I know I was just thinking about this post! 😂. Was even thinking of dredging it up myself. Still a fan of a few things: SpaceX and the scientists and engineers there. Also how Tesla helped make EVs mainstream. The solar power stuff is awesome too, but over priced and not especially innovative. Starlink has been awesome for some select use cases, but I really don’t like the pollution of the night sky. The man himself though, he is unfortunately a huge disappointment as a human being, even if you set aside his political affiliations. Turned out to be a real turd. I accept the shame of being naive about who he really is.

From 1979-1992 the glacier retreated another 25 m. From 1992 to 2005 the glacier had retreated 441 m, with 700 m of retreat by 2023. The upper section of the glacier has thinned and new rock areas are showing through. The long lower margin of the glacier extending to the right has melted out in 2005. The glacier is losing area rapidly and is honeycombed with subglacial caves with thin ice above, ready for more rapid retreat of this type 2 glacier. In 2023 we could see the bottom of the glacier in many crevasses. There is no retained accumulation in 2023, the third year in a row with no significant retained accumulation, hence this glacier cannot survive long.

Trip: Granite Mountain, Tuck and Robin lakes - dog route Trip Date: 10/13/2024 Trip Report: Kiba and I hit up another super crowded classic made less crowded by being late in the year. drove up to the trailhead and there were only like 20 cars! I remember driving up during the Covid years and counting some 200+ cars filling the parking lot and lining the road forever. Slept in the parking lot and hiked up to the upper Robin Lake. Super sunny and I didn't feel like doing much so we took a nap in the warmth and then wandered around the lakes up there. Next morning hiked up to Granite Mountain, really nice up there! I gotta find older pictures of Mt Daniel...wonder how much the glacier on it has melted out. I know the Hinman glacier was pronounced dead in 2023 I think? Yes tracks and points is easy. And photos too but Outsde imo purposefully leaves out a bulk export of photo way points

free is good! i loved it when it was free, or at least all the features I used were. but they started charging for stuff since i'm paying now, I looked around and found the maps in CalTopo to be better. It isn't perfect, but better than Gaia. also found some bad stuff about Outside, but I can't remember what that was, so I won't bother digging it up. but i didn't want to give them my money.

Yes the Alpine Lakes is perfect for the elderly. Glad I didn’t do all this stuff earlier because I’m really enjoying doing it for the first time now.

I went to one end the previous weekend, and the other side this weekend. there are a lot of people doing that traverse! I ran into a few. I would have just gone for it if I had one extra day...but I kinda of like the idea of coming from Dingford and adding in HInman for a longer trip (along with Iron Cap, etc) along the way. Would be less traffic for the first part of it for sure.

I must admit I’m feeling a little guilty for not posting any trip reports this year. While I have been getting out, it’s all just been hikes with my dog and summits haven’t been my focus. I’m just trying to get to all the places wanted to go but haven’t for some reason. This place I haven’t because the parking lot is usually full with a 1/4 mile of cars along the road. But this weekend there were just a few cars and it was a beautiful weekend. Next year I do plan on the traverse up here, but an extended on from Dingford. I’m sure many of you can guess the location this was taken from.

What are you guys using? Today I just decided to cut over to CalTopo from GaiaGPS. I've been wanting to get off GaiaGPS for a long while, ever since it was absorbed into the Outside. I've loved being able to keep sort of a journal of geo located photos of my adventures over years, matched up with pretty good maps. Of course loved it when it was free and you could add the photos and sync them to the desktop/web for free. Since then I've continued to use it till I tried CalTopo and instantly liked the available maps better. I'm less worried about my track as I rarely use that feature. I only wish there was a way to bulk export all my photos from Gaia so I could bring them into CalTopo with the geo data. If anyone has found the best way to do this, let me know.
