Why don't ya come to Callahans with us manana? Might help knock out that cold and make ya forget about Ducks loosin'! Can't talk long, got a pheasant in the oven!

Anyone ever climbed out here . Seems like the middle of no where eastern Oregon, but every time I see pictures, it amazes me. I know that a lot of the area is under protection and development, but anyone know if there are areas that may be open to climbing? What kind of rock? Supposed to be enormous (bigger than Smith for sure) [ 10-18-2002, 12:52 PM: Message edited by: ryland moore ]

Ever been to The Zoo in Veracruz? Hotties everywhere!!!!!!!!! Terminal Gravity - you gonna climb some of Barry Balnchard's ice route down there? Or maybe TG=Barry Blanchard?
-
Yeah Stephan, glad to hear you are o.k. and respecting how fortunate you are. I think rappeling scares me more than anything b/c I don't feel like I am in control as much as I do going up. Anyone else feel this way? Were the slings your own or were they already in place? Standard 1 or 2'' webbing? Cordelette?

When I was up there in April, watch an Asian dude flying up Yokum and on to the summit. Anyone know who he was. We encountered him at Base of Queen's Chair. He looked like he was just out for a morning workout! And yes, everything was rimed up.
-
We were down there this past winter and Barry and his girl were guiding two clients from New York. We sat with him on the drive up as he pointed out the lines that he and other partners have done in the early 90s. Pretty long-ass routes. Still some unclimbed ice down there too! 200-400 foot ice from WI4-WI5+ and from 14,000'+ up to 15,500'! Goin' for a FA are ya? Good luck. As for Veracruz, there is actually a beach just to the south with less crowds, better beaches, and nice hotels - We stayed at the Plaza for $80 split three ways! I don't know of any big mountain you can be on the summit that morning freezing your ass off and be at the beach sipping on margarita's by happy hour, riding wave runners, and checking out the local ladies at a discoteque that evening!

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, Dru. So any of you eastern Oregonians know anything about it? I am sure it gets butt-ass cold in the winter, and with the number of farmers out that way, may be a high seep potential from irrigated land above the rim? More eye candy. candy and here and here one more time one more time

Any Tips On Keeping Water From Freezing On Climbs?

I do now, but was not a coffee aficianado until I moved to PNW almost 3 years ago. The only long trip I have done since then was to Mexico and it wasn't a long trip where we were melting water too much. Plus to climb the volcanoes down there only took a few days. I will definately be bringing some strong Joe with me this Spring and will watch out for the runs! -

My climbing partner, Matt Mooney I think is one of the finalists. He is in Moab or something now doing some training? I don't know. The details he gave me were fuzzy and maybe it is a different thing. But he left NYC as a financial day trader and realized that he could live for a full year without working in Bishop for what it would cost him to live in NYC for a month. So he moved to Bishop. He always had the money and would climb in Nepal doing trips like CHo Oyu and Ama Dablam and in between trips he would fly to Thailand to sport climb on the beach to rest up. Wish I had that kind of dough, but he has a lot of climbing experience. Who knows if he'll make it. Where do I find out officially if Matt is on the list? -

Glacial seds actually make me regular in the mountains! Usually on longer climbs (more than a week) I can't shit like I do sittin' at home with a dip in and reading a mag. So, the glacial seds act like my nicotine fix in the mornin to get my bowels a movin' (Too much detail?) -
I am a member of both and agree that AAC has its place. Although I do not think they do nearly as much as AF. I am a member of AAC for the journal and Accidents, but mainly b/c of insurance. I am a Director of a non-profit (So is AAC) and they should not run like a business, b/c they are not one. They rely on grants and supporters like you and I and if they want to remain an organization who lives on their supporters, then they need to treat their supporters just like a business would treat its investors - as a top priority. Yeah, people may buy their books at REI once or twice, but their bread and butter comes from those who will be with them for the long haul. If we do not support them, they do not exist. Sorry if it came off with an atitude, just if I am going to give my money to an organization I believe in, I expect that they continue to uphold my expectations. If they were going to come out late with something that is part of annual membership dues, then they could have at least sent something out in their newsletter about this. My two cents.

This Saturday at the Callahans outside of Roseburg, they will be conducting a trail building/improvement day from 8am - ? with some climbing after. A newly developed area, mainly sport, but it is hard sandstone with a couple hundred mainly sport with some trad, but hundreds more routes possible. The sandstone starts out as face, has roofs and then friction at the top. Pretty cool area, high above the valley. Kinda reminds me of climbing in the Southeast. I know most of you will be at rope-up, but if anyone is interested, can call 541-689-7189 for further details.

