  1. not too long ago I was coming back from Vancouver after a long weekend of bachelor partying with about 15 friends and coworkers. The partying involved all the semi-legal activities that are so frowned upon here in the States. On Sunday we checked out of the hotel...a number of the folks had a little wake and bake session before heading out and the whole hallway at the hotel just reeked.....and headed for home. The driver finished up the last bit of Muirhut about a mile from the border and tossed the last bit of darkened damp paper out the window. We stopped at duty free for the obligatory bottles of scotch and continued on to the border. The US Customs agent asked what we were doing up there and the driver flat out said we'd been partying in Vancouver. I thought for sure they were going to pull us in and tear the vehicle apart, but they just waved us on thru. The driver said he finds it best to just tell the truth, esp in his then current state of mind....says it's too difficult to lie. go figure.
  2. gotta watch how you say that, Trask....
  3. wait a minute here.....this sounds very fishy! Is the venue for pub club acutally being 'called' on a Monday? I'm absolutely sick of people railroading things before everyone has a vote. Just last week AlpineK and a slew of other people insisted that it not be called before noon on Tuesday. So based on that info the vast majority of people are most certainly ignoring the spray and bitch fest over pub club until tomorrow. But SURPRISE, it's already been called by Alpine "G-Dubya" K, sneaking in there in his imperialistic, unilateral style that he's so well known for. And the rest of you A-GW-K allies....I'm ashamed of you. Unless we nip this practice in the bud we'll be having pub clubs scheduled a month in advance and that's totally unacceptable, at least that's what I've been told.... I tell ya, you can't turn your back around here for even a second......now go spray like good kiddies and wait until tomorrow. edit: in case you can't tell, I'm really smiling as I spray here....

  16. I love google..... Re: Cockles -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by ESC on September 07, 2001 at 04:34:13: In Reply to: Correction; derivation posted by R. Berg on September 07, 2001 at 02:44:51: : : : : Anybody know where this phrase originated and what it means? : : : : "warms the cockles of my heart" : : : Meaning: Causes a pleasant feeling of a sentimental kind, is comforting, is reassuring. : : : Origin: Not clear. The shell of the cockle, a mussel, is somewhat heart-shaped, but that may not have produced this phrase. : : : Entry from Webster's Second Unabridged, 1934: "Cockles of the heart: A phrase (in which 'cockles' is of uncertain meaning) denoting the depths of the heart; as, to 'delight, rejoice, cheer, warm,' etc., 'the cockles of one's heart.'" : : Maybe cockles is a medical term. : : The heart is composed of various parts that work in unison to pump blood throughout the body. : : One of the parts of the heart is called a ventricle. I dont remember if the ventricle pumps in or sends blood out but it makes no difference in this discussion. : : Anyway, the Latin term for the heart's ventricles is "cochleae cordis". : : Could "cockle" be a corruption of "cochleae cordis"? : Correction: I mistakenly said "mussel" above. I meant to say "mollusk." "Cockle" formerly applied vaguely to various bivalves but is now more specific. : More on derivation: It's unsettled. Oxford Engl. Dict. says "For derivation cf. quot. 1669. Others have sought its origin in L. 'corculum' dim. of 'cor' heart. (Latham conjectured 'the most probable explanation lies (1) in the likeness of a heart to a cockleshell; the base of the former being compared to the hinge of the latter; (2) in the zoological name for the cockle being Cardium, from the Greek [word for] heart'." : This is the "quot. 1669": R. Lower, "Tract. de Corde," . . . Fibrae quidem spirali suo amb tu h licem sive cochleam satis apte referunt. : "Tu h" doesn't look right; individual letters in my OED may have failed to print. TO WARM THE COCKLES OF ONE’S HEART – “…it is astonishing that anatomists of the seventeenth century were already likening the human heart to the shape and valves of the mollusk, common on European shores, and the cockle. That is to say, they saw sufficient resemblance between the two valves of the mollusk and the two ventricles of the heart to refer to the latter as the cockles. Thus, because the heart was long supposed to be the seat of the affections, men spoke of delighting, of rejoicing, of pleasing, and, more recently, of warming the cockles of one’s heart.” From “2107 Curious Word Origins, Sayings & Expressions from White Elephants to a Song and Dance” by Charles Earle Funk (Galahad Book, New York, 1993). On the other hand… “Cockles of the heart have nothing to do with the cockles and mussels Sweet Molly Malone used to sell…the word comes from the Latin phrase ‘cochleae cordis,’ meaning ‘ventricles of the heart,’ while the shellfish ‘cockle’ comes from the Latin ‘conchylium,’ meaning ‘conch shell.’” From “Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins” by William and Mary Morris (HarperCollins, New York, 1977, 1988).

  21. but seriously, we've all seen the recent confusion in the media about lost hikers vs lost climbers. The SAR on Hood is focused on a lost snowshoer!....where does he fit in? my off the cuff proposal last night at Pub Club (albeit after a few brews) is that hikers wear jeans and climbers wear goretex....as a very general distinction....but you get the point. An alternative viewpoint was proposed that serious 'hikers' could very well be wearing high-tech fabrics, esp when they're experienced backcountry travellers, and that the difference between hikers and climbers needed to be diferentiated by the type of gear they carry or use. I personally still like my quick and easy method for determining by clothing as I usually associate 'hikers' with the meddlesome tourons near the trailheads. But in a more specific and pure sense, the alternative viewpoint may have some merit, too. Whatever.............................spray, spray, spray.................
