  1. Clearly, the union members stand to lose from this as the managers are not investing in the funds that give the best return to the investors, but rather the ones with the greatest kickbacks.
  2. If you haven't been up there lately, it is a lot better than it was, thanks to the efforts of people like Wade Holden and Friends of the Trail.

    ??????

It's why they have wash basin faucets that are proximity actuated. Weren't you glad you didn't have to touch a knob?
  4. Dual means two. Duel is something you might do using pistols.

    drink tap water

Too many words? Can't you speed read? Read the thing is 1 min. It basically says that between the local effects on the water sources and the manufacture of plastic bottles in which to contain it, bottled water is environmentally unfriendly, hence Dru's title "drink tap water".

    ??????

I think that if you think about it you'll touch the answer.
  7. It sure sounds like it except that I know Doug Sanders was one of them (maybe there were three of them?). I saw a picture of the rescuers posing with the rescued. The rescuers looked in way worse shape.
  8. There will be an Open House of the FHWA (Federal Highway Admin.) for the development EIS; i.e. widening and Paving the Middle Fork Road (F.S. # 29) for 10 miles. The Open House is being held Thursday, March 4th at the Mount Si Senior Center in North Bend (411 S. Main Street North Bend, WA 98045) from 4 'til 8 PM.
  9. I don't know much about unions, not ever having worked where there was one, but I sure have been enjoying this thread. My college economics professor's take on unions was that there will always be some who gain and others who lose. Those with the most seniority gain through higher wages at the expense of those with the least seniority who lose their jobs first in a downturn. Those who join a union are betting that they will gain enough seniority fast enough that they aren't the ones to go at recession time.
  10. Because. It would cast a blow to our consumer based economic system. People on hallucinogens might forget to go to REI.
  11. My take is that often it would take too much time to place for a running belay, but may be good for a belay anchor or a rescue anchor.
  12. Vertically.
  13. A lot of the desire to climb volcanoes is driven by the newbies themselves. They are the "charismatic megafauna" of mountains. After they've done one they know better.
  14. If the image looks fuzzy it is only because the photo was shot through a cloud of mosquitoes.
  15. You don't know me very well, do you? A dying person deserves comfort in their last days. Why should relief be denied them?
  16. A "Sierra Picket" is one which has the sling girth hitched to the middle hole and is placed vertically with a trench for the sling and the trench backfilled and compacted. It is faster than a deadman to place and holds better in soft snow than a conventional vertical placement. Reference Has anyone tried this sort of anchor?
  17. Air Guitar seems to be easier than Pony Keg once you get past the thin part at the bottom. It also seems very easy to protect. Pony Keg is all face moves whereas you have to jam a bit on Air Guitar.
  18. Someone posted on the Mountaineers site that they called Mr. McGowan and was told that the Royal Columns restrictions would extend until April 15. Now which is correct?
  19. I watched a couple of people climb G&M. They remarked that they thought it was harder than Air Guitar, which I have top roped and found to be easy for a 5.10a. How the ratings compare to Index is irrelevant, because the question was about 5.8 at Vantage.
  20. Sometimes the bad air is hydrogen sulfide, rare in this area. Sometimes it is air that is depleted in oxygen when ore is exposed. It consumes oxygen as it oxidizes. For example, according to the book I mentioned, in the 1970's the Bren Mac company dug 7,000 feet of crosscut and drifts into Vesper Peak from the Sultan Basin side. "We visited this tunnel in about 1986 and 1990 and discovered, among other things, that the mine has reduced oxygen in the tunnel. At that time, the adit was in a state of collapse and very nearly caved. We determined that the tunnel was completely exploratory in nature, because there is no evidence of stoping or any other effort to remove ore other than for assay purposes."

    Time Cube!

I guess it sounds profound if you are on drugs. When you are sober it sounds like gibberish.
  22. It's time to send Crandall back to the Coast Guard, provided he doesn't get near the wheelhouse.
  23. Yeah, either that or just plain poverty stricken.
  24. It can be very dangerous or relatively safe. The book tells what to expect. Some have bad air in them and it will say not to enter under any circumstances. Some have good air, but winzes that you can fall into if you aren't careful. Some are quite safe. The Justice Mine, for example is pretty safe. The Bornite Mine near Green Giant Buttress is pretty safe too, provided you leave the dynamite alone.
  25. Oh, the humanity! I mean apianity, whatever.
