And another 14"s today. Sun starts tommorow. Possiblity of more precipitation mid next week.
-
Ha! I'm going to be skiing the freshiez this weekend!
-
Using that formula we are now up to 16.8"s of snow above 8000ft. Last night Timberline received another 1.52" of liquid precipitation which extrapolates to 15.2" of new snow at 8000ft. Total for Mt Hood since this weekend: About 3-4ft of new snow at 8-9000ft. The volcanoes north of Hood got even more.

Look at the perfect conditions at Tline right now: If you believe the formula that .1" of liquid preciptation equals an 1" of snow at FL then based on Timberline's telemetry at ~8000ft Mt Hood received about 16"s of snow last Sunday and 14.48"s so far today.

No photos of Snowdome. *sniffles* BTW, if you guys have dynafit compatible boots you're welcome to take a run on my skis that I stashed at the base ;-)

You guys have it all wrong. I've already solved this question for CC, it's a Sasquath of course! In fact the other day I was at CC's house and took this exact photo:

.SYNOPSIS...A CHANGE TO A COOL RAINY WEATHER PATTERN IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST IS UNDERWAY. RAIN AHEAD OF A PACIFIC COLD FRONT HAS BEGUN ON THE NORTHERN COAST AND WILL SPREAD INLAND TONIGHT AND CONTINUE THROUGH SUNDAY. THE COOL AND WET WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE MIDDLE PART OF NEXT WEEK AS AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH ESTABLISHES ITSELF OVER THE PACIFIC. <snip> SHOWERS WILL PERSIST TUESDAY BEFORE A STRONGER SYSTEM MOVES IN MID WEEK. THE NORTH PACIFIC HAS BECOME VERY ACTIVE WITH THE INJECTION OF ENERGY FROM THE LATE TYPHOON MEGI. WITH MODEL PRECIPITABLE WATERS AROUND 1.5 INCHES ACROSS THE FORECAST AREA FOR ALL OF THE WEEKEND AND WELL INTO NEXT WEEK A WET SOLUTION SEEMS REASONABLE. Now how again do I get to the 20,000ft volcano around here?

Virtually anything that gets fat people to be less sedentary is probably good. I think Iain said it best here.
-
Isn't it actually 4 lifts to get to the very top? Heather, Shooting Star, Hood then Cascade.

I completely agree. The best example of Bachelor's sickness is the Nordic Freestyle Terrain Park! Quoting from my 03/04 Nordi Brochure, "(this is) the first ever terrain park for cross country enthusiasts. The Nordic Park features jumps, rollers and other suprises designed to add a whole new element to cross country skiing". Complete sickness! I just wish my skin-tight lycra bodysuit had more padding . . .

If they didn't sell me a season pass I'd probably buy a punch card plus lift tickets which aggregate cost would exceed $400. Since I'd be spending more per ski day I'd also likely stay longer therefore purchasing food, beer, etc which I typically don't do now. I'm sure there's plenty of others here who could say the same. In my expereince virtually every resort seems to do this. Before I moved to PDX fulltime last Winter I skied a lot at Kirkwood in Cali. By far I think they were much more greedy in terms of opening lifts and giving extra services to dirtbag pass holders. I've only skied Bachelor a few times but they do seem to handle large crowds excellently. To me terrain is a bigger factor then how a resort treats pass holders. IMO all Oregon resorts equally suck in regards to terrain. I wish Crystal was closer.
-
My main objection is there wish to develop Cooper Spur into a mega destination resort. Luckily, thanks to a lot of the folks on this site, there's been such a backlash against them it appears they've virtually abandoned this plan. Terrain and crowds are secondary objections. Opening more lifts at 8:30 is very welcome. I wish more resorts would do this, it increases uptake capacity without ruining wilderness. As much as I hate Meadows, for $400 I'll get a season pass. My rationale is that I'll ski so much Meadows will actually lose money by selling me that pass :-).

