  1. i'm thinking it would be plab to put together a cc.com 12month wall calendar. there are some excelent images in the photogallery, and i'd personally love to have a calendar of some of those shots. what do you all think? obviously we'd have to get high res images, and permission from the photograhpers, and i guess we could vote on which images would be included. feedback would be preciated.
  2. just thought of it last night: What kind of beer does a pirate drink? PB ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
  3. when you coming back to bend dude?
  4. plab. thanks to the kind cc'ers who've introduced me to this fun pastime. dwayner!
  5. oh ya, and i'll post some pictures of the current status of the caves sometime this weekend, so every one can see what we are talking about.
  6. count me in for any action. i'd be more than happy to spearhead stuff down here in oregon. and would even make the long trip up to wa for some meetings and such.
  7. an interesting side note, when we we're out there on road 18 last weekend, a family was out driving around and asked me for directions. the dad had grown up in the area and had brought his family back to hike in the caves. instead of exploring, the kids got to see some gates, with a shitload of broken glass and trash outside of it. Nice work Mr. King, he even got an award from his caving cronies for putting in his fixed anchors. To me, this is like the Northwest Forest Pass on crack, where is this going to stop, what is going to prevent the FS from putting in gates on popular FS roads (or closing them permantently). "preserving your Outdoor legacy" i believe it says on the pass
  8. what fascinates me, that in an effort to protect and preserve these pristine caves they have violated their own code: Sec. 7. PROHIBITED ACTS AND CRIMINAL PENALTIES. (a) PROHIBITED ACTS.— (1) Any person who, without prior authorization from the Secretary, knowingly destroys, disturbs, defaces, mars, alters, removes or harms any significant cave or alters the free movement of any animal or plant life into or out of any significant cave located on Federal lands, or enters a significant cave with the intention of committing any act described in this paragraph shall be punished in accordance with subsection (b). http://www.caves.org/ctf/oregon/COCTF/federal.htm

  13. sweet pic!
  14. I think GK has some excellent points here. I also think we have seen this happen in many other scenarios, and have realized that due to the lack of organization/unity among our user group, we are an easy target and most often get the shaft. This is not about bolting, this is about access. It looks like there was an effort here in Central Oregon to form a coalition of sorts, but the lobbying power of Mr. King won in the end I suppose. I think there is plenty of energy around here from the collective group (just look through spray) perhaps if we channeled it the proper way we could do some good.
  15. http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=road+18+cave+climbing great articles opinions from both sides of the fence. some of the editorials are written by old skewl bendites who offer a really interesting perspective on the use of this resource over the last 50 years. to me, this is a knee jerk reaction by the FS, lets face it, for years the tubes were indeed exploited by the agency land mgmt for tourism, now they put a gate on the entrances to many of the tubes? The damage has already been done. Anyone who has visited this part of the Deschutes NF can easily see why its called the Deschutes River Landfill by most around here. Hitch up your portable meth lab, grab the 12 gauge the and the clay targets, and don't forgot yer quad, but leave your headlamp at home cuz dem tubes are off limits. Anybody want to make a betting pool as to how long these gates last?
  16. DWAYNER YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR ELEMENT!
  17. i was shopping around and pricing out the barryvox, thought that MEC might be a good route, but after the exchange it would cost over $300 in real money to buy. i think i saw it somewhere for $248ish
  18. the gates we saw have a odd star shapped lug bolt that is securing entrance ot the tube. i'm sure a tool could be easily aquired to unlock this and get in. besdies that, there are no special padlocks or anything. imho, its just a matter of time until some of said wrekreationists either weld these bolts off or find the right tool to open them up. its reminicent of what they did at Derrik cave by turning it into a fallout shelter with rations for central oregonians, look how long that "gated" cave lasted. its like the FS has bolted the cave up, and someone's gonna come chop away.
  19. glassgow- so the reason for gating was to prevent vandalism then?
  20. lemme guess "1000's of your buddies died face down in the guano for climber's rights in that area, taking shrapnel from rednecks and NPS rangers while being lambasted on the home front." ??? fuck it dude, lets go bowling
  21. YOU ARE OUT OF YOUR ELEMENT BABNIK STFU!
  22. word glassgow! lets face it, one of these tubes was used by the gov't as a test site, they lit a bunch of railroad ties on fire inside to see if they could sense the thermal heat from space.
  23. dudes, watchdog in particular.... said tube we were going to was not one of the bouldering tubes, rather it was an obscure tube that one has to rap down into. all i'm saying is that its too bad that the actions of some (whether they are grid bolters, boulderers, or white trash partiers) that didn't obey the seasonal closures has resulted in the closure of the resource to us all.... AND its effin ironic that they installed a VERY permanent structure to make it happen (read: drilling into the rock, shit loads of metal). i can't stand you jack arses that attempt to turn every thread into a bolting debate, EAD!
