This is one thing we did right with our kids. We put them in swimming at an early age and they swam competitively through their teens. Neither of them swim anymore, but the discipline and goal setting they learned in swimming they now apply to other activities with which they are involved.

Most kids don't want to do what Mommy and Daddy like to do. Ask him what he'd like to do and then send him off by himself to let him do it.

Sailing is spendy if you are the boat owner. Ownership entitles you to pick the crew and give the orders and put the trophy on the mantle. The crew gets to have fun and not pay for it.
