  1. You gotta be kidding! The jobs are from hurricane reconstruction, which is being paid for out of insurance money. The cleaner air in Los Angeles has come as a result of local and State laws which are much more stringent than Federal Standards.
  2. Maybe it's just me, but I find the name of the tanker a bit ironic: Polar Texas.
  3. Saracing, what a horrible, fabricated new verb.
  4. If you want to use real crevasses, you'll probably have to wait until spring. Popular places include the Easton and Coleman Glaciers on Mt. Baker, and the Nisqually Glacier on Rainier. However, anywhere you can find a very steep snow wall will work for hauling Z-Pulleys, such as a ploughed parking lot at a ski area or the lot at Paradise. Prusiking up a rope can be done anywhere you can manage to hang a rope- your garage, Marymoor Rock, you name it.
  5. Nice post, David.
  6. You guys have it all wrong. The terms Liberal and Conservative refer to a person's views on policy. The reason that Bush won and Kerry lost is not because Kerry was too liberal, but because Bush framed his campaign in terms of morals, belief and faith, whereas Kerry spoke in terms of policy only. Americans don't care that much about policy. They really don't give a fuck what the president and congress actually does in terms of policy. What they do care about is his morals. Bush did a better job of convincing people he was morally superior. He did that by keeping a very simple message that was rivetting for the religious masses. Kerry on the other hand spoke about what he would do and everyone's eyes glazed over.
  7. Sure, it sucks that the shrub and the gop senate will get to place at least one supreme. it really sucks. Sure, ow has the right to post whateverthefuck he wants... I'm just saying he should have some fucking class. Rehnquist's illness is very serious, and it is likely that he won't live much longer. I don't care what your political beliefs are... you should have some compassion for the man and his family. I find it hard to have respect or compassion for those who wish to deprive me and my fellow Americans of life, liberty and freedom. This country had two opposing "view points" from the very beginning. Jefferson believed in individual freedom whereas Hamilton had more traditional or "continental" values of order, centralized control and collective safety, at the expense of the individual. I identify much more strongly with Jefferson's ideals. Rehnquist is a Hamiltonian.
  8. Hey klenke!
  9. The remarkable thing about this thread is that there are people expressing opinions on politics that I don't recall having done so before. Some of them are really well expressed.
  10. Folks, that was a remarkably atypical post for Iain.
  11. That is true.
  12. Remember that Napoleon enjoyed great popular support among the French common people. It was only after several wars in which hundreds of thousands of soldiers were killed that they finally exiled him.
  13. I am not familiar with the term "reentrant".

    Exit Polls

"Another stunning victory for the President who will use this mandate from the voters to extend his policies of liberty" The wealthier you are, the more liberty you will have.
  15. Scott, you are a student. Wait until you have to go find a job.

    Bush States

You can't blame people for being gullible. They voted their fears.
  17. No fucking way! It's like a bad dream. This "law" is itself unconstitutional. This is a joke, right? Bush wants to have the powers of a king. Kings used to claim their authority came directly from god.
  18. While I applaud this measure, I also know that throwing a lot of money at a problem involving basic research won't necessarily solve it. The best example is AIDS research. We have little to show for the huge sums of money spent on this. There is still no vaccine 20 years after the discovery of the virus. We do have a large number of very expensive drugs that control, but do not cure the disease. The big discoveries often don't come from targeted expenditures. They sometimes come from related areas of research and from serendipidy.
  19. Anyone what to bet how long it will take Bush to reinstate the military draft? We are going to need more cannon fodder. No strike that- improvised explosive device fodder. My son is 19 years old. This is not good.

    Exit Polls

So... we have the real reason you don't like absentee ballots. The axiom that absentee voters are conservative is less true now than it once was. The first people to embrace it were the shut-ins. Old people who couldn't drive and didn't have a choice. Now people regard it as a convenience thing.

    Exit Polls

It's all meaningless, because the absentee ballots get counted last and they ALWAYS are more conservative than votes cast at the polls. Absentee ballots make exit polls a waste of time.

    The Dead Vote

"I think that absentee voting sucks. It ought to be outlawed. You either get your fat ass to the polls or you don't vote." "The reason I don't like absentee voting is that it makes the election a strung out affair. The people who cast their votes on election day (or mail their absentee ballots on that day) have up to date information with which to make their decision. In this case, I don't think any new information has been revealed, but it does sometimes happen." If you say so... So your definition of "backpedalling" is resorting to reason after starting with a hyperbolic statement. Okay, whatever.
  23. He PROFESSES to be born again. How do you know it isn't just a way to kowtow to the Christian Right? He probably figures it can't hurt.
  24. This article was in today's New York Times. Now I would really like to go visit that place while the lake level is down.
