Given headlines recent headlines such as Study: College students' literacy skills lag By BEN FELLER The Associated Press WASHINGTON — Most college students nearing a diploma cannot handle many complex but common tasks, from understanding credit-card offers to comparing the cost per ounce of food." Where do you stand? Why? Interested to see what people closer to the trenches (parents, teachers) have to say.

One article in Science isn't going to 'make your career'. It might get people to notice you but if the original ideas were your advisor's and you don't have a lot of good ones of your own then that funding teat is going to dry up pretty quickly.
-
That is pretty unusual. On the one hand, it could just be the professors being political and not wanting to bite the hand that feeds them (kinda like the US climate science community) or it could be that the Science editors actually did ignore criticisms by the the reviewers. It kind of sounds like there's a bit of both going on here.

1. Don't sneak up on them too fast or you might scare them. 2. Don't grab their fleece too hard because they might bolt or kick. 3. Consider their needs.

Beer in bottles: Whack bottle cap off with Alien. Beer in cans: Girth hitch pull tab. Attach Alien to sling, insert Alien in crack. Pull on can. Voila! You may now return to masturbating to the Victoria's Secret catalog.

Well, reading this thread satisfied my quota of vicarious stupidity for the day. Nice job guys. Way to show off your finer qualities. You're probably all black-listed now.

You spent $400 to listen to future high school dropouts repeatedly scream 'Send it, dude!!!!!'??????

Dude, just a warning: There seem to be these little furry critters there that clamp on to any appendage sticking out of your clothes. Some sort of Mongolian parasite or sumpin'. Might wanna keep that in mind next time you heed the call o' nature.

January 19, 2006 Since our foundation in 1934, we have been developing our business in photosensitive materials on a global scale, thanks to the support and patronage of general consumers, retailers, photograph wholesalers, and various others. The unexpectedly rapid shift toward digitalization has greatly reduced demand for films and photographic products. The entire photography industry, including our company, has been put in a difficult market situation. In order to respond these difficult market changes, we are currently proceeding with comprehensive structural reforms. Despite the current challenges, we believe that photography is indispensable to humankind because of its ability to express such precious things as joy, sadness, love and the full spectrum of emotions. Our mission is to preserve and nurture the culture of photography to meet the needs of our longtime customers. Silver halide photography, which is fundamental to photography, has advantages over digital in such areas as power of expression, long term storage capability, reasonable prices, easy handling and a highly established and convenient photo development and print infrastructure. We intend to continue our silver halide photography business and to further cultivate the culture of photography, and in so doing, continue to support our customers and retailers and all those who enjoy photography. But you forgot the rule where it's ok for them to do it to us because they aren't oppressing us.

Griz, I should be spending more time in my darkroom myself, but I keep getting distracted. Quite sad really except I started working on this science thingy after work and then started training for Denali and I seem to lack as many hours in the day as I need.

Who needs electronics when you have ebony wood and titanium?

www.afs.org, but I don't think they have too many 3rd world countries on the list.

How about a exhange student stint in a third world country? Knock his perspective around a bit.

This is the better version "If you don't have anything to do, I'll find something to keep you busy".

You seem pretty good at it yourself! We should form a team! Yay us!

Perhaps you should go read a book or two. You did learn that didn't you? I mean something other than cruising through People magazine looking for pictures of Paris Hilton. I had a gf in college with a mild form of clinical depression. She was also a PhD in psychology. I got the full on run down on it, thanks, Oprah.
-
What this kid has is NOT clinical depression.

This also came up on my large format photography bulletin board but no one is really worried. Most of the point being that the Nikon guys were talking to tech people in a tech rag so of course they're going to tout their digital stuff. Notice they're keeping their top of the line cameras. Film isn't going away.

How about no allowance and if he wants anything even slightly spendy, he has to pay half, which means work? That's the way my parents handled it. Seems to have worked out ok. Of course, I grew up in Anchorage before and during the pipeline days so maybe I already benefitted from the lack of popular culture.

You need to have some meetings with some Professional Certified Counselors and stuff to help him discover his True Path and then you need to enable him to Realize that path without Controlling him or Criticizing him.

If he likes staying in one spot, chain him to a tree out back and give him a cord or two of wood to chop.
