Hah! It looks like they're laughing at us! They're thinking: "Ya shoulda followed us at that evolutionary turnoff 24 million years ago!"

You didn't hear? Robots secretly landed on Mars with the goal of terraforming the planet for habitation. The planet spins around its axis about every 25 hours so it's not much a change in length of day for humans. Cheney and his cabal will be the first to depart for the red planet. BTW, bwrts, Mars resides in the CHZ (Constantly Habitable Zone). When the sun expands on its way to supernova, Mars will be the place.

Will Dick Cheney see his shadow?

I don't understand why some people have to oversimply the issue into a dichotomy of natural process vs. anthropogenic causes. Regardless of the finer details of the mechanism, global climate change is predicted to cause widespread human agony and economic cost. Personally, I believe that the rate of change is indicative of anthropogenic influences on a longer term secular trend.

"Freedom's untidy, and free people are free to make mistakes and commit crimes and do bad things. They're also free to live their lives and do wonderful things. And that's what's going to happen here." --quote by Donald Rumsfeld New Orleans: Iraq in America

Being poor is knowing exactly how much everything costs. Being poor is getting angry at your kids for asking for all the crap they see on TV. Being poor is having to keep buying $800 cars because they're what you can afford, and then having the cars break down on you, because there's not an $800 car in America that's worth a damn. Being poor is hoping the toothache goes away. Being poor is knowing your kid goes to friends' houses but never has friends over to yours. Being poor is going to the restroom before you get in the school lunch line so your friends will be ahead of you and won't hear you say "I get free lunch" when you get to the cashier. Being poor is living next to the freeway. Being poor is coming back to the car with your children in the back seat, clutching that box of Raisin Bran you just bought and trying to think of a way to make the kids understand that the box has to last. --more reading for those who don't know what being poor means...

Five dead 'were army workers' At least five people shot dead by police as they walked across a New Orleans bridge yesterday were contractors working for the US Defence department, according to a report by The Associated Press. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal, the new agency said, quoting a defence Department spokesman.

Troops begin combat operations in New Orleans “I never thought that at a National Guardsman I would be shot at by other Americans,” said Spc. Philip Baccus of the 527th Engineer Battalion. “And I never thought I’d have to carry a rifle when on a hurricane relief mission. This is a disgrace.” Spc. Cliff Ferguson of the 527th Engineer Battalion pointed out that he knows there are plenty of decent people in New Orleans, but he said it is hard to stay motivated considering the circumstances. “This is making a lot of us think about not reenlisting.” Ferguson said. “You have to think about whether it is worth risking your neck for someone who will turn around and shoot at you. We didn’t come here to fight a war. We came here to help.” Meanwhile... New Orleans: Police kill army contractors Police shot eight people carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge on Sunday, killing five or six, a deputy chief said. A spokesperson for the army corps of engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal.

Also by Mary Landrieu: "If one person criticizes our sheriffs, or says one more thing, including the President of the United States, he will hear from me - one more word about it after this show airs and I - I might likely have to punch him - literally," says Landrieu. "The President came here yesterday for a photo-op, he got his photo-op but we are never going to get this fixed if he does not send us help now." --source

Uh...isn't it that the Right supports Capitalism but not necessarily democracy?

As I understand it, the Administration and Pentagon spokesmen already condemned Robertson's statements but they said Robertson is a private citizen with a right to his personal beliefs however despicable his beliefs may be. I strongly disagree with Robertson's public statement because it focuses attention on the negative images of American culture (eg. gun slinging, trigger happy) rather than on the positive ones. This is the same guy who jokingly(?) stated that Foggy Bottom (ie. the State Dept) should be nuked. Seems Robertson doesn't have a full grasp of reality.

A team of researchers from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) has successfully demonstrated, for the first time, that it is possible to control the speed of light – both slowing it down and speeding it up – in an optical fiber, using off-the-shelf instrumentation in normal environmental conditions. Their results, to be published in the August 22 issue of Applied Physics Letters, could have implications that range from optical computing to the fiber-optic telecommunications industry. On the screen, a small pulse shifts back and forth – just a little bit. But this seemingly unremarkable phenomenon could have profound technological consequences. It represents the success of Luc Thévenaz and his fellow researchers in the Nanophotonics and Metrology laboratory at EPFL in controlling the speed of light in a simple optical fiber. They were able not only to slow light down by a factor of three from its well – established speed c of 300 million meters per second in a vacuum, but they've also accomplished the considerable feat of speeding it up –making light go faster than the speed of light. --snip-- This is exactly what the EPFL team has demonstrated. Using their Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) method, the group was able to slow a light signal down by a factor of 3.6, creating a sort of temporary "optical memory." They were also able to create extreme conditions in which the light signal travelled faster than 300 million meters a second. And even though this seems to violate all sorts of cherished physical assumptions, Einstein needn't move over – relativity isn't called into question, because only a portion of the signal is affected. -- source -- another source
