  1. Conventional wisdom says that the mini cooper is a deathtrap. Yet... Crash Testing: MINI Cooper vs Ford F150 (http://www.bridger.us/2002/12/16/CrashTestingMINICooperVsFordF150) Both of these vehicles hit the exact same off-set barrier at 40mph.
  2. I'm old enough to remember the Bernard Goetz case (no dogs here). Bernie endures harrassment and attack until one day he gets fed up and strikes back. Kills one of his attackers with a gunshot. The public hails him as a hero though he used vigilante justice (whatcha gonna do when the cops aren't there to protect ya?). Well, it turns out that the power goes to his head and Bernie begins to indiscriminately use his newly found power to administer his own justice. Bad... Just goes to show that a firearm gives the individual the power to preserve and to take life but this power has to be used wisely. Sometimes, the situation does not allow decisions to be made with coolly reasoned thought. Seems the defender had to rely on a snap judgment--"I assess that the charging dog owner is now the bigger threat to my well being." Sad...

  5. Mosul Police Chief Denies Detaining Slain American Nicholas Berg In Baghdad, U.S. officials said Iraqi police arrested Berg in Mosul on March 24 because local authorities believed he may have been involved in "suspicious activities." He would not elaborate but insisted American authorities had not held Berg although the FBI visited him three times before he was released April 6. However, police chief Maj. Gen. Mohammed Khair al-Barhawi told reporters Thursday that his department had never arrested Berg. "The Iraqi police never arrested the slain American," he said. "Take it from me ... that such reports are baseless." Despite the police chief's statement, a U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Berg was detained by Iraqi authorities "for his own protection" because his behavior in Mosul seemed unusual for a westerner. He (Berg)had been seen traveling in taxis and moving about the dangerous city without any escort, the official said. He added that Berg, who was Jewish, had written materials which were "anti-Semitic" in tone, the official said without elaborating.
  6. Presidential push fails to quell GOP fear of Patriot Act --The Hill A group of libertarian-minded Republicans in Congress is blocking President Bush’s effort to strengthen domestic counterterrorism laws and reauthorize the USA Patriot Act, which the president has made one of his top domestic priorities this year. Fifty-eight lawmakers, including six Republicans, have co-sponsored legislation sponsored by Rep. Butch Otter (R-Idaho) in the House that would rein in aspects of the Patriot Act. Both Otter and Craig emphasized in interviews that they don’t oppose the Patriot Act — they just want to eliminate the excesses that could some day be abused by investigators and prosecutors.
  7. Someone mentioned in one of the threads (can't find it now) that he'd be for a Kerry/McCain ticket with the Republican in the VP position to lend dealings with the Iraqi situation an air of respectability and honor. Well, it looks like that matchup won't happen but Kerry has given his support to solicit McCain's expertise as his Defense Secretary if elected ( Kerry says he wants Republican McCain as defence secretary ). So, would you rather have McCain or Rumsfield as Defense Secretary? All I remember is that Rumsfield called for fewer troops to handle the Iraqi situation in difference to some military officials who called for greater numbers of troops.
  8. Video of interview with Lt. Gen. William Odom, a retired general and former member of the National Security Council who is now at the Hudson Institute, a conservative thinktank. He served as director of the National Security Agency under President Reagan. Transcript of interview here, Interesting... (excerpt): AMY GOODMAN: John Kerry has called for an increase of troops in Iraq-you’re calling for the opposite. LT. GEN. WILLIAM ODOM: Well if we want to prevail there in the sense of restoring the insurgency and bringing some sort of order in governing the country, he’s absolutely right. We went in with far too few troops. In World War II in Germany, we had a ration for one U.S. soldier, or one allied soldier for every twenty inhabitants. The ratio in Iraq is about one for a hundred and sixty. So the numbers are very much against you there. The marines went in and started a fire fight which they didn’t have to start in Fallujah which kicked off a conflict there which they were very much outnumbered. The 82nd airborne tried to explain that to them, and they couldn't be told. They had their own ideas how they were going to pacify. The result has been that they are now facing a hard truth. They just had to agree not to go in and put down this group that was causing the trouble. And if you are going to do that, you are going to have to have a lot more troops, and what I'm suggesting is continuing to do that is -- promises little or no positive outcome in the near term. Promises much larger-requirement for much larger commitments later on. Therefore its not in the U.S. interests. But, if you are going to do that Kerry is absolutely right. Strategic Studies Institute, War College The report, by military strategist and War College visiting professor Jeffrey Record, notes that the original purpose of the war on terrorism mushroomed from a search for justice for the thousands of Americans killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks “into something far too ambitious and completely unrealistic.”
  9. How can someone be so foolish as to travel in war-torn Iraq with a passport that shows that he traveled to Israel and then intend to do business in Iraq with no protection? There are questionable details in the story surrounding his capture and execution. No question a headless body was found but something is not quite right here. E.g., this news report says that Berg was traveling alone without documentation (source-- http://www.news24.com/News24/World/Iraq/0,,2-10-1460_1526618,00.html ). Also, he disappeared sometime around April 9 or 10, about the time when the truck convoys were attacked. The voice on the beheading video may have been dubbed onto the video, which was filmed sometime prior to its scheduled release last week. Also, check this story-- Bizarre New Link In Berg Murder--CBS News It's becoming hard to separate fact from fiction, psyops from reality.

  11. That's old news. Everyone has seen that. I'll concede that OUI without seeing an arrest record. However, he specifically stated it was Bush's 3rd OUI, and he lost his license for two years. I'm calling bullshit. Show me. A Bush spokesman said that this is Bush's 3rd arrest. The first arrest was for theft at a motel. The second arrest was disorderly conduct at a football game. The 3rd arrest is the DUI. VP Cheney, however, had two DWIs. The Smoking Gun--Cheney's Youthful Discretions
