  1. You know the phrase "one bad apple spoils the whole batch" or something like that? I don't think that this is the case with bilers. On my way out from the Easton last year, the bilers where blazing all over the place (near to camp too, not just one, but several). I picked up 2 hand fulls of snowmobile parts and beer cans (not likely packed in by climbers/hikers). All this trash most likely came from more than one biler. I think this was a case of more than one bad apple spoiling the whole batch. In this case the whole damn batch was bad. As long as there are many bilers out there that are assholes and environmentally insensitive, climbers/hikers will continue to frown upon them. Its not like these are isolated incidents. Everyone seems to have a story!
  2. What is the world of outdoor clothing coming too? Mountain Kilt Well, I doubt it. Lets hope you're not belaying someone wearing one....
  3. Yeah, I knew what he meant. That was my snappy come back, get it? I had no defense to his slam implying we're gapers (which we are) so I made a joke about the fact that they had to glissade down. I even said when he climbed down to the base "you guys are solo down climbing harder than we're leading...." Its funny like a joke, you know what those are right? No read my joke again, funny no?
  4. Was up doing the South Arete on Saturday afternoon when these two guys climbed down as my buddy was leading off on the first “pitch”. I chatted a bit with them and one of them kept saying “East Butt Slut, East Butt Slut”. I thought to myself, I’ve heard or read that before, I know who this guy is. I said nothing though. If these guys were truly going to snag my gear I would bust em here for sure. So if the Karma wasn’t going to get ya, I would... Good move leaving the gear where it lay. I can assure you the ski down was better than the glissade. Nice wind blow ‘powder’ for the first 500 feet or so, slowly turning into heavy mush down lower. We skied down the Blue Lake side. PS – Yes we stitched up the first 2 “pitches” like a seasoned seamstress but everyone has to start somewhere; thanks for noticing.
  5. (This is not necessarily directed to the poster I quoted, just seemed like a good place to put it:) Honestly, how do you ass clowns get to the mountains, by riding a bike? "Oh no, we carpool in my subie outback." So you are better than the SUV drivers because you only pollute half as much eh? So your shit only stinks half as much? Good job Go get a flipping clue.
  6. someone please save this thread and resurrect it in November.
  7. Why not? Those guys are all fuckin' dumb! Give a man a fancy calculator and some spreadsheets and catalogs and he thinks he's hot shit on a stick ... fehhh. Sounds like someone failed out of engineering school and holds a grudge...
  8. SWEET!! So far it looks like all the cute climbing chicks are open to my advances. When is the next picnic?
  9. Perhaps so, but largely liberal-leaning.... Some things can be fixed and others can be over looked. This falls into one of those two categories.
  10. No, please continue with current topic.
  11. Not a single liberal birkenstock-wearing hippie tried to throw me in the lake last night People tend to be a bit more reserved, and dare I say 'nice', in person. nice to meet those of you that I met. I had no idea there were so many cute climbing chicks that post on this board. wow! If you're not single, speak now or next time I'll be making my move. watch out just kidding sort of
  12. If any of you liberal wankers start protesting "impeach Bush" or any of those other green lake shenanigans tonight some heads are gonna roll. Save that shit for the NE side of the lake on sundays. But to be fair I'll leave the "W in '04, DC in '08" shirt at home...

    poison oak

This is going to sound a little strange, but since you asked for ways to avoid it, I'll tell you what I used to do. When I used to mountain bike (much more than I do now) in college in Austin, I would get poison ivy all summer long. Cortisone shots and bottles of the pink stuff were the norm. It was gross. I hate it, more than any other aliment. I heard about this trick from someone and tried it with much success. Before I went on a ride I'd slather on some Vaseline on exposed body parts (arms and legs). I never once got poison ivy while doing this and still rode the same trails where I commonly got poison ivy before. I think the oils get trapped in the Vaseline and can't get to the skin or something. It is messy and gross and really wouldn't be much of a pleasure on a multi-day climb. It worked great for a 3 hour mountain bike ride though were I could immediately go home and shower. And unlike cuts/scars and broken bones, chicks really don't dig poison ivy PS - a benefit is Vaseline has other uses too...
  15. Thanks for the update Josh. Skiing Ruth is on my tick list for this spring/early summer. Did you see many crevasses? I just started bc skiing this year and have yet to ski on a glacier. I was thinking this would be a good 'safe' glacier to ski in the spring. I was on the Ruth Glacier last september and saw lots of big crevasses which has made me a little nervous about skiing it. Thanks.
  16. Any one find a pair of Birkenstocks (size ~8) in the parking lot behind Barney's Rubble in Icicle Canyon on Saturday, April 10th? Would have been in the afternoon or evening sometime. If so, they are my buddy's. He went back later that night (or the next morning) and they were gone, so someone picked them up sometime that Saturday afternoon/evening. PS - if you found them, and you are now wearing them as your own, I should warn you that my buddy has really stinky feet, athlete's foot, and some nasty-ass warts so you should return them to the owner.
  17. On a side note, is Tieton pronounced like "Titan" or "Teton"? I've heard it pronounced both ways. I've always pronounced it "Teton". thanks.
  18. Maybe I'm having a brain fart, but aren't new bolts 3/8"? 3/4" are some pretty big bolts. Old bolts are 1/4, new are 3/8, at least thats what I always thought. Okay, just re-read slaphappy's post, guess I'm right.
  19. I'd assume your second fastest time is just as official as -'s fastest tie (if not more official...) Refer to this thread for more info on - on Hood, etc
  20. I have/had several holes in the cuffs of my softshell pants (from ski edges ). I patched them with Goretex patches. very simple I've had no problems since I patched them 1+ years ago. I'll add that the goretex patches I used were sticky and didn't require any ironing. Honestly this is the easiest fix so it worth a shot! Those goretex patches rock, especially when you get them from the 50% bin at OR. I have patched lots of crampon holes with them.....
  21. Dyrad- when do you get back? I'd like to pick your brain about some details. It might be time for a long walk for me......
  22. I have to say I agree with JoshK and dberdinka. Bilers definitely do more damage in one trip than a climber can do in a lifetime, especially when they leave their sled *in* the mountain. I've only been on the Easton twice the first time the snowmobilers where anything but considerate (that is a laughable comment in my experience). Riding (no reving/gunning engines) very close to camp, all hours of the evening, etc. The other time it was too late in the season and there were no bilers (what a difference). I suppose its like anything else where one bad apple/experience spoils the whole bunch, but my opinion of snowmobilers went way down after that. We got some satisfaction though on the way out when a snow bridge over a creek broke and the sled went in the drink. So now I just choose to take MattP's advice and not go on the Easton until after the bilers are gone, its not worth it to me.
  23. How did you get down so fast? I can't even ski down that fast and you said you didn't have skis. Were you at a full sprint the whole way or something? Nice work!
  24. Dude, thats freaking awesome, thanks for sharing. good work guys At the risk of sounding too gumby , were there any gaps open on the Ruth glacier? Climbed up the Ruth glacier last september and was surprised by how many large crevasses were on such a small glacier. Always heard it was pretty mellow and I've been wanting to ski it this spring. thanks.