I completely agree. Meadows absolutely sucks.
-
You didn't actually state whether they would be back or not so I just checked the Meadows site now. Indeed they are back. They go on sale September 1st. Other newsworth changes at Meadows are: - A new highspeed quad which will go up the ridge overlooking Timberline. Meadows claims this will, "access great expert powder caches" and "alow freestylers to hit Vista Park, South Park AND the SuperPipe all in one run". The latter I don't care for, the former sounds nice though I'm having a hardtime wrapping my mind around where these "expert powder caches" are. - Opening HR Express, Shooting Star and the new quad at 8:30am. This is a *very* welcome change! - A lame new "Front Line Guide Service" which will offer, "Fast paced guided mountain tour with lift cutting privileges. Hook up with our EpiCenter staff for some laps – it’s not a lesson, it’s not a race – it’s going skiing and riding with a friendly guide who can get you the terrain and the vertical you want AND take you to the head of the lift line". Lame becuase it involves lift cutting! The first two changes are welcome, the third is not. This is all from http://www.skihood.com/whatsnew.htm.

The Snowdome was absurdly good today! Gone are the "big dust suncups". The surface was smooth, very smooth--much smoother then when I skied it 4 weeks ago. The 'dome as seen from it's base on Sunday 8/8: Cross-post (bad style, I know) of freshiez labeled: My skis in a patch of freshiez! Some guy I don't know but photographed anyway enjoying the great snow: Our (a party of 3 and me) tracks on the lwr dome: I'm such a slut that after I finished with the 'dome I put tracks on the tiny snowfield below Langille Crags right next to some poor souls boot glissade path. I could see my tracks all the way down the moraine but this photo don't come out so well: Snowdome far exceeded my expectations today. PS: Thanks for letting me hijack your thread. PS2: I recommend everyone who climbs the Coe carries skis with them.

Check it out!

Are any of the cyclists here concerned about being squashed by cars? I've been thinking about getting a road bike but the memory of a childhood neighbor's father getting killed mitigates my thoughts. FWIW the guy was a very experienced cyclist.

Any photos of the Snowdome?

You actually need to run under 7:26 per mile, not 7:40. Sorry to correct. -

I've never heard of ORRC putting on a marathon. They do however put on a 20k and 50k around Hagg lake in February. Could this be what you're thinking of? It would not qualify you for Boston but looks like a fun and muddy event. ORRC website is: http://www.orrc.net/ I've never heard of a marathon in Seaside but there is a marathon in Newport, OR in June. This would not help you with qualifying unless you were trying for 06. http://www.newportmarathon.org/ In addition to the Portland and Seattle 'thons there is a marthon in Victoria which is a week after Portland. I wouldn't recommend doing both, but if you forwent Portland it'd give you an extra week of training. http://www.royalvictoriamarathon.com/ There really isn't a ton of marathons in the PNW so you don't have that many choices here. MarathonGuide.com lists most marathons in the US here: http://www.marathonguide.com/races/Races.cfm Re recovery: I'd say any less then 8 weeks between 'thons is really pushing it. 8 weeks would give you 3 weeks to recover, 2 to train and 3 to taper. Everyone recovers differently and if you don't want to run these at your fullest potential you may be able to get away with less. Elite marathoners seems to usually have almost 6 months between their marathons. Eg, none of the US mens olympic team will run a marathon between the trials in Feb and Athens later this month. I'd strongly urge you to go to the library and pickup Advanced Marathoning. The book is useful regardless of how fast you wish to run. If nothing else it'll make you aware of the hardwork required to run a decent marathon. -

How old will you be on the date of the Boston marathon? As you probably know the qualifying times are based on age and gender. An exact 8 min/mile pace puts you at 3:29 (which would qualify you only if you're 45 or older). To run a sub 3:15 (qualifying for 35 or older) you'd need a mile pace of 7:24 or faster. The qualifying times can be seen here. What are you recent 10k, 15k or half marathon race times? If you've been training fairly constantly for 4 months you can extrapolate from these your ballpark marathon performance in October. Most likely unless you can run a sub 42minute 10k right now you will not be able to run a sub 3:15 marathon in 8 weeks (which is when the PDX Marathon is). I disagree--as would a ton of other runners--with the recommondations of Jeff Galloway's book. Gallowalker's book is great for folks who just want to a finish a marathon regardless of time but it's not designed for the serious runner which is what you need to be if you want to qualify for Boston sans considerable genetic gifts (which you may have) or an EPO 'script (which if you have please PM me ;-)). You can read a portion of the many Gallowalker gripes here. Rather then Gallowalker I'd recommend getting a copy of Advanced Marathong by Pete Pfitzinger and Scott Douglas. As long as your serious about training you will benefit from this book regardless of your running level. Good luck! -
