Get a real shovel and a real probe. How to know what's real? If you wouldn't mine swapping it with your partner for him to probe you and dig you out with, then you have a good one. Also - a probe is not optional, as some people (although less these days it seems) think. It will reduce your search times if used right. Except ski patrollers, and avy techs, and guides, and well, a few other people I can think of... if you call that work. I always used heavy rubber or nylon for real work.

Tee hee, LOL I'm not sure that a constant "beep" would draw enough to make a transceiver heat up like that. Just speculation of course. Either way, it sounds like that beacon is toast. I sure wouldn't trust it again. Perhaps it has other problems that somehow manifested themselves in this incident. Or perhaps it was in handwarmer mode? Time for a Barryvox or a Tracker, eh fern?

Here's my story... Usual everday ski: BD Mira. Then I demo'ed some Rossi MegaBangs. I was out on them and thought to myself, "Wow, the snow really is a lot better than I expected today..." Then I reached down and picked up a handful and went, "Hmmmm, no it's not!" A light went on, and now I am a fat ski convert. I still have and use the Mira's (and some Tua Megas!) but most days I'll grab the Mega Bangsa first. Go demo some skis this winter and see what you think.

I'm guessing 70's, they aren't that far off what I started XC skiing on in the late 70's early 80's. The bindings might date them back a bit earlier though...

I've attended the last two of these, and would highly reccomend them. This year I am going to have to drive 7 hours and sacrifice some time out of another event that I want to attend, but I am likely still going - they are that good.