Are you sure attitude? I was always under the impression the AAJ and Accidents covered the year before or the Federal fiscal year (ending June 30th) or something like that. I talked with AAC and they said that the members should receive their books by end of Oct. I explained my dissatisfaction for members receiving the books after stores and that id they wanted my money next year, then I don't expect to see the journals and books out on shelves before they are in my mailbox. Non-profits aren't supposed to slack like Rock n' Ice Mag now are they? [ 10-16-2002, 04:42 PM: Message edited by: ryland moore ]

I agree with Dru and Tex, There could be more than 50. Just because you don't know or have heard of them doesn't mean they don't exist. The only way they are getting in the mags iis if they are bragging about this FA done that way etc. For every 5.13 sporto you read about in the mags, there are at least 10 more equal or better than that person who doesn't care about announcing their accomplishments but are climbing for themselves. I am sure this is even more ture with alpine rad trad climbers. Even though there are not too many hard FAs left like the one High and Tex stumbled upon this summer doesn't mean that there aren't hard mo fos from PNW climbing hard FAs elsewhere (Say Yukon or Northern BC?)

not that walking fields on a chilly, foggy morning isn't a pleasure, but the meat on those grain fed birds really ain't that much different from a decent farm raised chicken. I agree with you a little Ted, but there are other birds then just pheasant. Grouse, quail, huns, and Chukar are all awesome and are typically not grain fed, except for wild grasses and the like. Still, something about waking up before sunrise, walking fields of grasses up to your waist that are the color of gold while your dog is frozen on point. The images will never leave me. Enjoy the rest of your hunting season! My is just beginning.

Hey Sisu, there is an ex-Oklahoma football player who hunts wild/ferral pigs with a knife! He kinda cheats by using dogs to distract the pig, and has had some of his dogs killed doing this, but jumps on their backs with a bowie knife. Crazy s um-bitch!

Just got back this morning from my weekend cast n' blast. Saturday, hunted opening day of pheasant with my Dad and brother who flew out from VA and VT. We got 6 pheasant, 10 chuckar and two Cali quail. Almost had an Eastern Oregon grand slam but failed on the Huns after chasing them up three draws. Yesterday, went out fishing in Tillamook Bay, near Garibaldi and caught 4 Fall Chinook of 10, 17, 25, and 33lbs. Time for a little surf and turf tonight!

In Oregon or WA? I do not know if he drew a bull tag. His brother is an elk guide in Colorado and Wy, which is where he lives in the summers working for YNP. Are those Roosevelt Elk up your way or RM elk? I've never shot an elk. Only whitetail in the SE. My Dad was mainly a duck, goose, and dove hunter. I am also a rabid turkey hunter. Love deep fried wild turkey in peanut oil! Damn, I am hungry and just ate lunch! [ 10-10-2002, 02:50 PM: Message edited by: ryland moore ]

No, he is bow, but season doesn't open till later this month I think. I think his unit is somewhere over in the Steens? I will check and see what Unit he drew.

quote: Lower Columbia estuary ducks are the best! They've been eating ocean critters and briny eelgrass, giving them a rich, oily sea-soaked flavor. Smoked duck and Scotch... that'll cure ya' of what ails ya'... Yeah, but sometimes that means they are eating snails and other fishy stuff, that can make the meat taste a little off too. I've had really good ducks and bad ones come from marshy or brackish waters. My favorite are Montana Spring Creek ducks where they have been feeding on watercress in super clean water for a month before heading south!Love duck jerky too, although since moving out here, haven't shot enough ducks to justify it. Still learning areas, and not having access to private land can be difficult. Am trying to get more out on the Willamette this season. Maybe we should swap some game recipes? My great grandfather was a grand national trap shooter who used to hunt with Ty Cobb. They coleected a whole bunch of game recipes between there friends in Va., Ga, and their Maryland decoy carver friends back in the 1930s and early 40s. They also put some good recipes for seafood, shellfish, and crabs. My favorite is corncakes and kidney stew (use deer, or veal for substitue). Nothin' like southern cookin'!

Spent last weekend up on Deschutes. Biked in about 9 miles from the mouth. Steelie fishing was slower than last year. Not sure if the fish moved up after the rain last week or not. We landed a few on my favorite wet fly off the swing. My buddy landed a nice 20lb. Chinook too. This weekend, my Dad and bro are flying in for opening day of pheasant. Will hunt pheasant and chuckar in Heppner, then we are heading to Tillamook to fish for Chinook off my buddy's boat out of Garibaldi on Monday. My roomate went down to Sawyer's Rapids on the Umpqua y'day morning and hooked into 5 Coho. One was a hatchery and two others he landed were wild. My other friend hooked into a nice Chinook that broke him off in the rocks. Fishing is prime! Duck season isn't too far off either! Waiting for my friend to fill his elk tag and we will be eating like Kings all winter long!

I agree with RobBob. Insurance, although it sucks to pay, is needed. I hate going into debt and would not want to be in debt for the rest of my life from an error in the hills, on the road, walking down the street, etc. Plus, annual check-ups, prescriptions, etc. can cost an arm and a leg without it! JayB, check into the health plan at wherever you are going back to school. I got a comprehensive health, dental, and eye insurance from the U of O for $800/year. All visits to the doctor were free if you used the University clinic and if you used a preferred-care provider, the insurance covered 85%. I now have a plan with Pacific Source with a fairly high deductible. [ 10-10-2002, 10:31 AM: Message edited by: ryland moore ]
