I understand plenty about people. For example, you're an asshole. And to clarify, I'm not criticizing the quoted person and their neighbors -- I'm criticizing the system the failed them.

The following is a quote from a relative of a deceased miner. "Three hours later he come back and said they wasn't." Ignoring the context of the mining accident, isn't it embarrassing that in a country as rich and modern as ours, we can't get full-blooded Americans to demonstrate elementary-school-level understanding of verbs? I wonder if there's some more evil underpinning, e.g. mining companies know that they need to exploit undereducated impoverished workers, so there's no incentive to promote education, economic growth, etc., in the area.

  5. Right on, they do have PBR (way better than Bud or Miller or Coors).
  6. College Inn sounds good. I'll get there around 8 PM. Be sure to check the back room.
  7. Dru, because it's slow and requires using the mouse.
  8. When you input just a 3-digit code, you're using the extended ASCII characters, which are nonstandard. It's better to use the standard 4-digit UNICODE.
  9. This topic came up a few months ago. The debate got somewhat heated over the legitimacy of ADHD as a medical condition / disability.

  11. would prefer somewhere bus-accessible from UW if I can't fix my bike by tomorrow night mattp/cbs, i owe you a pitcher from last time
  12. There is much less public acceptance to guys wearing tight clothing (e.g. polypro bottoms) or baring skin (e.g. tank tops, shorts). Just this weekend, actually, the grandfatherly host asked me to put something over my polypro (I was wearing briefs beneath) before dinner at the Mounties Baker lodge. I don't know how many nipples or panty lines I could have counted among the women. I responded that everything else I had was wet, and when sitting at the table, I could be naked beneath, and he wouldn't notice if he didn't look. The grandmotherly host stepped in and said my attire was fine.
  13. blah, I can't think of anything remarkably witty to say about the logistic equation.

  15. SOlitude is nice, but I'd be worried that fewer visitors would result in further fees or reduced road maintenance.
  16. I blame the Bush administration. correlation == causation, right?

Do you type in what your item was at the end? If so, then this is a variation of the classic intro CS assignment on trees. The classic assignment though is just yes-and-no questions and assumes an honest, errorless participant.
  18. I'm curious what everyone uses. I think we can all agree on the benefit of having a pair (or more) of climbing gloves, and a separate pair of belay mitts. I think we can also agree that if we can get away with a thinner pair, then that's better (regarding gripping the tools, placing pro, etc.). Some possibilities: mitten shell with liner glove beneath, mitten stays on the tool when you place pro -- possible issues w/ super-cold temps? leather glove, either remove it from the leash or unclip the leash - if it's a cheap glove from the hardware store, the fit might not be great? lightweight Shoeller - sucks when wet? pricy burly Goretex "Alpine"/"Ice Climbing" gloves - seems too beefy/awkward? others? Perhaps it's best to break down based on temps: -2 - +2 C -7 - -2 C -15 - -7 C -25 - -15 C -40 - -25 C I'm curious what yall think.
  19. I think goats, marmots, etc., would be fine. But they have to be spectacular images, not the sort of image where my buddy could have taken the equivalent the previous weekend. The animal needs a candid pose, a spectacular backdrop, etc. Maybe some people will disagree with me, but my opinion is I'd rather see fewer photos, but all of them top-notch, than a bunch of photos ranging from mediocre to exceptional.

  22. Wow, those are some nice photos!
  23. What megapixel are those digitals? Do you actually expect to get quality with a 16x20 print? Even with film, wouldn't medium/large format be necessary to get a juicy 30x40 print? To reinforce some of the others' points, everyone would love it if money would magically appear for their amateur photography in the mountains. I don't see many shots here that are pro-level. Finally, got any pictures of cougars on Si?
  24. Some other ideas: number of years since Into Thin Air economy is sucking so less folks with money to spend on expensive hobbies growth of other "extreme" sports that offer more bang with less suffering, e.g. sport climbing, bouldering
