I lived in Ft Collins, CO (pretty close to Laramie). I would probably not opt for that again, having lived here. But there are worse places to be. why not? i've been to FC and i agree that i wouldn't want to live there. i've enjoyed WY more on my visits than i did FC.

have any of you ever lived in WY? i've enjoyed several trips to there but i'm not sure if i'd want to go year round. i've an opportunity to relocate to laramie w/a significant amount of time spent near jackson.

I haven't been bouldering since september! only sportclimbing! I'm dying! thats why bishop is coming up i'd have to lash out at anyone else that called me minxY! go hug a pebble for me! looks like i'm going to be doing less climbing and more skiing next week

chicago when i was 16- non climbing but still amazing-never ever try and drink tequila with a bunch of brazillian boys! 1990- florida and back with my best friend. wish i remembered more of it. there was climbing and drinking and riding and driving. best 8 mos of my life!!!! the roadside bivy in bucksnort tn, climbing in tn and NC in the clear cold winter sun. newyrs and mardis gras both in new orleans... my bday in the bahamas...the FL beaches...august in the valley on the way home...strange places we stopped along the way. CO a couple summers ago. old friends, good climbing in RMNP and the flatirons, no obligations, sunburned left arm. crazy stuck rope way up long's peak. 2 weeks wandering wherever.

Yea, I can. Just as you can disagree. My opinion is that we are a very privlaged society that is growing increasing self-centered and unwilling to help some of society's less fortunate, and fixated on the latest TV shows or Hollywood scandal. Yet it's easy to spit vile about anything, while doing nothing to fix it. You like to climb? Cool, so do I. But I still find time to give something back. You should too. of course you CAN tell anyone to do anything...you're right i just think it's out of line. RobBob is right...you should be inspired to volunteer. Recently something has struck a nerve with me so i'm giving my time now. h/e in a busy world maybe the best volunteering we can do when we have kids at home is to be an active parent. for some people volunteering is as much a hobby as climbing is for me and others who post on the board. i use my free time to spend with my son and climb. now i'm going to give up some of my climbing time to volunteer but it's not b/c i feel obligated to it's b/c it's something that matters to me. back to education...unlike ChrisT my son is not a straight A student but he is doing better in public school than he was in private. because he has some wonderful teachers, he's improving by leaps and bounds. part of that is b/c of the effort and time they put forth to staying in contact with me. one of the teachers who has been the most helpful was one that wasn't even his teacher. talk about caring and going the extra mile! i'm smart enough to know that i'm not a teacher. i tried very hard to help my son but i was doing a poor job of it and creating problems at home b/c of it. i found that when i went to his teachers and asked them how to help him, they had an amazing amount to offer. by involving myself a little more directly with his teacher everything changed. people like to blame education funding, class size, teachers and a lot of people for the educational decline in this country. maybe we should look more at the parents?

i don't think you can tell any of us we should be volunteering. i have recently found an organization with whom i will volunteer some time and i have in the past with a different group. h/e this is related to the time i have in my life. and yes this does include activities other than work. ie. climbing. regarding school and parental involvement. this is a different issue. volunteer in your own home and be there to help your kids w/school work, be involved in their school day, get to know their teachers and in some cases be involved enough to know when you can't help. i'm not a teacher and have no experience in teaching a youngster basic skills. active participation makes a difference. it would help if we were each responsible for our own kid's education instead of blaming teachers and schools for their failures.

my experience with private schools is a little different. i spent $10K a year in tuition and was required to offer up my time to help at the school and do fundraisers. i believe catholic school is a fair bit less expensive but that isn't an option. when i moved to a better school district, i took my son out of private school and put him in public school. he is thriving and doing very well in this setting. his class size is reasonable (19 students) and he has come a long way academically. despite spending all that money on private school he was still struggling and it took an amazing public school teacher to help get him back on track. this is the second year my son has been in public school. i continue to be pleased. perhaps its simply b/c of this school or this district but if they're spending $11K tax dollars/yr on my student it's a better value than the private school. he has more resources available to him and some great teachers guiding him.
