Supposedly, the thief knot did have a purpose. Sailors used to commonly tie their sea chests shut using a square knot. If a sailor suspected that someone was going through his belongings, he would substitute a thief knot for the square knot. The thief mistakes the thief knot for a square knot. When he refastens the rope he uses an ordinary square knot and is detected thereby.

Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics and Tendonitis
catbirdseat replied to catbirdseat's topic in Fitness and Nutrition Forum
I went to the doc on Friday about a sinus infection. She prescribed Alelox. They cost $7 a pill, but she happened to have a bunch of free samples that she gave me. Got home and noticed that the generic name is moxifloxacin. Turns out it is a fluoroquinolone. Egads! Now I have to decide what to do. Monday, I'll call her and ask if she can switch me to something else. I suppose we can try good old amoxacillin. It didn't work for the last sinus infection I had. Thinker, did you end up on a different antibiotic? If so what was it? I haven't had any hallucinations, but I did sleep rather poorly last night. -
Not much to go on, but it is possible that he didn't anchor himself to the rappel anchor and slipped. I guess we'll find out soon enough. Personal Anchor Thread

Reminds me of the story of an Issaquah family who have had three cars wrecked by out of control drivers in three separate incidents. In only one of them was the car actually on the street. In the other two the driver crossed their lawn to nail the parked car on the driveway. I think the best solution is a good rockery with huge boulders. Let 'em drive into the proverbial immovable object and see how they like that.

I've been trying to put my finger on what it is about Martha that makes so many people claim to hate her. She's rich, but wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She earned what she has. All of it. I think what drives the ill will in people is jealousy. Martha can do what she does because of an incredible amount of energy and drive. People like that are rare. People know that they could do what she has done it they worked hard enough, but very few are willing.

I never said that rockfall wasn't a serious issue. What I meant was that it is manageable.

A well built snow cave can't be beat when there is avalanche danger. Had they been in tents it would have been a very different story. Even had the rescuers not been called, it seems likely that everone would have been able to dig themselves out on their own. That would be weird to be sleeping warm and soundly in your sleeping bag and have an avalanche probe stick you in the gut. "Hey, can't a guy get any shuteye around here?"

I almost went to Frenchman Coulee today, but chose to stay home instead. Riverview is probably where I would have gone. Yikes.

Some people I've spoken with have told me they thought reading about accidents was morbid. They couldn't understand why should anyone want to read something that would make them scared when they climb. I like to tell them that I would prefer to learn from the mistakes of others that I may avoid making them myself. Knowing what can happen will make me think twice when setting up for a rappel. I think everyone could use a dose of reality every now and then.

I know an old fellow who lives in Nighthawk who once worked in the Holden Mine. You saw those pictures of the slusher buckets, right? He said they once had a huge cave-in in one of the main stopes that created such a blast of wind that it blew a slusher bucket almost all the way out of the shaft. Luckily the men were taking a break in one of the side passages and it passed them by.

"Thank you. We're all refreshed and challenged by your unique point of view. " "Thank you for sharing." "Well, aren't we just a ray of f*cking sunshine?" "I can see your point, but I still think you're full of shit." "I see you've set aside this special time to humiliate yourself in public. "

Yeah, that was me. That was attempted murder though, not just a harmless prank.

I've used it on a sailboat. It's only useful for static loads, of course.

There is a crock of shit if I ever heard it. Tests have been done that show more bacteria on the hands after using the blower than when using towels. The reason for this is not that you get the germs from the blower, but that you never got your hands clean at the sink in the first place. Paper towels are able to remove additional germs that the blower could not.

It seems like people have this almost superstitious fear of rockfall at Vantage. It's as though they think that anywhere they stand, a rock can just magically come down and hit them in the head. Perhaps in rare cases that could happen, but it usually is triggered by climbers. What I have found is that if you pay attention to what you are doing and take note of where your climber is and where other climbers are you can belay in a place that is relatively safe. If there are climbers next to a route I am interested in, I usually won't climb it because it is difficult to deal with rockfall potential from two different sources. Now kids are another thing. They are all over the place and they definitely don't have the presence of mind to stay away from dangerous positions. So no, I wouldn't take young children to Sunshine Wall, but I would take them to the Feathers.

I'll bet you used more than a drop. It can't be THAT potent.

You got that right.

There isn't any thing wrong with any of these routes. It's all stories about people who got in over their heads. It's instructive.

If Miles were alive he'd probably think Jazz Remixed was cool. He was always changing, always moving on to the next thing. He remade his own style several times during his lifetime.
-
Call it what you will, but remixed, it ain't jazz. Jazz is all about improvisation which is a very individual and personal thing, in my opinion. The solo is very much the result of the groove that the group creates as a whole. To mix together different recordings is to destroy the context of the solo. You may disagree, but as a musician who has played jazz, that's how I feel about it.

There's a nice steep trail so you don't have to go far on road. Klenke can provide you with a map.

Contrary to my initial expectations, this has turned into a pretty nice thread. Wrlwind, I know exactly what you're talking about. Good observations! All I can say about Vantage is that when you go there for the first time, play it very conservatively until you make the necessary adaptations.
