    Skin width question

I think this is overanalysis, but I'll just say I didn't say go for super skinny skins. Ones that are as wide as the waist of the ski work just fine. Again, nothing against full-coverage skins, just they are not essential. There is so much technique in skinning. Many experienced skinners can get up unbelievable stuff w/ratty old normal skins. The worst is when you are on a climbing traverse, and you angle in a little too much and instantly shoot backwards on the ski rail. Yikes!

  8. I think you guys are exaggerating the shaped skin advantage. I have used both on the same skis, and to be honest, I slip at roughly the same times. Also, there are times when I have to ski significant downhill with the skins on. Having a bit of ski showing at the shovel and tail makes this less painful, giving much more response to turning. Straight skins stick together cleanly too. That said, I now have edge to edge since BD sent me an additional pair. Be sure if you go edge to edge to leave a decent margin on each side so you can dig in a metal edge on steep traverses.

  12. the problem with neutrinos for me (I have some of their draws) is I try to save them for easy clips on sport routes, so I waste energy fumbling for them to get rid of them at easy clips. If you can't tell by now I'm a headcase.

  14. You might be able to do this by taking an urban First Responder course at a community college or similar, then some companies like WMI offer wilderness transition courses to upgrade. Could be expensive though.
