  1. Sounds like a great gesture, and one that's certainly been well earned (coming from a climber that's been rescued)! How does this play into day-to-day issues for SAR groups, such as funding or other practical matters?
  2. If we try to do every Tuesday, the turnout may be pretty variable (last week we had 3). My preference would be more like once a month.
  3. Haven't been up there recently, but there is a weather station at 3,000' on Gold Hill, which isn't very far away.
  4. Does not appear to be the case today So the plan is off unless someone with a better viewpoint (Anacortes or Oak Harbor?) can convince me otherwise.
  5. Any chance the Mt. Watson up near Baker is named for him? I couldn't find a name history for it in Beckey or SlummitPost. Now that we have rehonored-but-not-renamed (M.L.) King County and (Ira) Spring Mountain, maybe it's easier than a complete redo?
  6. Bump. Same idea for tomorrow, assuming the weather is decent. Reply via email: curtveld@comcast.net
  7. Yeah, Darin is on the money. Fittingly, that 10a is called the "Intimidator"! Grades are a bit stiff at Erie, especially the 10s. And Vantage tends to be on the soft side, so no suprise you noticed the discrepency. Once your climbing is ready, breaking into 10s becomes mental. Keep jumping on them and you'll get it going.
  8. I'm thinking I'll be there, probably around 7
  9. You know Tyson, you really shouldn't post photos like that of Erie. There are some naive folks out there that might become convinced that the place actually has some nice climbing.
  10. Good climbing, good folks and good grub - good for the soul!
  11. I climbed with a Yosemite local once who didn't like slab climbing, because "chicks with fat butts can do it". Thankfully, so can old trad climbers.
  12. Looking to climb 5.9ish stuff. Coming from Bham and could meet in the early afternoon. PM if interested.
  13. Great to meet y'all! I'll put my email on my profile in case anyone wants to get hold of me. Curt
  14. Sorry no TR, but this provides the theoretical underpinning
  15. I'll try to show up too. Glasses but no beard, and bald. Hope some of the others on this thread will show as well. Curt
  16. Tasty yes, but now you're talking California fusion cuisine. I make mine the way my Nebraska granny learned me.
  17. I wonder how much progress those OSU ag chemists at are making toward developing Moss-Sta-Gone, the product you really need. Good topic, Checat.

    The perfect BLT

A truly incredible creation: toasted wheat bread, the three key elements, a dash of mayo and a good shake of pepper. With such nourishment, it's sad I will not be ascending anything this weekend.
  19. Way to get the ball rolling, Tyson! I'm available Tu, We or Th.
  20. Sounds like Bham is ready for a pub club nite, for a bit of networking?
  21. I thought the hardware and rope techniques were reasonably sophisticated for the 30s. The scary part was to imagine going up on a huge route with absolutely no weather forecast. Overall a good, but not great, movie. Most climbers will enjoy it, but I definitely wouldn't encourage any non-climbing family members.
  22. That is typically a good time of year for that type of climbing - weather during your visit could be the limiting factor. Several classic North Faces are Buckner, Maude, Shuksan and Redoubt. Get some guidebooks (Beckey or Nelson) and/or dig into old trip reports for details.
  23. Dang, looks like fun. Cool tree shots!
  24. Well, I sincerely hope he was reincarnated as a dog...
  25. About halfway through it, and what a great read! Daniel Arnold researched early Sierra pioneers (Muir, King, Clyde..) and repeated their outings with equivalent technology: No synthetic fabrics, no sleeping bag, no topo maps. Anyone else read this?
