  3. It recently went thru a major rennovation. I haven't been there since it's reopened. Go check it out for yourself! It's a great walk into it and a chance to touch a piece of Seattle climbing history.
  4. The Washington Alpine Club offers MOFA and WFA classes. http://www.wacweb.org/Classes/Mofa/default.view The webpage appears to need some updating, but I'm sure you could get info on upcomming classes by emailing them. I took the SOLO class thru them and was impressed with the course content and instructors.
  5. I'm always tempted to speed on I-90 eastbbound early Saturday mornings, and usually see a few cops parked between Mercer Island and mile marker 25. Also, coming home I often see radar units at the bottom of a couple of big hills coming back into the metro area where the speed limit drops a bit. Sultan!...unless traffic is backed up and moving at a snail's pace.
  6. I wondered if that wasn't the case...... Here's to making fun of ourselves when the situation calls for it: I do it all too often, as well.
  7. Bronco said: I think he's talking about CO2 build up, not O2. Awesome! Bronco Billy just called himself a dummy....he's the only one who's mentioned CO2 on this thread. Smoke another bowl, dude! There are 2 issues at play here. Normal human respiration (breathing) obviously depletes the O2 content of the air in a 'sealed' snow cave. The CO2 produced is not, in itself, toxic at levels humans could generate before death. Add combustion in the form of stoves or candles to the equation and there's a higher rate of O2 consumption, plus the generation of CO, a toxic byproduct of combustion. That's why it's critical to maintain a 'vent' in your snowcave, esp if you're cooking in it.
  8. Twitchers watch robin served rare Birdwatchers from all over Britain who gathered in Grimsby to catch sight of a rare American robin were horrified to see her eaten by a passing sparrowhawk. They were still setting up their cameras when the predator swooped down from a row of drab factories and warehouses on an industrial estate. The young bird, from the southern US, "didn't really live to enjoy her moment of fame," a twitcher told the Guardian. The robin's vivid red breast made her an obvious candidate for a lunch date. "It was a terrible moment," Graham Appleton, of the British Trust for Ornithology, which had spread news of the bird's arrival, told the newspaper.
  9. yeah, flocks of pigeons and migrating geese really suck. but seriously, being aware of what's above you and understanding the consequences of what you see are very different skills.
  10. it's a nice climb with a long fun approach. all things being equal, I'd probably not choose to take the time to do the approach again...

  12. In general, I agree. However, a rock climber should consider the condition of his or her hands with respect to cuts and scrapes....we often have more open wounds on our hands than the average citizen. A plastic bag, a rain coat, the baggie your sandwich is in, or a laminated map can all act as a barrier if there's a concern...be creative and ask around for what's available.
  13. I'm on a mailing list for this company in Colorado. They often offer vintage and signed mountaineering related books. 14. That seems like child's play compared to an event on a construction site I witnessed. The guy NOBODY liked went in the can. Someone locked the door from the outside with a screwdriver. Several tipped it over and rolled it about 4 times. Someone pulled the screwdriver, tossed it, and ran; the guy came out absolutely COVERED in crap. He got the hint and quit the crew. Another one I only heard about is this. Guy #1 lost his wallet and guy #2 found it. Guy #2 decided to pull a prank on guy #1, and put something that looked like a wallet in the porta-john, mostly burried in the muck. #1 then told #2 that he thought he saw the wallet in the john. #2 went in, spent 10 minutes trying to get it out, and came out with his arms all covered in crap...no wallet. In the mean time, #2 had put the real wallet on the floor under a chair where #1 would find it. MEAN!
  15. I was switched to Rifampin oral antibiotic, which I've finished...no lasting side effects that I can detect. The first dose is typically a double dose, and that gave me some pretty severe intestinal cramps. A nurse at the hospital said that's not uncommon for Rifampin. I'm also still on intraveneous Vancomycin 2x/day for another 10 days. My last check up on Friday indicated continued progress, no severe scaring in my lung, and no significant amounts of fluid in my lung.. I did 11 flights of stairs on Friday...getting stronger every day!

  17. I was at this mine and mill site near Salmon, ID for a few weeks last year. Check out the tailings and the burnt timber.
