsers and applications allow you to disable the blocking or security mechanisms for specific websites. Disabling these features for http://video.google.com will disable them within Google Video's individual playback pages as well.

I think he means he can't watch the inpost videos. For Youtube: Videos on YouTube are streamed through an Adobe Flash player. For the best viewing experience, we suggest you install the latest version of Adobe Flash after removing any old versions you’ve installed. Please completely uninstall Flash before reinstalling the latest version. To uninstall Flash, please follow Adobe’s instructions, listed here: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157 Once you're done, restart your computer and follow Adobe’s instructions for reinstalling Flash: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash If the instructions above don’t resolve the issue please try the following: 1. Temporarily disable popup blocking software installed on your computer to test. 2. Allow YouTube.com as a trusted site in your Firewall software. 3. Ensure other applications like Quicktime, iTunes, Real Player, or Windows Media Player aren’t set as the default streaming application, as this might affect the video player.

I'm going to drive home via Lake City Way every day to visit my new Best Friends. If only the coffee didn't suck.

No, I honestly think that Carl has a problem. I'm worried about what this is going to do to his climbing and surfing career.

I have an 79 bus, it doesn't run. The engine is full of "stop oil leak" gunk from limping back from Moab last time I went. For you, special price.

Lets face it Mike, you would have failed without Proshell. " The next generation of Power Shield isn't the only excitement in the Arc'teryx pipeline. It also has teamed up with W.L. Gore this season to launch a new, three-layer version of Gore-Tex. The new product, called Proshell, has a “microgrid” back made of a nylon stretch weave that is more durable, lighter and more supple than GoreTex's former tricot back. “It often makes [the garment] more abrasion resistant on the inside and just [lighter] overall, which is key for outdoor enthusiasts,” Holding says. Proshell will be in Arc'teryx garments that hit the shelves in August, but Arc'teryx already is showing samples to its customers. Arc'teryx has found Gore's new product branding and in-store signage a tad too mass market in its approach, says Holding, and so Arc'teryx is working to customize a branding message that conveys the key points about its use of the new fabric. “We're not only saying it's Gore-Tex, we're saying our Gore-Tex is better than everybody else's,” he says. " So exciting! Throw away your old gear now!

Damn, seems pretty spendy for a Euro with so many miles. I would advise looking around a bit first. Here is a camper with half the mileage: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=221288549&dealer_id=55051645&car_year=1993&model=EUROVAN&num_records=&make2=&start_year=1981&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&search_type=both&distance=25&make=VOLKS&color=&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=98116&advanced=&end_year=2008&doors=&transmission=&max_price=15000&cardist=20

Looks like a fun day. -
Ken, The turnout was a little disappointing considering the number of people who climb at Index on a regular basis and the proximity making it not a huge inconvenience to get out and help for a day...but that said we had a some motivated people show up and build a short section of trail, as well as doing a bunch of maintainance of existing trail. We also had a BBQ at MisterMo's afterward. http://www.washingtonclimbers.org/Forums/showthread.php?p=1390#post1390
