Cashmere Mountain is top choice for U.S. lab By Seattle Times staff LEAVENWORTH, Chelan County — A group of scientists considering sites for a $300 million underground national science laboratory has picked a mountain in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness west of town as its top choice. Another nearby Cascades peak is No. 2, though further study is needed before a final decision is made. The group, led by University of Washington physicist Wick Haxton, is looking at 12 sites in the West for the National Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory. The lab would conduct research in physics, astrophysics, earth science and geomicrobiology, studying particles from the sun, the formation of minerals and hydrology in the earth and microbial life deep underground. Topping the list is Cashmere Mountain nine miles west of Leavenworth, said Kaleen Cottingham, a project consultant and former deputy state lands commissioner. Cannon Mountain, nine miles southwest of town, is the second choice. Both mountains are on U.S. Forest Service land with their summits in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, a 390,000-acre area where motorized vehicles, roads and logging are banned. Well, that's all well and good, but the underlying assets are still stocks and the institutions are not going to give up on stocks and go to cash. They won't fire a manager without hiring another to cover that particular asset class. Certainly Putnam is in trouble if noone wants them to manage money anymore, but it's not the end of the mutual fund industry.

New Program Lets Fliers Help U.S. Troops Get R&R Thursday, October 23, 2003 By January W. Payne WASHINGTON — A program that began Thursday could make the ride home a little smoother for some soldiers. Under "Operation Hero Miles (search)," people will be able to turn their frequent-flier miles over to their airlines, which in turn will make them available to soldiers trying to get home for their brief leaves. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (search), D-Md., said he got the idea after he visited troops passing through Baltimore-Washington International Airport. "Our men and women risking their lives serving our country in Iraq deserve our support," Ruppersberger said Wednesday in a prepared statement. Thousands of soldiers who have been flown to BWI since the Defense Department began granting leaves from Iraq last month have had to dig into their own pockets to buy a plane ticket the rest of the way home. In early October, Spc. Josh Fansler flew on the Army's dime from Iraq to BWI to begin two weeks of leave, but getting home to Colorado became an inconvenient expense. Fansler got lucky — he landed a round-trip ticket to Colorado Springs, Colo., for $223. Not everyone has been so lucky. Girls pummel man who exposed himself Friday, October 31, 2003 Posted: 11:06 AM EST (1606 GMT) PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (Reuters) -- A man described by authorities as a known sexual predator was chased through the streets of South Philadelphia by an angry crowd of Catholic high school girls, who kicked and punched him after he was tackled by neighbors, police said Friday. Rudy Susanto, 25, who had exposed himself to teen-age girls on as many as seven occasions outside St. Maria Goretti School, struck again on Thursday just as students were being dismissed, police said. But this time, a group of girls in school uniforms angrily confronted Susanto with help from some neighbors, police said. When Susanto tried to run, more than 20 girls chased him down the block. Two men from the neighborhood caught him and the girls took their revenge. "The girls came and started kicking him and punching him, so I wasn't going to stop them," neighbor Robert Lemons told The Philadelphia Inquirer. Susanto was later treated for injuries at a local hospital.
