odd trivia The slogan on New Hampshire license plates is "Live Free or Die." These license plates are manufactured by prisoners in the state prison in Concord.

Girl: C'mon just lean over and pick up the beer like this. Guy: Umm...no. I saw some monkeys on tv do this with their feet. I just gotta concentrate. Must...get...beer!

Not political but sheds some light. So, just before Dr. Leary dies, he says in a speech that 80% of all health care dollars for a particular patient are spent in the last six months of that terminal patient's life. I haven't found the source for this statistic. It's kind of like that saying, 'you only use 10% of your brain cells', sumthin like that.

I gotta say, Trask, I’ve misspoken before but your post requires response. I’m guessing your post implies something like, “Loose lips sink ships.” That’s a wartime saying for when our country was gravely challenged. It seems the key word here is ‘classified’. Otherwise, if our government employees (elected, appointed or whatever) followed the Code of Ethics for U.S. Government Service then that means that one is obligated to the American People (government by the people, for the people, of the people). Here are some of the obligations: Put loyalty to the highest moral principals and to country above loyalty to Government persons, party, or department. Uphold the Constitution, laws, and legal regulations of the United States and of all governments therein and never be a party to their evasion. Expose corruption wherever discovered. Uphold these principles, ever conscious that public office is a public trust. Is the American public to have a wartime attitude like WWII? That’s what I’m reading. Even some instances of classified info can (or should be) leaked if the greater good is served. So, I think we have to make distinctions rather than make a blanket prohibition on disclosure. Remember transparency of government is better than an environment of coverup. Code of Ethics for US Government Service adopted July 11,1958 [ok, im waiting for winter or lummox to get on my case] I realize it's not a perfect world, leaders are not ethical.

Equally appalling, Dru. I'd like to know why the US government and perhaps other Western countries are kowtowing to the Saudi state. I wasn't old enough to remember much of the 1973 oil embargo but I heard that things were so bad during that time that people for threatening each other with guns in the lines outside of gas stations. In 1979 the Iranian militants took 273(?) Americans hostage (don't know if any Canadians were seized) and held them for what, 9 months? Are we going to let them (hardliners) take us hostage again?

Three British men (James Lee, Peter Brandon, and Glenn Ballard) were arrested by the Saudi police and tortured into confessing to crimes they didn't commit. They were released last month with pressure from the British government after the men had received the full Lubyanka torture treatment. This is a load of crap from a country that pretends to be a legitimate member of the community of nations. Why aren't we investigating these bastards? Especially after 911? Story here:Yeah, this is a right-wing journal--so, what?

My bad. Should've said that region of the world. They do share a common border. Here's what I was emphasizing: Hey, Winter. Suck a nut.

? Seems a lot is going on in Nigeria (Niger). We really don't have a good grasp of what's happening in the world with regard to future trends. Provisions under the Patriot Act allow federal agents to subpoena journalist’s notes and effectively breach journalistic confidentially. Light speed, baby!!!!!! Ahhahahahaha!!!

Hmmm....Nigeria?

you're not going to argue with me because you're losing. so somebody posts a story about how dangerous guns are and you say cars are just as dangerous. i point out that cars are regulated by police so why not regulate guns the same way and you say never mind that arguement. why bother argueing with morons. I gotta jump in here. First I really don't believe people really need hand guns or some of the other weapons that you can get out there, it is completely ridiculous. At the same time I believe everybody should have the right to own one if you want. Only thing I wish is, if people misuse them or are completely irresponsible, their rights should be taken away and in this particular case. The adult that owns this gun that the 4 y.o. used should be proscuted with at least manslaughter. The kid is not responsible for the death that occured, it is the idiot that created the atmosphere for this to happen in the first place. lI1|1! the last thing I think we need more regulation, sorry I am big boy and don't need anymore big brother watching over my shoulder. All more regulation is going to do is create more bullshit, more hoops to jump through, more forms to fill out, more things to registar for, all because we want big brother to watch over our neighbors shoulder to make us feel safe. Fuck that, I am not going to feel any safer. Where do we draw the line, it is not just guns that can kill, there are all kinds of other things out there that can be used, have been used and will continue to be used to kill people. Our problem is not with guns, it is our culture. Removing guns does not change who we are. We will still be able to blow up each other, stab each other, poison each other, ect. The real problem is how do we change who we are as a society? What the hell does the following mean? --Ninth Amendment to US Constitution
-
No to both. Our right to privacy doesn't seem so iron-clad. --4th Amendment to US Constitution Basically, the 4th Amendment protection is extended "to safeguard the privacy and security of individuals against arbitrary invasions by governmental officials." These government searches typically involve investigation of suspected criminal activity and require a warrant. Now, here's an important exemption for non-criminal investigations as stated: "Certain administrative inspections utilized to enforce regulatory schemes with regard to such items as alcohol and firearms are, however, exempt from the Fourth Amendment warrant requirement and may be authorized simply by statute." One particular exemption with regard to firearms was granted in order to comply with the Gun Control Act of 1968. See my thread on Judicial Activism regarding the right to privacy. The so-called right to privacy is not specifically guaranteed in any one amendment rather it is inferred from several. The right to privacy is called a penumbra right. Griswold v. Connecticut 381 U.S. 479 (1965) Ok, I'm no lawyer so call me full of shit.

