what hot chick? where? phnum? email addr?
-
Yes, reachable by road, but that wouldn't have been the shortest path as the crow flies. I wasn't expecting as many brambles. As for my management style, I don't like disciplining. I like being laid back and assuming that folks will get done what I ask of them. I've had to get more hands-on with this TA than I would have preferred.

we hacked up all the good flowz at Alpental today

Didn't Mr. Beckey get lost too?
-
No, I was the boss asking my TA to grade the stuff. My TA wasn't doing the job adequately, so I had to micromanage, something I don't like to do.
-
i don't like doing it, but it has to be done sometime. Wed Dec 7 "I need things graded by Fri Dec 16" Fri Dec 9 - meet to discuss criteria, he tells me he can't start until Mon Dec 12 Mon Dec 12 - i email him all the hws Thu Dec 15 "How's the grading going?" "I haven't started." Fri Dec 16 "Why didn't you grade these students?" "I didn't grade this student because it looks like he accidently turned in the wrong thing." "Did you email him about it?" "No." "How about you email him." "Ok, I'll do it later." "How about you email him now." "Ok." -ten seconds later- "How about you email him RIGHT NOW."

Pope, it doesn't do us any good when you cause any legitimate bolting discussion to degrade into the rock turning into Via Ferrata Disney World. Dwayner was the same way -- his later comments were uninsightful and trite. Pope, if you want to have a serious discussion on bolting, how about commenting on Matt's article http://www.mountaineers.org/nwmj/05/051_Ethics.html

No, but that's the idea. There are some proofs that are so beautiful and elegant that there is just no better way to do it. It's as if there exists this divine book of all proofs and mathematicians discovered some of these proofs. The book is inspired by the late great Paul Erdos.

Actually right now I'm reading a great book called, "Proofs from The Book."

We didn't put snowshoes on until maybe 500 ft below the ridge. No goat sightings.

I was at a conference in New Orleans at the time. It was a Tues night, and my talk wasn't until Thursday. So have fun Tues night, Curfew/no drinking Wed night. One of my buddies bought a bottle of vampiric voodoo hotsauce and told me to try a little. I put just the tip of my finger on the bottle, but he shoved it all the way in. Pretty hot stuff. Anyway, later on that night, I inadvertently rubbed my eye. I immediately ran back to my hotel room to wash it out. I had it decenty washed out when I realized I also needed to pee... In the meantime, my coauthors were concerned about my eye and if I'd be fine by Thursday. They asked my roommate how I was doing, and he was happy to oblige with all the information. The next day, everyone knew about my mishap in the bathroom.

The only thing worse is taking a piss and using the same hand...

I think it's lame getting something autographed, then selling it for money. They're ruining for the rest of us who want something autographed so we can cherish it ourselves.

We missed you. MattP, Dave Schuldt, CBS, and I were at O&T tonight. Speaking of which, who do I owe for my pitcher? I didn't pay anything...

In second grade, I went head over handlebars on my bike, and my only injury was a scab between my upper lip and my nose. The kids teased me that I had a mustache.

Dru, when everything is wet, can you start a fire effectively with matches and a little firestarter? I don't think I can.

I take my big red poofy on pretty much all my winter trips.

Chuck, I had heard that Boving died on Thin Fingers but never heard the details. For me, the bouldery move is maybe three feet off the ground, highstepping and then standing on it. I can't do it, so I do the weenie right-side variation. I suppose that without a hardhat, an unlucky fall, and maybe some weird stuff with the rope, a head could get fatally levered into the rock. Creepy.
-
I think the interesting comparison is Thin Fingers vs Sloe Children. For Thin Fingers, the move is way harder than the rest of the climb, and because it's just a few feet above a flat ledge, the likelihood of injury is low. For Sloe Children, the move is not hard -- just balancy -- and is definitely easier than the several possible cruxes above. Seems to me like the risk of injury could be a little greater, as you're off to the side and your belayer is in the way too. But in either case, the starts are uncharacteristic of the rest of the routes.

That's a neat quote. During the first part of this century, a bunch of mathematicians and philosphers were struggling with concepts of math being inconsistent or incomplete, that there are things that math and science won't be able to do. I can only imagine how Russell felt when he discovered his simple paradox. That same line of thinking later led to some classic results in the theory of computation.

How 'bout the O&T downtown? I'll definitely be needing a beer and/or a hug by tomorrow evening, depending on the severity of the disk failure I had today.
