$5 says he's a bullshitter. ...and you're especially vague about exactly what it is you really do. I'm calling you out. Hi j_b...or SC...
  3. Stairwells are good. A high %age of hotels have fitness centers. But to me the most fun is to go for a run in a new place. Nearly every city has a safe, nice running area with lots of people doing the same thing. Nothing like getting in a good run and having done a little exploring. If the city is particularly safe, I'll pack a map and try to work my way from point to point, maybe take a bus or subway back. In the past couple of months I've run this way in Brussels, Montreal, Ottawa. I've run on the beach at night south of San Paulo, run in Central Park during the day. Best way to avoid becoming the average business-traveling blob.

well, well...who felt the need to go get another avatar just to answer this thread? My question to you is: Did you put 300 acres of your land into conservation? Or did you meddle with someone else's land ownership? Let's get to the nitty-gritty here. Who on the planet isn't in favor of 'saving the environment?' So if you want to conserve or preserve land, then use your hard-earned or inherited capital, pay market price for that land, and preserve the land. But if you fall into that group of passive-aggressives that have no land or capital themselves, but spend a lot of time telling other private landowners what they can or can't do with their land, you need to take a look in the mirror and realize that you are an intellectually-dishonest punk.
  5. Greg beat me to it, but yes, the Japanese may be historically the most martial culture of all.

blacks would have been rhodesia, whites zimbabwe, I thought.

    Arab Genocide

in zimbabwe I'm assuming you're talking about the recent murdering of white farmers?
  9. has anyone wondered what schoolkids are doing starting football practice in mid-July?
  10. The Arab Islamists are an obvious exception to your theory of evolution. But I also believe that the Japanese, Chinese, Germans are all martial people and that we have likely not seen the last of their warring ways.

hmmmmm...my baits of choice for the day's fishing are 1. compare and contrast the heart of Mormonism and Islam 2. is it fair to put The Wall deep inside Palestinian territory? 3. how is it that Jesus Christ lived, the Catholic Church deified him, and now 2,000 years later we have grown men and women who don't understand the difference between parable and fact? 4. are the two highest and best uses of faith 1) helping children understand right and wrong, and 2) in comforting the sick and despondent?

I found a copy on the shelf of the used bookstore, right next to A Sand County Almanac and other similar titles. Read it over the course of a couple of flights. What a pile of shit. Some guy's fantasy of over-the-top environmentalism, communism, and free love all wrapped up into one. This was an impulse read. My girlfriend in college used to read the books of that genre. In retrospect, I don't know how she and I got along so well, other than the fact that she liked to fuck a lot and so did I. Isn't the enviro movement in large part a club of extremists, each trying to out-do each other in demonstrating commitment to the cause? Does a reasonable, relaxed "conservative" environmentist contingent really exist?
  13. cj001f already partially answered the healthcare claim---he's right that working Americans are paying more than their fair share to subsidize the elderly, uninsured, etc. We do already have a defacto universal healthcare plan (and we have healthcare that costs much more than in nations where people live longer on average than we do). Since even Hillary got de-nutted in trying to solve this issue, I doubt that the combo of Kerry and a personal-injury lawyer are the ones to fix it. People, the most important thing to remember out of all the bullshit and hubris flung around in this thread is that old people in the US receive a lot more than they ever paid in to social programs. Don't ever let an oldster get away with a sermon that he/she is only getting getting back what he paid in, or something less. The AARP is the strongest lobby in the US, and we and our children will be paying the bill in order to finance the system that currently pays out much more to old people than they ever paid in.

maybe that's the one to get then! thanx for the help guys. it's that "middle ground" pain I don't like, that's worse than ass-pain...and I don't wanna be worrying what it's doing to my prostate.
  15. This coming from the worldview of a cube monkey... OW: I'm freely admitting that our incumbents suck. The problem is that Kerry + trial-lawyer fratbot would suck worse. First, they will sell out to big corporate interests just like nearly every other candidate would. Second, go read about John Edwards' funding sources and what he's been up to.
  16. Go ahead and vote for them. Let's watch the final chapter in American production of any competitive hard goods whatsoever. If Edwards has any input, the nation's already out-of-control liability claims and court system in general will be so glutted with cases that the only "safe" businesses left to run will be service businesses, and businesses that function as sales agents and distributors for overseas producers of food and hard goods. Bush is an idiot...and I'm voting for him. It's official as of this morning.
  17. We used to call this "turkeying." What's the latest name for it? Hard on the incisors if you do it too much.

    Bicycle Seats

Just got the road bike I bought on eBay, and I'm as excited as a kid with a new puppy. I haven't owned a fast bike in 20 years. Got this one to try out a short tri this fall, just for fun. Now I face that aspect of cycling that I always hated before...the old torture-in-the-ass bike seat. Any suggestions on a seat upgrade that has padding/no pressure on "the zone ," without weighing a lot more? I've got a Trek mtn bike that has pretty good ergo seat, but I'm guessing it weighs a lb more than the current road bike seat.
  19. ...maybe you can...

    Lighten Up!

You got it, CBS. Actually, when I saw the guy first looking green, I put him at the helm. Best way to divert somebody on the edge of seasickness is to scare the Hell out of him. He did okay, but after about an hour I had to take it back, because he just wasn't keeping a straight course through those seas, and after all it was a race. Then he insisted on going below---a certain death-sentence. It was about 2 minutes after that when all hell broke loose.
  21. bringing you a Climbers Board golden oldie...
  22. No, but it also doesn't mean he's not a windbag propagandist. The thing that really just irritates the piss outa me about Michael Moore is that clearly, in his own mind, he elevates himself and his own abilities up to the level of the people he's trying to ambush. It's like a small-time middle schooler attempting to put down his parents or the principal. Just listen to the title "Roger and me." Well, Roger Smith wasn't GM's best CEO, but on the other hand Michael Moore couldn't manage 3rd shift in a Dairy Queen. Moore has a juvenile's problem with authority figures, thinks he's smarter than everybody else, and he's gotten rich on playing this game only because you schmoes are willing to pay money to see the shit. "Jackass" appeals to the same mindset as Michael Moore, and I like Wee Man, Steve-o, Pontius and company a lot more than Moore, because they don't take themselves seriously.

    July 4th Food

Whatcha eatin' for the 4th? Man I love these summer meals. We're munchin' on homegrown tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, even eggplant. Hmmmm! I think for Sunday it'll have to be either grilled chicken, or fresh shrimp, along with the goodies from our garden. Maybe fresh sweet corn as well.

    Lighten Up!

The guy who was seasick on my boat last weekend was braying like a donkey by the end of it all. We were racing downwind with heavy follwing seas, doing that kind of surf-and-roll that'll send a queasy man to the rail every time. Trouble with those deep pukes, the ones that get right down to the bile, is that they stain. He left a faint orange puke-streak in the gelcoat of my boat's hull.

    Poverty

All I know is that I own some woodland that is a long way from even a creek much less navigable waters, no standing water on it, and I can't do shit with it! Well, I take that back. I can let a timber company come in and log the everlovin' shit out of it, removing all the hardwoods. Then they'll plant pine on it, and it will become a totally different environment. What's the fairness in that? But that's the law.