Here's another interesting statement made by the senior Bush that may have some bearing on current matters: --exerpts of remarks by President George H.W. Bush during the dedication ceremony for the George Bush Center for Intelligence, April 26, 1999 Did Tenet and his agency do their job this time around? I read somewhere that there was some disagreement between the Defense Intelligence Agency and the CIA concerning the interpretation of the gathered intelligence on the Iraqi situation. Refer to Murphy's Law thread and this link: CIA Headquarters

Karl Rove doesn't hold an office, even an appointed one. He is basically an employee of Bush's. He is a political advisor. The Code implies certain obligations for government service, one of these is to expose corruption and deceit. Perhaps there is a conscientious person in the administration who realized a tactical error was committed by the two others in their disclosure. This source is only identified as a senior administration official. I understand that Rove is a political strategist, a modern-day Machiavelli, in Bush's employ.

Ok. I'm not engaging in partisanship. I just want to know what happened to the Code of Ethics for U.S. Government Service adopted on July 11, 1958? Code of Ethics for Government Service Politicans from both major parties should review this code to refresh their memories. Here's a few statements from the code: Put loyalty to the highest moral principals and to country above loyalty to Government persons, party, or department. Uphold the Constitution, laws, and legal regulations of the United States and of all governments therein and never be a party to their evasion. Expose corruption wherever discovered. Uphold these principles, ever conscious that public office is a public trust. It really is too much to ask, isn't it?

Priceless!

I mentioned this turn of events in the Murphy's Law thread. At this point, these are only allegations which may never be verified. Did we ever find out who Deepthroat was?

Awesome, Classic Crack goes at 5.8+. You seem to have a good idea what you need to do. I'd listen to my own instincts rather than blindly following someone else's suggestions. To warm up, I climbed some stuff at the Tietons' Royal Columns in the mid 5's that I thought would be easy and I was pleasantly surprised. Climbed Stacker, Good Timer, and Level Head (5.4-5.6, located to the left of Western Front). Then I led Mush Maker (5.7, ***). It starts as a hand jam/stem and progresses to a hand/foot jam. It really caught my attention! I swore to God that route was sandbagged! Hahahah, it was fun looking back on that experience. Yeah, and the thing I wanted to say is that there are fewer people at the Tietons and potentially less pressure on you to go too quickly so you can make good gear placements.

I don't want to turn this thread into an indictment of what we (US) have done or were believed to have done in the past. If I had wanted to I would have brought up the Shah of Iran. Realise that I'm pointing the finger at the rulers instead of the religion in general. They're using religion as social control. To stay on topic I ask this question. Are the current rulers in Middle Eastern countries promoting long-term stability or eventual chaos? They're playing a dangerous game with their own people by simultaneously inciting them against us while at the same time pretending to be our ally against instability in the region.

Tying two threads together: The Next Big Terrorist Event AND Planning Your Next Vacation? So yeah, over the last few days reading the spray threads, I started thinking about the juxtaposition of laws and technology, in particular Islamic law and nuclear technology. Recall a thread started by Minx titled Human Rights. It revolved around the story of a Nigerian woman sentenced to death by stoning for having sex outside of marriage ( Amina Lawal and Sharia (Islamic law). Without getting into aspects of crime and punishment, I now introduce another recent story. On Sept. 26, 2003, Nigeria launched an earth observation satellite ( Nigeria's space program ). To quote from the article: Quite the juxtaposition of repressive law and high technology!! Think also of communications technology that forms the basis for Al Jazeera. Ok, now to the meat and potatoes. Iran has fissionable material and has plans to continue with its so-called peaceful nuclear program ( Iran firm on nuke plans ). And, more stuff here: Pakistan's bomb . I stopped short of calling it the “Islamic bomb” because this isn’t an indictment of that religion anymore than I would speak of a Christian or Jewish bomb. However, the question should be, “Would Islamic fundamentalists use the bomb to turn the clock back? Would they see it as their duty to use the bomb even if it meant taking society back to the Stone Age?” Sounds crazy to us ordinary folks, but fundamentalists are not normal. In all fairness, the Israelis have the capability to field nuclear weapons (WMD) thus aggravating the situation. And, they are strictly a theocracy. An enlightened worldview based on science and its findings seems incongruent with regressive (as opposed to progressive) religion. However, high technology (applied science) and fundamentalist Islamic ideas are not incompatible. The wealth concentrated in the hands of the rulers of countries such as Saudi Arabia is the cause of this situation. They are the danger. Does the ends justify the means? And, what the hell is the right thing for us as a country to do?
