    Peeve thread

Whatever, Dubya is environmental and shit, he uses solar cells on his ranch house in Crawford, Texas.
  3. Is there much snow on the ground in the Ingalls lake basin or can you find a spot on the slabs thats bare? thanks

    Peeve thread

There sure are a lot of unhappy people out there. Maybe if you stopped letting all the little things bug you, you'd be happier. I have no peeves, everything is copasetic. PS - except people talking on cell phones while driving. That is not a peeve, that endangers my life. PSS - and littering PSSS - and smoking in public places; do that shit in your own car or in your own house.
  5. This has probably been addressed here or in another thread but I don't have time to check. How do you get to the Grass Lands camping area? Never been to Smith. Thanks.
  6. The A80 came out about a month after I bought my A70, I suspect they're pretty similar. I went with the A70 because it had good reviews for picture quality, has lots of manual adjustments and it uses AA batteries. The AA's make it bulkier, but I can use them as backups for my GPS, avi beacon and headlamp. My only complaint with the A70 so far is that it doesn't deal well with high contrast scenes like a lone skier/climber on a snowfield. More experimentation with the manual controls would probably help minimize this. I read about this same problem in a review of the A80. My Olympus does the same thing and some shots of mountains often get washed out in the sky, which pisses me off.
  7. These things change so quickly its good to get a new thread going every once in a while. I was fixing to start a thread on the same topic. I currently have an Olympus and have had so many problems and complaints about it I'm not even considering an Olympus for my next digicam. I've narrowed it down to Canon and Nikon because from what I've heard and read, they have the best photo quality and features. Specifically I'm looking at the Canon Powershot A80, Canon Powershot S1 IS, and the Nikon 4300. None of these are great 'climbing cameras' but I'm willing to sacrifice some weight and bulk for better pictures. Does anyone have any huge complaints about any of these 3 cameras specifically. I'm leaning the most to the S1 IS but it is also the heaviest and bulkiest. Any other complaints about that camera? thanks techno geeks.
  8. "Ain't got no shizzle for ya ma nizzle" works too.
  9. Didn't read the other posts so this may have been mentioned, but I believe the Squak glacier is a more direct line than the Easton. Since you won't be camping near the railroad grade area, you can bee-line it straight up the Squak and join the Easton further up. Did this last June (hiking) and it was rather quick.
  10. do you just sit around watching all the threads waiting for the perfect time to insert a "call the whaaaambulance" or ":insert beating dead horse graemlin here:" comment? It may have been funny the first one hundred times you did it, but now it just annoying. Edited to add: include page tops in the above list; f*&king annoying.
  11. Yeah, read my post again. I know that halfs and twins have different requirements. My point was that if you can take a fall on one rope and it holds (half), then obviously you can take a fall on two of the same ropes (twin) and they will hold (increased impact forces ignored). I'm not talking about the gear failing here, just the rope breakage posibilities. It seems to me that you can always use doubles as twins from a strictly rope strength point of view. But yeah it may put twice the impact force on your pro.
  12. How far is Crofton Ridge Trailhead from Cold Springs Campground? Link above says FR 8040 is open to Crofton Ridge Trailhead. thanks.
  13. I've sat around the past two weekends because of "shitty" forecasts. I'll be damn if I'm making it three in a row. Regardless of the forecast this weekend, I will be at a trailhead or crag somewhere in the PNW.
  14. I think it is quite simple: if a rope is rated as half (can hold a fall on one strand), then isn't it also rated as double (can hold a fall on two strand) by default??? Obviously not visa versa though. I think that mammut (or beal or whatever company we are talking about) said that it is rated as a half with the feel and handling of a twin. Meaning it has the advantages of both and because it is rated as a half, it is therefore also rated as a twin and like was stated, can be sold to both markets.
  15. Do you own a pair? They are not that warm. Certainly not a great winter mountaineering boot. I use them all summer long and my feet don’t get hot, but my feet do have a wide temperature comfort range. Besides, they were the only pair of crampon compatible boots I had at the time. I would do things different now but that was my first year of climbing and probably my 4th or 5th time on a glacier ever. I rarely have any problems what so ever with my Nepal Extremes on approaches under 6 or 8 miles (15 miles round trip). PS – my Nepal Extremes weigh 5.75 lbs, my scarpa alphas weigh 5.48 lbs... Yeah, really. PSS - whats up with folks on cc.com being all nice and stuff lately
  16. Any one get up to Adams this past weekend? Did you get up to cold creek?
  17. another photo, this one of Kangaroo Ridge which is the ridge east of the liberty bell group and next south (?) of Silver Star
  18. We were up at WA Pass two weekends ago and were planning to ski Silver Star via the Silver Star creek approach. That is, until we got to the trailhead and there was no snow any where around. As we drove east past Silver Star we noticed very little snow on the north/east aspect of the mountain around the Burgundy Col area so I can’t say we were surprised to see no snow at the SSC trailhead (3500 feet). See attached picture taken from the base of the South Arete of SEWS. I’d venture to say the snow line is above 6000 feet or higher depending on aspect.
  19. OUCH! So they don't teach common sense at Conservative State U? Refer to all the posts about them being super comfortable....
  20. Thats funny, so some people rock climb to get in shape? I get in shape to rock climb!
  21. I've had mine for two years and I do everything in them. I don't really think they are that stiff but maybe I'm just used to it. They are fine for hiking on dry trail too. Climbed Olympus in them 2 years ago (~45 miles round trip) but I probably won't do that again.

    Monitor cleaner

I would not recommend opening this at work as it may or may not contain nudity (actually it does contain nudity but it is damn funny). Need to get me one (or two) of them there monitor cleaners. This made me LOL monitor cleaner
  23. Believe what you want, I don't care. I know nothing about the oil needs of new snowmobiles and couldn’t possibly care less. I can assure you that I am not exaggerating about what I found or heard and experienced. I only mentioned what I myself carried out, two hand fulls of snomo parts and beer cans. I didn’t even mention what the other members of my party carried out (they had their share as well). Bad from on the snomoers part. If you don’t see this stuff laying around, trees scraped to shit, etc maybe its because you’re too busy blazing past skiers at 50 mph. Its amazing what you see when you are hiking or skiing and taking things more slowly... And there are lots of accidents with snowmobilers happening!! How many have been mentioned in this thread alone?? Duh!!! Okay, who is more likely to lug a case of beer up on Baker; hikers/climbers/skiers or snowmobilers? Come on man, don’t be dumb!!! Is this a troll? And I agree with who ever said to just avoid the area, that’s what I do. It only took one awful experience to teach me that lesson. The south side of baker is “out of season” for ~2 more weeks as far as I am concerned.
