  1. The theory of evolution focuses on the interaction between life on this planet and the planet itself. It has nothing to do with the original creation of matter in the universe. Scientists, remarkably, are willing to say "I don't know" when there is no evidence to support something yet. Seems to make more sense than making up some fairy tale don't you think?

  8. As far as I can tell, being religious has no bearing on how much you sin, or whether you feel guilty about it or not. I don't see the relationship between evolution and the concept of heaven/hell. One is an explanation for the diversity in species on the planet. The other is a kind of world view...
  9. Scott I think anyone who would show some common sense would see what I'm talking about. Second: this is one of the bigger non-statements I've seen on this site, and that's up against some stiff competition
  10. there are professors at my college who were already in the field before plate tectonics became a solid component of geologic theory.
  11. Ah, the old "no you didn't" argument. My favorite. Particularly followed with a sprinkle of condescension.
  12. ...and as far as the science thing goes, evolution is certainly a theory. It's the best guess a bunch of pretty bright people and their kids have made based on a bunch of observations made of the environment around them. If further observations show that maybe evolution isn't the best explanation for things, then it will fade away as a solid theory. The take-away point here is that it is an adaptable explanation for life, rather than one mired in rigid conformism from a dusty book
  13. Seems to me that's exactly what I'm saying. As far as religion goes I only do what my rice krispies tell me to do.
  14. religions are society's coping mechanisms for the harsh reality that sometimes life sucks. They provide half-baked stories that are supposed to comfort you when life kicks you in the pants for no apparent reason.

    Virused E-mails

they are only secure as the person who uses them, but perhaps the most secure available today is BSD. It has traditionally been used as a server platform, but it is currently the subsystem for Mac OS X client software. It is quite secure, though any applications (such as apache webserver, ftp, nfs, etc, need to be set up intelligently if they are to be used). Obviously, Windows is a very nice target for hackers since it is so commonplace. As new systems become more popular, they too will be targeted, but Windows has been particularly bad. Any system where your web browser or email client can be used as a portal to execute other applications on your hard drive is pretty poor in my opinion. And it has happened repeatedly.

Microsoft should put that money towards writing decent software that doesn't turn your PC into a total menace on the internet. The virus makers are lame but I blame Microsoft for crap technology on this one. Sorry to those folks who work in Redmond on this board (perhaps there are many) but come on.
  21. well it seems like many of the little nerdy things new climbers get riled up about (knot strengths and whatnot) have all been hashed out already on this site, so the spray stuff becomes a little less useful I guess. As for being worried about not being accepted...well I'd have to call someone fairly spineless who is concerned about that on an anonymous (if so desired) internet chat site. But I agree with the club-like nature of the earlier days on this board. Scotty't did remind me a bit of Anthony Michael Hall in the Breakfast Club back in the day hahaha

You (and millions of other windows users) are a victim of the MyDoom worm which is pretty much taking over the internet these days. I wouldn't want to be the SCO webmaster the next few days.
