Jumpin' jackrabbits! You read all three? Maybe the Doctor's mistake was trying to read them back-to-back, but he got bored after a while. Although DFA got bogged down early on an attempt to read August 1914, too, so maybe the thick Russian lit just isn't for him. What's this Frawnch business all about? Steep limestone or some such? And if you're going the Russian route, don't forget Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. 'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' is a goodie, and not too long. For a denser but eye-opening read, book I of 'The Gulag Archipelago' is good, too. Seems that Stahlin had a thing for killing people off, resulting in a death toll rivaling (exceeding?) the Holocaust. DFA will buy you a beer if you can wade through the next two books, as DFA bogged down somewhere in book II and never recovered.

Hear, hear! for no TV! That shit is ruinous to the grey matter. Books (or periodicals, lately) and music, all the way! The Doctor adds his support to the recommendations for Catch 22 (mind-bogglingly, pants-pissingly hilarious, yet also touching, poignant, and SCATHINGLY critical of war and the military -- brilliant), and most, but not all, of David Sedaris' work (try 'Me Talk Pretty One Day' and 'Naked', which both stand out. With Sedaris, you're almost better off going the books-on-tape route, as he has a distinctive voice which adds a lot to his work, and hearing him sing like Billie Holiday is worth the extra money). Do any of you have any experience with any Charles Bukowski, and if so, do you have any of his stuff that you recommend? (The Doctor Predicts that Dru The Profusely Literate will have some insight here ...)

Bloodshot is a fun route, and a great send. Thing is pretty long; you gots ta hang in there for a while! One of those routes that gets you in good shape for sending other stuff. You'll get Blackened soon, it sounds like. Nothing like a week off to clear your head and get you psyched to come back and tear the fuckin' holds off that project in a blitzkrieg of sending madness. So where's it shutting you down? The razor-sharp crack, or the razor-sharp pockets?

So this is what a Unimog is. DFA had no idea. Fuckers look expensive and fuel consumptive, and yet it also looks like they could probably eliminate the need to actually get out to climb stuff.

From the Climbxmedia main page, click on "The Dose" down at the bottom left corner of the screen, and you'll find the Psicobloc feature. As evidenced therein, Klem Loskot is arguably a bad motherfucker. Bear witness and be amazed.

Fear & Loathing was my favorite book at age 23...I don't know how old you are today. Hunter Thompson's short stories are also entertaining. DFA's list was good, except for that Edward Abbey one...don't read that anarchist shit! Let's see, here. Hippie culture and wanton, substance-abuse-fueled mayhem and destruction are OK. Environmentalist mayhem, bad. Got it. Seriously, though, The Monkeywrench Gang is a great book, even if you disagree with the central premise (i.e. destroy the apparatus that destroys wilderness). You've got a stellar cast of characters, from a Mormon bishop to an alcoholic ex-Green Beret. Much of the dialog and the book's events are hilarious, especially those involving Mormons. There's great scenery, road tripping, gun fights, sex, lots of beer, car chases and escapes, lots of F-words, stolen cop cars, explosions, and vandalism. Hell, the chapter introducing Hayduke is worth the price of the book.

"I read this recently and don't get all the hoopla about Vonnegut. In my opinion, this book was...basic. It's the only book I've read by him." Well, Breakfast of Champions might not make a good first Vonnegut read. Seems like there were a lot of inside joke type of things in there that might not mean much if you hadn't read any of his other work. Dunno, DFA just found himself cracking up at all the ridiculous shit in that one. Try Hocus Pocus or Cat's Cradle. Deadeye Dick was pretty good, especially since it has nothing to do with dicks. "See the * fly the airplane!"

"The River Why and The Brothers K -- David James Duncan" It is inexcusable and inconceivable that the Doctor left these two books off his list, especially since the former is perhaps DFA's all-time favorite book, and is where part of Dr. Flash Amazing's name came from, and the latter is just a damn good book. David James Duncan is .

Holiday Mountain Bike Special!
Dr_Flash_Amazing replied to Dr_Flash_Amazing's topic in The Yard Sale
Well, shit. The Doctor just needs to rustle up some extra capital. Hell, Superman and Batman got found out too, didn't they? And they had a lot more at stake, what with all the flouncing about in tights with their underwear on the outside. At least DFA keeps his underwear under his tights! So you wanna buy the bike, or what? -
'The Monkey Wrench Gang' - Edward Abbey 'Fast Food Nation' - Eric Schlosser (just started it) 'The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay' - Michael Chabon (one of the better books DFA has read) 'East is East' - TC Boyle 'Breakfast of Champions' - Kurt Vonnegut (see also anything else by Kurt Vonnegut) 'The Broom of the System' - David Foster Wallace 'The Infinite Jest' - David Foster Wallace (buy a dictionary if you don't have one) 'A People's History of the United States' - Howard Zinn (haven't finished yet, DFA = slacker) 'Sometimes a Great Notion' - Ken Kesey (slow, but quite good) 'The Tortilla Curtain' - TC Boyle Uh, there's probably more.

Is climbing a way of life or a hobby?
Dr_Flash_Amazing replied to Heinouscling's topic in Climber's Board
Well, despite usually spending all of Spring and Fall at Smith, and another few weeks on the road in between and wallowing in the gym the rest of the time, the Doctor never climbs as much as he wants to. He thinks about climbing constantly, reads climbing magazines and guidebooks, watches climbing videos, checks out climbing shit on the internet, posts on climbing message boards, mimes out sequences to routes in restaurants and such, climbs on most anything available, hangs out with people who climb, talks to those people about climbing, and participates in approximately zero other sports, minus a river here or a hike there. So for Dr. Flash Amazing, climbing would have to qualify as "way of life" rather than "hobby." Now someone hurry up and slag the Doctor for being a sport climber and spending time at the gym. PLEASE. -

Now, we are dealing both with nation-states and independent organizations that want to KILL AMERICANS, ALL americans. Why? Because we are the big boys on the block. They feel that we have invaded the holy land. And they feel like Coca Cola, Levis, and MTV are replacing their culture. So if they feel we're replacing their culture with a bunch of vapid, prefab, plastic American pseudoculture crap that is wholly counter to their values, couldn't we head off this whole issue by not shipping our shit into their countries? God forbid companies like Coke and MTV should make a few million fewer dollars per year. The US is not conduct a first strike into Iraq. How quickly does the public forget: The Barracks bombings in Saudi Arbia, the embassy bombings in Africa, the attack on the USS Cole, and 9/11. We have been under attack for the better part of 3 decades. I think we've wished for peace enough. With the exception of 9/11, we'll probably get a higher Iraqi death toll with one bomb than the rest of those incidents combined. We've already gotten our body count's worth out of Afghanistan to rival the 9/11 death toll. Is this a just way of solving our beef with Iraq? Or anyone else? Bah, this argument has gone around in circles about seventeen times already. God only knows why DFA is diving in for another round.
