  1. Utter crap herr doktor! Of course if you can provide documentation supporting your thesis I mioght be convinced. Sorry but the screenplay to th latest Reagan movie doesn't count
  2. "I hate to be a pill, to piss on smoldering embers, no matter how warming, but the facts are these: it was neither Larry Kramer's hysterics, the courageous reporting of the New York Native, Everett Koop's blinding-hot moral flash or anything else that turned the tide of AIDS recognition in America and of AIDS research funding by the American government. It was nothing less or other than Ronald Reagan's sentimental - goddamnit - feelings for a fellow guy he just happened to like a whole hell of a lot from their Hollywood days, a guy called Rock Hudson who came down with the goddamn thing. And if you don't think them's the facts, go look them up. As our story winds down to a close, darlings, in the year 1985, rather than cut AIDS funding by ten million, Ronald Reagan - or more probably Nancy, as Ronnie was already, courtesy of Alzheimer's, more and more lunching out, though not in public - was upped to one hundred million, and, get this right please, a 270 percent increase in AIDS funding. You see, darlings, all that heaven allows written on the wind by tarnished angels is an imitation of life." - dialogue from James McCourt's "Queer Street: Rise and Fall of an American Culture, 1947 - 1985."

  10. All great places to shop. What you propose is simply an inefficient allocation of resources. Luckily consumers in America tend to place their dollar vote with efficient allocation. PP
  11. Haven't they already given you your present by providing cheaper goods? You're a greedy boy.
  12. "There is no clear evidence that the renminbi is substantially undervalued at this juncture....A currency revaluation would not by itself have a major impact on global current account imbalances--particularly given China's small share in world trade." Although the U.S. trade deficit with China will likely be over $100 billion this year, China's overall trade surplus will only be about $30 billion, according to IMF calculations. This means that China is running a trade deficit excluding the U.S. This says a lot about the Chinese trade regime, which is not protectionist. The truth is that China's bilateral surplus has not come at the expense of domestic production, but at the expense of other Asian exporters. It is THEIR production which has shifted to China, not U.S. production. IMF Link PP
  13. I remember when sport climbing and rap bolting was being popularized in the press Ron Kauk was quoted as saying that the rewards for hanging and rap bolting were shallow and not fulfilling. A few years later after projecting and then finally red pointing a .14b in Europe he was quoted as saying he couldn’t imagine a better feeling!
  14. A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to "clean up" the bird's vocabulary. Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior." John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird continued, "May I ask what the turkey did?"

  16. Some of the sandstone pinnacles at Swauk Pass have some incredible loose pebble bands running through them. The area makes for some great day hikning and occasionally fun climbing too.
  17. Pinnacles is also volcanic in origin. It also has some great climbing!

  23. …or the true story of how capitalism helped to create this wonderful holiday. From the memoirs of William Bradford governor of the Plymouth Bay Colony. "One of the traditions the Pilgrims had brought with them from England was a practice known as 'farming in common.' Everything they produced was put into a common pool, and the harvest was rationed among them according to need. "They had thought 'that the taking away of property, and bringing in community into a common wealth, would make them happy and flourishing,' Bradford recounts. "They were wrong. 'For this community (so far as it was) was found to breed much confusion and discontent, and retard much imployment that would have been to their benefite and comforte,' Bradford writes. Young, able-bodied men resented working for others without compensation. Incentives were lacking. "After the Pilgrims had endured near-starvation for three winters, Bradford decided to experiment when it came time to plant in the spring of 1623. He set aside a plot of land for each family, that 'they should set corne every man for his owne particular, and in that regard trust to themselves.' "The results were nothing short of miraculous. Bradford writes: 'This had very good success; for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more corne was planted than other ways would have been by any means the Govr or any other could use, and saved him a great deall of trouble, and gave far better content.'' "...Given appropriate incentives, the Pilgrims produced and enjoyed a bountiful harvest in the fall of 1623 and set aside 'a day of thanksgiving' to thank God for their good fortune." Happy Thanksgiving all! PP
  24. MF is a one move climb and as such is kinda hard to use as a standard. I don't think the Nose is really under rated consider the direct finish to MF. Certainly that is considerably harder than the Nose. I agree with the pope that C & B is not poorly rated but I think that it is a harder lead than Thin Fingers or even Presure Drop at Index. Everyone seems to be discussing differences of a letter grade or two - hardly a sandbag. What about Princely Ambitions? That seems a huge step over Godzilla as a lead. PP
