    Repeat of '92?

I read that the Republican Convention next month will include the Reverend Jerry Falwell who will give the invocation during opening night at the convention. Here's a few choice quotes from the man: "The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country." "If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being." "It appears that America's anti-Biblical feminist movement is at last dying, thank God, and is possibly being replaced by a Christ-centered men's movement which may become the foundation for a desperately needed national spiritual awakening." "The Bible is the inerrant ... word of the living God. It is absolutely infallible, without error in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as well as in areas such as geography, science, history, etc." "I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!" "AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals." "I had a student ask me, "Could the savior you believe in save Osama bin Laden?" Of course, we know the blood of Jesus Christ can save him, and then he must be executed." "There is no separation of church and state. Modern U.S. Supreme Courts have raped the Constitution and raped the Christian faith and raped the churches by misinterpreting what the Founders had in mind in the First Amendment to the Constitution." "The Jews are returning to their land of unbelief. They are spiritually blind and desperately in need of their Messiah and Savior." "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, "You helped this terrorist attacks happen." Whooo.....

    Reagan speaks

"The Bush Administration cannot be trusted." "George W. Bush and his administration have taken normal mendacity to a startling new level far beyond lies of convenience." "They traffic in big lies, indulge in any number of symptomatic small lies, and ultimately, have come to embody dishonesty itself. They are a lie. And people, finally, have started catching on." "When Nobel laureates, a vast majority of the scientific community, and a host of current and former diplomats, intelligence operatives, and military officials line up against you, it becomes increasingly difficult to characterize the opposition as fringe wackos." "Given candidate Bush's remarks, it was hard to imagine him, as president, flipping a stiff middle finger at the world and charging off adventuring in the Middle East." "Even as of this writing, Dick Cheney clings to his mad assertion that Saddam was somehow at the nexus of a worldwide terror network." "What followed was the usual administration strategy of stonewalling, obstruction and obfuscation." "But image is everything in this White House, and that image of George Bush as a noble and infallible warrior in the service of his nation must be fanatically maintained, because behind the image lies*nothing?" "He is ineloquent not because he cannot speak but because he doesn't bother to think." "His Republican party, furthermore, seems a far cry from the current model, with its cringing obeisance to the religious Right and its kill-anything-that-moves attack instincts." --Ron Reagan

    Hippies. Hmph!

Yeah, but what about the illiterate, pro-war, pseudo-patriotic, mullet-wearing yokel?
  8. Uh, my first impression without reading the article is that his campaign might tie that in with home ownership. On the other hand,...here's someone else's words: More disturbing by far are the many eerie parallels between Adolph Hitler and George W. Bush: A conservative, authoritarian style, with public appearances in military uniform (which no previous American president has ever done while in office). Government by secrecy, propaganda and deception. Open assaults on labor unions and workers' rights. Preemptive war and militant nationalism. Contempt for international law and treaties. Suspiciously convenient "terrorist" attacks, to justify a police state and the suspension of liberties. A carefully manufactured image of "The Leader," who's still just a "regular guy" and a "moderate." "Freedom" as the rationale for every action. Fantasy economic growth, based on unprecedented budget deficits and massive military spending. And a cold, pragmatic ideology of fascism—including the violent suppression of dissent and other human rights; the use of torture, assassination and concentration camps; and most important, Benito Mussolini's preferred definition of "fascism" as "corporatism, because it binds together the interests of corporations and the state." By their fruits, you shall know them. source

Hey Scourge, is that Big Lou sans hair? Kinda looks like him.
  10. Correct. Sam Kinnison. May he rest in peace. Or not.
  11. Uh, yeah. I just looked at how the photo was composed. I'm not much of a photographer but I seem to recall that one composes a picture by mentally superimposing a grid on the view, something like a tic tac toe shape. So anyway, I noticed something.

Today’s Seattle Times contained an article describing the use of the Patriot Act in busting a marijuana smuggling operation ( Marijuana smuggling case first local use of Patriot Act provision). I vaguely recall a reference by the Bush administration equating illegal drug use to support of terrorists indirectly through financing of terrorist operations by drug proceeds. Yet this article quotes Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Greenberg who states that there is no indication connecting the defendants to terrorism. All this served to remind me that the so-called ‘War on (some) Drugs’ is misguided. Don’t assume by my moniker that I’m pro-drug. It’s actually a reference to rock climbing. I just believe that there should be more sanity with respect to drug policy. For example, look at how marijuana is categorized under the law as a Schedule I drug. Now, Mark Twain once wrote, "To a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” Right. Shouldn’t we reexamine our drug policy with regard to cannabis? Shouldn’t the federal law be reformed to reflect the actual nature of marijuana and its societal effects in comparison to such legal drugs as alcohol? Shouldn’t federal law be reformed with regard to medicinal marijuana, a potential low cost alternative to high priced prescription medicines if the sufferer is allowed to grow his own? Others claim that the plant is a better alternative to prescription medication but are penalized for their choice ( Ricky Williams failed third drug test). Think also of the money spent. Government is obsessed with the pursuit of illegal marijuana use. It’s like the ‘New Untouchables’. Recently, police stormed a contractor’s house and held him at gunpoint because they thought the man was growing marijuana, which actually turned out to be hibiscus plants ( Officials mistake the popular foliage for pot and storm home of contractor). Maybe we should see the “light”. Hey, it’s not a liberal thing. It’s plain common sense ( The marijuana debate ). Disclaimer: This is just an opinion and is not intended to promote irresponsible behavior or illegal activity.

  20. I actually dislike Bush a great deal myself. It's really too bad that the Democrats have fielded such a poor alternative. Tens reasons to fire George W. Bush and nine reasons why Kerry won't be much better. excerpt: Yet I find myself hoping the guy [Kerry] wins. Not because I'm sure he'll be better than the current executive, but because the incumbent so richly deserves to be punished at the polls. Making me root for a sanctimonious statist blowhard like Kerry isn't the worst thing Bush has done to the country. But it's the offense that I take most personally. Also McCain speaks of the Democratic opposition: "I believe my party has gone astray ... I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have no problems with it, in their views and their philosophy ... You can't fly on an aircraft carrier and declare victory and have the deaths continue ... you can't do that. I do not believe that [sen. Kerry] is necessarily weak on defense." -- Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), on his colleague Sen. John Kerry. "In [his book] Four Trials, John Edwards has written movingly of people who were terribly wronged, and whom he helped seek some measure of justice with great skill, determination and genuine compassion. He shows a perceptive appreciation in those accounts for the strength of his clients' character. And, in the loving portrait of his son Wade, and the deeply touching account of his loss, John reveals the strength of his own character and gives the reader a look beyond a political biography into the heart of a good man." -- Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), on his colleague Sen. John Edwards, in a blurb on Edwards' book Four Trials. "He's got the ambition, the talent and the brains to go very far, to be president of the United States." -Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), on his colleague Sen. John Edwards, in the Charlotte Observer, February 26, 2001.

  23. Here's a party trick. Take any two numbers at random, second bigger than the first (such as 214 and 346) Add them together Add the result to the second largest number Repeat from step 2 for a while (five or six times, maybe) Divide the last result you got by the second-to-last result I'll bet your answer is somewhere close to 1.618. Let's try it: 214 + 346 = 560 346 + 560 = 906 560 + 906 = 1466 906 + 1466 = 2372 1466 + 2372 = 3838 Okay, that's enough, let's see what happens when we divide the last by the second-to-last: 3838 / 2372 = 1.618 Fun with numbers WTF does this have to do with aliens, freemasons and the Denver airport? Not a damn thing.
